Reflection On Leadership And Leadership

How can we ensure that effective healthcare leadership is incorporated in today’s organization? While continued reports exist of organizations struggling to stay afloat, research has indicated that healthcare organizations are lacking in effective styles of leaderships. With fast approaching changes with mergers and acquisitions, many healthcare organizations have chosen to restructure their facilities to accommodate the rapid growth in the industries crisis of inadequate leadership in organizations. In fact, numerous reports have surfaced depicting growing needs for organizations to change their current leader’s roles to help improve the potential success of developing effective leadership.

Throughout this course, our textbook readings, the posting to threaded discussions, my responses to a classmate’s post, and reading various classmates’ responses helped further digest, comprehend, and synthesize the leadership content within Daft’s “The Leadership Experience” textbook. Our weekly lectures with various classmates’ interpretations and responses during the open discussion forums about the textbook themes brought a variety of unique viewpoints to the specific leadership topics. This reflection paper was an extension of this learning, and provided a deep introspection about leadership concepts; how did I, how am I, and how can I apply this knowledge in my workplace. This writing exercise uncovered new meaning and insights while both challenging and supporting certain personal views and ideas about leadership.

Since change is a primary necessity in a contemporary healthcare environment, healthcare leaders must be able to shift from operational task completion to leadership skills of visioning, motivating and inspiring others to attain desired outcome (Merrill, 2011). The question that then arises is, who is a good leader? A good leader is an individual who shows an excellent example to those around him/her. He or she is at the forefront of affairs, taking risks and attempting to achieve shares goals and inspiring others to act ((Marquis & Huston, 2015). There are different types of leadership styles including authoritative, democratic, and laissez-faire.

The term leadership can be applied to varying positions within healthcare, from management to the clinical setting. However, while those in a management position may wear the title of “leader”, this type of leadership can be far removed from that of a clinical leader. I believe that the above quote by Stanley (2011) is true from the perspective that not all styles of leadership are instrumental in the changing or challenging of people’s vision of the future. The Situational leadership theories states that “a leader emerges to fit the situation” (Kreitner and Cassidy, 2011, p.399). In other words, different people will take the lead in various situations that will subsequently require different skills. Al-Sawai (2013) argues that the ever changing elements present within healthcare would benefit from leaders encouraging their subordinate leaders to develop and adopt diverse leadership styles to suite different conditions. This leadership style may be suitable for adoption by unsuccessful leaders because it allows them to adjust their leadership style to deal with more fluid circumstances.

“It is unequivocally clear that leaders are not like other people” (Kirkpatrick and Locke, 1991, as cited in Northouse, P. G., 2016, p.22). I have always thought that I was not like other people; I see the world through a different lens. Leadership is defined as the process of visualising to a better future; whereby one motivates and enticing others to think and plan ahead as to facilitate the change (Jones, 2007). However, according to Bishop (2009), healthcare professionals have a poor leadership skills due to lack of strong leaders, who mainly emphasise more on traditional models of management. Therefore, they require leaders who have a good communication and decision-making skills to be able to handle stress and time management efficiently (Tomey, 2009). Thus, the fundamental concepts of leadership are important, as to help leaders to look at the different surroundings of situations and to be able to adjust their leadership style accordingly (Tomey, 2009).

The book, “Leadership in Healthcare Essential Values and Skills,” in chapter 3 focuses on how to become effective leaders by reading popular leadership literature. This chapter also implies that popular leadership literature covers those books that are read passionately by practitioners of leadership. Essentially, the main focus of this passage was to get all readers to become more sensible with the material they read and study. I think it is important to be aware of the academic literature content you are reading because the motivation to focus can become insignificant. I believe that the academic literature mainly provides a vast amount of analysis on leadership. In this case, leadership skills can be developed and evaluated through the required leadership that organizations seek, which would ultimately lead to their success in their field. For example, the three CEOs shares their feelings on their leadership styles and investments in leadership development. These feelings extend towards analyzing the qualities, such as confidence, good judgment, and emotional intelligence. The qualities stated are examined in order to show how they support effective leadership for their respective organization. Leadership is defined as having the ability to allow others to follow willingly. In the clinical and organization decision-making process, the nursing leadership role can be described as challenging including life changing decisions for patients and team members in an interdisciplinary care setting. Furthermore, leaders should have a vision of what success should be like and how to accomplish the task at hand. Leaders should be able to communicate, perform, create and innovate to allow the vision or dream for the organization to come into existing. To be an effective leader, I feel I must be willing to commit to lifelong learning and building skills. Equally important, among the use of various evaluation tools, I have come to understand my leadership style and personality traits which will help me to become a more effective leader in my organization.

The environment of health care has made an amazing progress in identifying the future values and factors which are necessary for making certain changes to attain noticeable and significant advancements crosswise a several services. The styles of Leadership and Management must effectively use to carry out clear changes and for attaining particular actions. This makes an important real improvement in the healthcare and social environment. It is a very complex process to make efficient and effective completion of advancement and change as a dynamic area which takes mentioned time to make action for particular management and leadership programs, there are unique to all organizations usually. Every firm requires some changes and improvements programs to become successful in different sectors.

As an educational leader, I have encountered several new and existing school policies. I never thought deeply about the various processes and the stakeholders involved in policy formulation and implementation. This semester I am engaged in the course Managing Educational Policy as School Leaders (EDLM 6005). This is Semester III, 2016/2017. My course coordinator is Dr. Timar Stephenson. Dr Stephenson was my course coordinator once before and was very helpful whenever I needed clarification or when I had a difficulty. I am thrilled to embrace the new ideas and learning opportunities embedded in this course since it teaches issues which I experience at work. Dr Stephenson, during his introduction reminded his entire class that success in this course would only be realized through hard work, dedication, and commitment. Therefore, it is imperative that I have the right attitude as I navigate this course. The course involves seven weeks of intense work. I am pleased to have a wonderful group facilitator by the name of Rhonda Joseph who has already given us a BBC to explain the requirements of the course and our first two modules.

Due to my passive nature, I’ve always avoided leadership roles. With that being said I still aspire to be someone who can be looked to as a leader. In order to reach that goal I observe and try to mimic the actions of people that inspire me. There have been many people I’ve taken orders from, but I have “followed” few. Those are the ones I consider to be true leaders, and have tried to be like myself.
