Service Learning Experience Report Emily Mathieson 5507124 CHYS 2P15 Discussion Group 8 Wednesday, April 15th, 2015 This final report aims to summarize my service learning experiences and what I have learned throughout this service learning opportunity. Beginning with an overview of my service learning setting, and many of my experiences, then moving onto analyzing two of my critical learning incidents and finally concluding with what lessons I have learned. Service Learning Setting As I am enrolled in the Concurrent Education program my placement was in an elementary classroom setting. It was a grade three/four split classroom, with 24 children; this school is rather small compared to others so there are a lot of split classes. Values such as respect, courage and honesty are very important to the school, and showing pride in your school is of high importance. While most of my placement was spent within my specific classroom assisting as a helping hand to the teacher, there were many assemblies and group work periods that allowed me to interact with many other teachers and students. In the Beginning After spending approximately 54 hours with a classroom, there is an abundance of experiences I could elaborate on that taught me something. Starting at the beginning, I was anxious about this placement. I knew I loved children, but I felt an incredible amount of pressure to ensure that being a teacher is exactly what I want to do, as my program is so direct in that career path.
A Service Learning project is one of the project requirements to complete the Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree through Ferris State University (FSU). My Service Learning experience was completed at the VA Medical Center (VAMC) in November, 2014. This paper includes details of the facility along with the contact information for the coordinator of the project. A description of my role as a volunteer, critical reflection of my experience, and a synthesis of the Service Learning are also included.
The critical difference of service learning and the traditional learning style is that students are learning and addressing real needs in the community. Which connect students to the community through meaningful interactions with others, safety, and educational needs. This specific course includes readings, discussions, and activities to support
The benefit of service learning for the student and community is again a better inform civic minded individual who may use his experience from service learning as a launching pad for career opportunities to better serve within that community. In an article published in the College Student Journal its author noted that with service learning “students gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility" (Strange,
I found Kathleen Cahill’s presentation on service learning to be very interesting. I have always been aware of how important it is to do service for your community. In high school, I had to complete 100 hours of service over the four-year span. This increased my awareness of the importance of service, and showed me a variety of organizations the exist in Erie, PA. However, I was never aware of the high level of poverty that exists in Erie until I saw Kathleen Cahill’s presentation. I was shocked to learn that the number of those living in poverty in the City of Erie, is around 30%. This statistic made me realize even more the importance of service, especially in the Erie community.
After some research and deliberation, I chose Habitat for Humanity (HFH, 2016) for my service project. There were several reasons that Habitat for Humanity appealed to me. The first reason is that I consider HFH to be a worthy cause is that I appreciate that it’s for a lower income family that would not otherwise be able to afford a home. The facts that the beneficiaries are expected to help build their home or other HFH homes with sweat equity, they’ll pay a mortgage, combined with the way it’s set up so they won’t be able to just sell as a short term flip, gives me the impression that it’s not a freebie entitlement program, but a program that promotes responsibility with some life changing results.
My role in my service learning position is at Tri-City Church (also Community Bible Church... as there is currently a merge going on) of Vista, CA. My position is primarily to care for the needs of children while the mothers are able to take a break to meditate on the sermon. This care includes feeding children, playing with them, soothing them, taking care of their toileting needs, and helping sign in and out the children to their parents or family members. While I am already fairly comfortable with this routine (as I have been doing it for some time now) there is still the occasionally apprehensive moment. Occasionally I have trouble connecting with the parent's if their new to the area. Earning parents' trust can be a difficult thing to do.
During the spring semester of 2015, I took the Service-Learning course in psychology (Psych 410). The general structure of this course included attending a 70 minutes long class on Mondays and Wednesdays to learn about service learning from the psychology field perspectives, reading scientific articles, conducting literature reviews to broaden my understanding of the subject, and in class constructive discussions with my colleagues. The course required 50 hours of community service at any local organizations or schools. From February 24 to May 8, I volunteered at the Arc of southern Maryland, an organization that provides residential services for individuals with intellectual disability. This organization has several homes in the Leonardtown area. Each home has four to five residents that are grouped based on the developmental disability conditions. As part of the class, I was required to write eight reflection papers about my volunteer site visits that were minimum of one page. Additionally, the class required me to develop a hypothetical program that would be beneficial for the individuals that I worked with.
“Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities” (Learn and Serve America National Service-Learning Clearinghouse). This assignment gave students the opportunity to go outside of their comfort zone, which is typically the classroom and see what the “real world” is like. As Gandhi would say “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” (Gandhi). I believe that this project really allowed us to appreciate what we have because many people are not as fortunate. During this service learning project I had certain expectations going into the project, but in the end, my results were not exactly as I expected.
I had a little trouble getting assigned an individual to work with for service learning, but after communicating with the coordinator of service learning, I was able to be paired with someone. I have sat and talked a lot with the resident I am working with. We have talked about personal life experiences and her everyday life. As the resident began to open up to me she had mentioned that just prior to moving into The Hope House in January, she had gotten out of a marriage. She stated “I was unhappy the whole time I was in this marriage.” She didn’t go into much more detail. I began to be curious as to why she was so unhappy in the marriage and I felt sad for her. We continued talking and she said “I didn’t know it at the time, but I was really depressed while I was in that marriage.” The resident explained to me that she didn’t know she was actually in a depressive state until she had been coming out of it, here at The Hope
In this paper, I discuss the experience I have gained from my service learning, along
According to Kathleen Flecky and Lynn Gitlow, service-learning is defined as, “learning that occurs in experiences, reflection, and civic engagement” (Flecky & Gitlow, 2011). In recent years more universities are implementing service learning into their curriculum. A key concept of service learning is civic responsibility. Civic responsibility can simply be defined as your responsibilities as a citizen. As will be shown later in this paper, service learning can have many benefits not only to a student, but also to the community members
On October 20, 2015, I went to the Wood County Park District to do tree inventory as my service learning field trip. During the service-learning trip, I was sent to a certain spot in the park to count and identify the different kinds of trees in the forest. I was handed a tree identification key and with my group we had to figure out if the trees were under the coniferous tree key or the deciduous tree key. In my group, I helped identify the types of leaves, bark, and the place where it was growing.
Many schools nowadays require students to volunteer a certain number of hours before they graduate. MCPS(Montgomery County Public Schools) superintendents are considering adding an extra 15 hours of SSL(Student Service Learning) to their graduation requirement.
For my service learning aspect of this course, I volunteered at Lawrence Catholic Academy. There I worked one-on-one with a fourth grade boy who was struggling in all of his subjects. His grades were not very high and he needed a lot of extra help. One reason as to why he wasn’t doing well in school was because he rarely ever did his homework and therefore he always fell behind in class. Another thing that I had found out just a couple of weeks ago is that he was very sick last year and he had to miss half a year of school. Since he wasn’t in school for half of the year, he didn’t learn the material that he needs to know and therefore he is even further behind compared to the rest of his peers. I would always try my best to help him understand
The term ‘‘service-learning’’ means a method (A) under which students or participants learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that (i) is conducted in and meets the needs of a community; (ii) is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program, and with the community; and (iii) helps foster civic responsibility; and (B) that (i) is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, or the educational components of the community service program in which the
