Heintze, C., Sonntag, U., Brinck, A., Huppertz, M., Niewöhner, J., Wiesner, J., & Braun, V. (2012). A qualitative study on patients' and physicians' visions for the future management of overweight or obesity. Family Practice, 29(1), 103-109. doi:10.1093/fampra/cmr051 The purpose of this qualitative study conducted by Heintze et al. (2012) was to examine the concepts regarding the management of obesity in the future. Invitation letters were sent to 70 primary care physicians to participate in the study and 15 physicians agreed to participate. Among the overweight and obese patients attended the clinics a total of 123 patients agreed to take part in the study. The patients were provided a questionnaire about their perception of obesity. The physicians were asked regarding the suggestions to increase the effectiveness of the care provided to the obese and overweight patients as well as the type of treatment currently provided. The patients were asked to explain the expectations of their primary care physicians as well as their perception regarding the best methods for weight management. The interviews were then presented for quality content analysis. The findings revealed a considerable level of agreement among both groups about the necessity of communication to achieve the effective outcome. Both the groups emphasized the need for multimodal care as well as recognized that increase in the rate of obesity is causing a strain on the healthcare system. The study had great significance as it identified the need for effective communication between the healthcare providers and the patients as well as the necessity of considering the suggestions provided by the primary care providers in the future alliance between healthcare facilities. Furthermore, in-depth understanding of the views of the physicians and patients regarding issues related to obesity would enable implementation of effective strategies while dealing with the challenges of the obesity epidemic. Obesity is defined as a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduce life expectancy and/or increased health problems. “The problem of obesity is increasing in the United States. Understanding the impact of social inequalities on health has become a public health priority in the new millennium. Social, political, and economic factors now are acknowledged to be "fundamental" causes of disease that affect behavior, beliefs, and biology.” (Goodman, 2003) In the United States today, obesity has become an enormous problem. In the last 3 decades, the number of people overweight has increased dramatically. Obesity has not always been seen as a medical
Demographics and disease trends will influence health care delivery services in the future in many different ways. Not only will the current aging population affect the delivery of health care services because of its rapid growth, but also obesity. Obesity is one of the more serious problems facing our nation today, and will only get worse unless the implementation of programs to educate the public on the many health issues this condition can cause to prevent them from happening. Moreover, not only does the health care delivery system need to adapt in the future to provide quality care for
Obesity remains an extremely serious issue worldwide. Once considered a problem for wealthier counties, overweight and obesity are now dramatically increasing in low and middle income countries (WHO, 2011). In American, the rates of obesity continue to soar. CDC (2009) recognizes obesity as a risk factor for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other health problems. According to NHANES over two-thirds of the US are overweight or obese, and over one-third are obese (CDC, 2009). Treatment for this illness varies; it may include the incorporation of diet, exercise, behavior modification, medication, and surgery. Since there is no single cause of all overweight and obesity, there is no single way to prevent or treat overweight

There are a variety of public issues in the United States society today. Many people are facing some type of illness or disease, one we do not consider a major problem until just recently. Obesity is a disease/condition that many people in America are suffering from. Really obesity can be defined in many different ways; Mayo Clinic defines obesity as a “complex disorder involving an excessive amount of body fat” (Obesity, 2015). When a person is diagnosed having this disease/condition it can cause many health problems such as, diabetes, heart trouble, high and low blood pressure. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of U.S adults are obese. (“Adult Obesity Facts,” 2015).
