Quinceanera Research Paper

Marked as a celebration of the transition from childhood to womanhood, quinceaneras have been a long-standing tradition among Latin American families. Though “quinceanera” literally means “fifteen year old girl,” the term has become more closely associated with the celebration itself, oftentimes by non-latinx people. Among Latin American families and culture, the celebration is often referred to as “fiesta de quince años” (fifteen year party) or simply a “quinces.” To avoid any confusion, I use “quinceanera” to refer to the celebration, rather than the individual, for the remainder of this paper. Historically, fifteen was seen as the age when Latina girls were ready for marriage, and the quinceanera celebrated that transition. While modern quinceaneras have drifted away from this initial intent, and now reflect more of a celebratory coming of age narrative, the marriage and wedding-related symbolism is still apparent.

Journalists and other nonfiction writers alike occasionally provide accounts of real life traditions and events that occur in various cultures. These important events are often emphasized by underlining them through sequential and descriptive structure, along with direct quotations from the participants of the event. In the news article, “Quinceanera Birthday Bash Preserves Tradition, Marks Passage to Womanhood”, author Natalie St. John uses the aforementioned to highlight and depict the details of a quinceañera and its significance in the Mexican culture and community.

All birthdays are special. Birthdays celebrate life and the passing of time. In a young Mexican girl life, there is no birthday more important then her quinceañera. The quinceañera is a celebration of a girl’s journey into womanhood. The story of my fifteenth birthday is contributed for a better understanding of how special it is to celebrate a girl’s transformation into a lady, and how it differs from any other birthday she celebrates.

Throughout history, most young girls have a Quinceanera which is a special occasion and traditional celebration of a young girl turning fifteen on her birthday and making a transition from child to adult. Reached maturity and eligibility for marriage, which has been custom in most countries. A Quinceanera is something that started many years ago when a Spanish conqueror brought the tradition to Mexico and other countries. Throughout most countries, parents don’t celebrate their daughter’s fifteenth birthday by having a Quinceanera; they celebrated daughter’s birthday differently from other countries. In many hispanic cultures, it is customary to have a big celebration for a young girls fifteenth birthday. This tradition is known as a Quinceanera, Quince, or Fiesta Rosa. This tradition celebrates a young girls coming of age. Moreover, this celebration “[embraces] religious customs, and the virtues of family and social responsibility” (Quinceanera-Boutique). In addition to celebrating the quinceanera, the big event allows family to come together and just enjoy themselves.

It was that time of year that my sister was turning fifteenth and my parents watch how parents stress when it comes to planning. They were thinking of hiring a party planner to be stress free; but I told them to save that money; therefore,

I am nine years old, playing outside on a bright summer day with my cousins, Kassandra and Claudia. We are playing our favorite game, hide and seek. It is six o’clock in the afternoon. Between the years 1999 and 2003, I lived and worked in the west Texas oilfields near Odessa, Texas hauling crude oil from oil locations to manufacturing pipelines. Due to the population density of Mexican-Americans in this area I was afforded the opportunity to befriend a co-worker who hailed from this lineage. This friendship grew to such a state of familiarity that when one of his many cousins was about to turn fifteen he invited me to attend her quinceañera. Although it is not unheard of for a European-American to join in the festivities of this time honored tradition, nonetheless, I was still thrilled to have been invited.

A quinceanera is a tradition of celebrating a hispanic young girl’s coming of the age 15. At the quinceanera i will be wearing a blue ball gown. It will also have a tiara and a prayer book.. There will also be a unicorn Pinata!! The court that i will have will be wearing light pink gowns and black tuxedos. All of the family members from where ever we have them will be attending. In my heritage, when a girl reaches the age of fifteen there family throws a symbolic party for them, this celebration is known as a Quinceañera. It is view as a way in which a girl becomes a woman. This is the story on how I embarrassed myself in front of many people at my quinceañera. First off, many people may or may not know what a quinceañera is. It's a traditional mexican party that a 15 year old girl celebrates, its meaning is it's a transformation from being a young girl to a woman. This all began spring of last year. My family and I began to plan my party. We searched for decoration that corresponded to what color I chose for my party. It ended up being the color pink, although it looked more of a coral. Around two weeks later we began to do decorations, by this time the salon was already rented out and was ready to fill it with items and get everything set up. Quida was the center of trade, had most advanced technology of their time, and a great location. Quida’s symbol was the mountain lion and their colors were blue and black which appeared on their flag in a stripe pattern. On the Iron View peninsula, there was a variety of geographical features that helped the people of Quida. There are two major rivers in the country and a mountain range with vast amounts of minerals. Quida is connected to the mainland by a narrow piece of land on which the people of Quida have built a wall.

It was time. Time for her big day. The day she has been waiting for her whole life. The day that was all for her. The day where she can have fun and hang out with everyone she loves. The day she will never forget.
