Similar to point of view, Pyle uses a mixture of low and high diction to further his point. Throughout the essay Pyle places emphasis on the mass destruction created by war, whose magnitude is almost beyond comprehension. In the piece he refers to the bodies lying on the beach as “expended, sufficient men” , once again showing good men were used up by the war (2). Also, Pyle specifies that the “mechanism” used were “for a small war” (2). By the choice of these specific words, Pyle exhibits that humans nor machinery were designed for such a great, vast, and deadly war. As the story progresses he begins to write with more elevated diction, including military terms such as “LTCs” and “caterpillar treads”, by the usage of specific military terms
