Reflection Essay 1 In class, so far, we have discussed many different topics about leadership. One being different leadership theories. The one that I feel most represents the leader I want to be in the future is servant leadership. My view on leadership before coming into college was very brief. I knew what leadership was in a vague way, not in the descriptive way that I have learned about in this perspectives on leadership class. At first, I thought a leader was someone you just looked up to for a specific reason. During this class I have learned that leadership is so much more than that. A leader is someone who you can look up to but in a way that you know you can fully trust them with anything, and the things they say are accurate and they hold them self to a high standard. A leader does not just have one quality they have a bunch of qualities and traits that connect them as a leader.

The group was informative and had us start off the first half of the morning with leadership and communication games and activities, so we could get accustomed to each other. These were great ice breaker activities and got our blood pumping. All the games we participated in, we got into each others personal bubble and had quite a bit of laughs.

Over the course of this semester we have taken many tests that measured our skills, abilities and performance as a leader. These have included the Heresy-Blanchard Leadership Style Questionnaire, Communication styles test, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. However, birth order and where you are raised can define you as a leader as well. All of these aspects combined show us our leadership style, strengths and areas we can improve upon to become even stronger leaders.

Leadership theory, or the scientific approach to understanding leadership, is a vast group of theories that try to explain what makes, or constitutes a great leader. There are many schools of thought on this subject and many pull from existing psychological theories, like Behavioral Theory, Developmental Theory, Personality Theory and Learning theory (Myers, 2014). There are three main leadership theories: trait theory, which suggests that some are born with certain traits that make them an effective leader, while behavioral theory focuses on how leader behave, while contingency theory addresses how the situation influences leadership.