The problem of obesity has reached the epidemic levels in the US. More than 65% of the American adults are classified obese these days. This is a very huge number. Today Americans are plagued by diseases of which 120000 are because of obesity. An obese person in America is likely to incur $1,429 more in medical expenses annually. Approximately $147 billion is spent in added medical expenses per year within the United States. Although obesity is considered a preventable condition and has been increasing within the United States, no effective treatment has been developed. Health authorities anticipate no change to this vector. Of all the big countries, only
In recent years, obesity rates continue to grow in the United States, not just overweight, socialization difficulties, but it is a society that is developing a new medical condition. However, a worrying number of overweight Americans living with this abnormal condition does nothing to fix their obstacle, satisfies with light diets, and few minutes a day of exercise. ''While the number of obese adults has doubled since the 1980s, extremely obese adults has quadrupled, currently affecting one in every 50 adults, an estimated 300,000 people in the United States die annually from obesity-related diseases'' (O’Donnell, par.4). Unfortunately, years ago obesity were not an overwhelming problem in proportion, as now, each person has to prevent the number of calories to consume a day to be in the healthy average. Across the country, obesity is an epidemic that affects the quality of life, because unbalanced diets cause our body’s improper nutrition and deficient the essential vitamins and minerals our bodies require. Obesity should not be seen as an epidemic, instead as a medical condition that can be solved and controlled through the following years.
The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the determinants of dieting and non-dieting strategies based on the perspectives and experiences of obese patients. The participants were between the age group of 25-70 years, with the BMI above 25. The authors selected randomly 21 participants who met the criteria and conducted a semi-structured face-face and phone interviews to gather detailed individual experiences and perspectives. In the interview, the participants were asked to explain the experiences related to being obese as well as weight loss, the effects of overweight on their life and health status and their concepts regarding food and exercise. Also, data was collected about established diets if any and adoption of non-dieting
Obesity, defined by an individual’s body mass index (BMI) > 30kg/, is a chronic physical illness that has reached epidemic levels in the United States (Brolin 2793). In fact, due to the increasing obesity levels, a new category with a defined BMI has been added—morbid obesity, defined as a weight of 100% over ideal body weight, with a BMI of 40 or more (Brolin). It is estimated that approximately 5% of the US population is morbidly obese, often labeled as the number one US public health problem (Buchwald et al. 1724). When treating a morbidly obese patient, the resolution of existing comorbidities is an equally important
It was merely a decade ago that the obesity epidemic was thought to only be a minor problem and had only alarmed a small number of endocrinologists interested by the size of the situation (James, 2008). However today, the problem of obesity is vast with more awareness of its presence by doctors and individuals alike. In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention states, “More than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of U.S. adults are obese (CDC, 2014)”. These numbers are outrageous and eye opening, leaving millions looking for a solution to this troubling epidemic. Obesity is not simply a cosmetic flaw as some might think, but is actually a very dangerous state of being for any individual to sustain long-term. Mentioned further in
Obesity is another serious factor that is affecting many in the United States. In the past 20 years obesity rates have only continued to increase and are still high. If there is no action taken to try and stop this trend, 10 to 20 years from now the entire nation will be obese and suffering from many health problems. When a person is overweight or considered obese, this means that their weight is not appropriate for that of their height. The main problem with this is that obesity can cause many diseases and health problems. For this reason, obesity is another factor that can influence the health care delivery services in the future. The more obese in the population, the more healthcare will be required to treat the
Obesity has caused great dilemma in America. It was known as an adult disease. “Over two thirds of adults are over weight or obese.”(Obesity, Jerry R Ballenttne) these numbers are increasing rapidly. Obesity is not just a appearance
Obesity and weight gain have become one of the world’s most obvious problem. It is widely spoken of in the news, between friends, families and so on. In a study conducted in America, the results are the following:
In the most developed countries, especially in the United Kingdom, obesity is a growing problem and causes serious morbidity in western countries. The appearance of obesity is affecting the general public. The connection to be overweight or obesity is because of the body absorb calories more than the necessary. Western-style diet, lack of outdoors activities, emotions and genetics are the main reasons leading to people who suffer the obesity. The number of obesity continues to rise as a signal, conduce the public and government concern the strategies to handle this situation. To combat the obesity, government and health organizations focus on advice for diet and activity, medicine management, bariatric surgery and psychological coaching. The effectiveness of these solutions has varying degrees and evaluating the success of them can assist the research in the long term.
According to the obesity society “obesity is one of the most pervasive chronic diseases in need of strategies for medical treatment and prevention”. The obesity society explains that “obesity continues to strain the united states healthcare system” because today obesity is considered a norm in society. It also
