Since 1983 public education has been an issue in America. The system has been constantly changing every year with reforms. This constant change has been driven by the American people’s perception that education has declined and something should be done about it. First there was an increased emphasis on basic skills, making school years longer and more graduation requirements. Second, many began focusing on increasing teachers professionalism. Third, they began restructuring many things such as how the schools were organized and how the school day was structured etc. Now today the most of the American people believe that not enough money is given to public schooling. But then again funds on schools are not the same from state to state. This can be explained by the different educational input costs like real estate and teachers salaries. But that’s a whole other story. Funding for schools is not the issue obviously it just needs more of a balancing. The balancing can help out drastically because there will not be a huge gap in the financing of schools. In other words, many Americans will not have to worry about their child attending a school with overcrowded classrooms. Also academic achievement has a lot more to do with someone as an individual. Students with certain backgrounds and family lives tend to have different beliefs and outlooks on life. This should be handled by trying to influence them through programs to teach them that even though we all come from different places we all should have the same goal in mind and that’s to better ourselves. There was a time when school counselors actually counseled students who needed guidance in school and even in life. Counselors now deal with paper work and schedules leaving no time for the student with no positive influence in life. There was a time when America’s education system was top-notch according to the culture and society. With time, a myriad of things has changed, but unfortunately what has not evolved is the American education system. The country is still following a system which was not designed for the current global economic climate. Equality, as positive as it sounds is not as sufficient when it comes to education. The system treats students equally yet expect a similar culmination and outcome. Every child has his individuality and distinct abilities; one cannot judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree. New York City consists of five boroughs, Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. The borough that I reside in is Brooklyn. Brooklyn has approximately 2.592 million people inhabiting this district and approximately 23.4 percent of individuals who reside in Brooklyn, NY come from a low-income household or in other words come from poverty. With catholic and private schools being expensive, people have to rely on the education system to provide their children with a good education. Today, education enables us to enlarge our knowledge and open doors for opportunities to the path of having a good future. In the five readings, each written by a different author, there was a lesson learned and something to take away from each one. Reading through the passages by Mann, Moore, Malcolm X, Gatto, Rose, and Anyon, each author contributed his or her point of view on general public education. What’s the one thing that your parents always tell you? Get an education. We have heard it over and over again. You need a good education to get anywhere in this world. An education is the one thing my parents made sure that my brother and I had. They made sure we were at school on time everyday and ready to learn. My parents want me to have the best education that I can, but going to school in America is anything but the best.
Another form of advantage for public school students is the sources of funding. Public schools are funded by federal, state, and local funds. In contrast, private schools receive their main funding support from tuition paid by the parents of the child. This is an awkward contrast, however, since tuition only pays for a portion of the total expenditures of a child's education. Again, private schools are forced to limit their student's academic ability due to another limiting cause, monetary constraints. Public students would never have to worry about this problem since they receive government funding. It would relieve the parents from worrying about the burden of funding their child's education.
In the 21th century there seem to be a thin line between the wealth and the poor in our schools educational system. We need to help improve our school board with better textbooks, classes, and equipment. How well educated is our students who went to American public schools? How much diversity is in American public schooling? Does the middle to upper class students have an advantage for getting a better education than low income students? In the 1970’s the United States was the world leader in education, since then the quality of education has slowly dropped, leaving the United States ranked number thirty-six in education according to the Program for International Assessment (Coleman). The United States is constantly striving to restore its leadership position in education, yet has been unable to. The “obvious” answer has always been to simply invest more money into education, yet politicians and economists are left scratching their heads, wondering why it isn’t working. Investing more money doesn’t improve the quality of education; active educators and using resources more wisely improve the quality of education.
