According to the Satisfactory Progress and Professional Conduct policy, professionalism is expected from ASU students in all settings, including clinical field experience, PreK-12 school-related and university settings. For Patricia to exhibit professionalism in the university setting, she should engage in clearly and respectfully communicate with all contacts, participate in conversation in an equitable manner, articulate ideas coherently, maintain appropriate confidentiality, and accept responsibility for her actions along with the consequences. According to news reports, three teachers and an assistant principal in this district participated in activities that ranged from physically hurting students, cursing in front of students, and abusing paid leave time. Each of the employees involved was suspended for 30 days. Overall, the actions that the administrator and teachers partook in negatively impacted students and showed little regard for upholding the professionalism of education.
Teachers should be mindful of their actions both in and out of the classroom. In regards to social media, many school districts have guidelines for appropriate usage that should be followed. In addition, teachers should never post confidential material or information that could harm their reputation or their students’ reputation. Teachers must uphold a sense of professionalism and should only provide students access to social media profiles that are directly and solely related to course material. As educators, we should model professionalism at all times, and this includes social media communication.
