Brennan, Joel GOVT 2305-148 9/7/14 Timeline: The Constitution May 14, 1607. Jamestown Settled. This was the very first settlement of the English people in the New World. It was the start of the first permanent colony. December 16, 1689. English Bill of Rights. This shifted some of the political power of Britain from the Crown to the Parliament. This was a good thing because it would later give the Americans an idea about how to create checks and balances in power. On the other hand, it was a bad thing because it made it possible for the Parliament to over-exercise their power later on with the colonies, pushing the colonists to fight for their freedom.
