Romeo and Juliet: Fate or Free Will?
The play Romeo and Juliet was one of the most famous love tragedies ever written. This love story unfortunately had a fatal ending. Many people argue over why the lovers had died, was it over Free Will or Fate?
The death of Romeo and Juliet was partially because of free will. The fact that Romeo and Juliet got married knowing that there was a bitter feud between their families, the Montague and Capulet’s. This feud brought on many problems, such as the murder of Tybalt by Romeo. Juliet knew that this might be a problem for Her and Romeo. Juliet had said: “What’s in a name”? Which explains her ill fate of being a Capulet and Romeo being a Montague. When Romeo tells his servant “ Ay, mine own

I believe they had died over the love they had for each other, strong enough that their lives could end so suddenly if something horrible had come between them, and that was exactly how it happened. This tragedy occurred within five days of the two meeting, they experienced love at first sight, got married and quickly were dead.
Free Will became a part of this when Juliet decided to take Friar Laurence’s advise in inhaling a potion that will make people assume she is died but will awake in 42 hours prier to when she took it. When Romeo had heard the news that Juliet was dead, he assumed it was true, and responded with the line; “Well Juliet, I will lay with thee tonight”. To me this line indicated how he feels for Juliet by dying in her will.
The fact that Free Will didn’t take control of the story; it left Fate to be the murder of the lovers. Fate first kicked in when their eyes met at the Capulet party. When Romeo and Juliet spoke, their words had powerful contentment; they had such a strong feeling for one another that they could lay in each other’s arms forever. Their happiness didn’t last long; there were many reasons for this, for example; the marriage Lord Capulet arranged between Paris and Juliet. I believe that the plot of the play thus far leads the audience to believe that the deaths were a result of fate. The last act will determine once and for all if it is Fate or Free Will. Romeo again challenges Fate by
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet died and this is because of fate. Why? Because of all
In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, fate appears to be a dominating force from the very beginning. In the prologue, the Chorus introduces the idea that fate controls Romeo and Juliet’s love, when we are told that Romeo and Juliet are “star-crossed” and “death-marked.” When the author, William shakespeare begins the play by revealing that Romeo and Juliet are ‘destined’ to die, he reveals the climax of Romeo and Juliet before the play even begins. The author’s decision to reveal such a large part of the play and spoiling the end for the audience does serve a purpose. The introduction reveals the presence of fate by declaring Romeo and Juliet must die because that is what Shakespeare imagined from the beginning, which declares fate as the ultimate
To summarize the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo meets Juliet at the Capulet’s party, decides to marry her, and goes to Friar Laurence for help. Shortly after their marriage, Romeo gets in a fight and kills Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, resulting in Romeo’s exile. After Tybalt’s death, Juliet’s parents arrange her marriage with Count Paris. Juliet initially refuse but after going to the friar for help and creating a plan to fake her death, she agrees to get married. Her decision makes her father very happy and he changes the wedding date, ruining Juliet’s plan. To improvise, Juliet takes the poison a day earlier than she had planned. Taking the poison early eliminates the time needed to inform Romeo of the plan. This means that when Romeo hears of Juliet’s death, he believes she is actually dead and decides to kill himself at her tomb. Shortly after Romeo’s suicide, Juliet wakes up. The play ends with Juliet killing herself with a dagger after seeing Romeo’s corpse and the two families discovering their remains. Whether the outcome of Shakespeare’s play was a result of fate or free will is much debated but, imagine the ending of the play if Romeo, Juliet or Friar Laurence made a different decision and it is likely the result would not be a tragedy. This is why even though fate brought the protagonists together, the outcome of the play was a result of free will.
I believe Romeo and Juliet are responsible for their own death. First of all, when the Capulet’s were hosting a party, Romeo decided to invite himself without an invitation. This caused Romeo to be remembered by Tybalt, a member of the Capulet family. If Romeo didn’t go, he never would have met Juliet, and therefore never would have fallen in love. In my opinion, their relationship was deceitful from the beginning. Also, I believe that they took their relationship too fast. Over the course of a day, Romeo and Juliet met at the Capulet’s party, fell in love, and got married.
The characters themselves believe that there lives are controlled by fate and luck it was Romeo blames his misfortune down to the stars he was portrayed as a believer in fate rather than free will he had a feeling from the very beginning of the play that he and Juliet would never really end up together and that fate would get I the
Some believe that fate controls your life and what happens in it, others think that your decisions affect the outcome of your life. In the Shakespearian play “Romeo and Juliet”, two star crossed lovers from feuding families fall in love. Due to the actions they both take to pursue their love, they both end up dead along with other people. The deaths of Romeo and Juliet were not caused by fate but their own poor decisions.
Fate has brutal ways of twisting one's destiny and it surely did for both Romeo and Juliet. William Shakespeare wrote what is now known as the romantic tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The play is highly recognized for it’s astonishingly composed writing. Another thing this play provides is the numerous debates that have come up from this very tragedy. One of the common arguments is between whether this tragedy was controlled by fate or by free will? For sure we can determine that the undoing of the two star-crossed lovers was in the hands of fate itself this is because of how critical is was for them to be born into rival families, their meeting was destined not chosen, and finally how they are always being battered by obstacles when they try
First, the outcome of the play “Romeo and Juliet” was due to free will because of choices made by Friar Laurence. The first decision he made was shortly after Romeo meets Juliet, Romeo asks the friar to wed them and he answers with, “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be,” (2.3.94) In hopes of ending the feud between Montagues and Capulets, the friar chose to help marry Romeo, a decision that would result in the deaths of the main characters. If he had refused to help, Romeo would not have married to Juliet, slain Tybalt, or killed himself as Juliet would not have had to fake her death. The second decision made by the friar was after the climax of the play, where Juliet asks for his help when her parents demanded she marry Paris and he responds
In Romeo and Juliet there is a big difference between Fate and Free will & Choice. Fate is the development of events beyond a person's control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power. Free will & Choice is The ability to choose, think, and act voluntarily (cite from Dictionary.com). Fate and Free will & Choice have a distinctive between them, however they both have indistinguishable context about them in the play Romeo and Juliet.
In the play Romeo and Juliet it shows how fate instigated the lovers’ deaths. According to the stars their deaths were destined to happen because everyone believed that the stars told someone’s fate. Romeo and Juliet both didn’t plan on meeting or falling in love, Romeo loved someone who he couldn’t have and Juliet wasn’t ready to marry. Plus, their families had deep hostility for each other. Lastly, their death was destiny and unavoidable because of the several
Although Romeo killing himself was freewill, in “Romeo & Juliet” I agree that Romeo and Juliet are victims of fate due to their families hate for one another, Romeo's banishment, and Juliets timing to wake up,
The Friar encouraged them to trust their love. Romeo went through all the trouble to marry the girl of his dreams, and then he committed a crime. Romeo killed Tybalt and the Prince of Verona banished him from the city. Come to find out, Romeo and Juliet weren’t even married. Determined to get married, Juliet takes medicine from the Friar to make her look like she’s dead. Someone runs to Romeo and plays a prank on him saying that Juliet really is dead. Romeo takes poison and kills himself. When Juliet wakes up, she finds out he’s dead and stabs herself in the heart with a dagger. Could this be free will or
Romeo and Juliet had chosen their fate, by loving each other, and wanting to be with each other. Fate brought them things that were good, and things that were bad - Ending their life at the end of their story. Fate played the biggest role in the story. The 2 families suffered some deaths of their children because they wanted to love, and the parents couldn’t get along with the other family. It was also Romeo and Juliet that brought them their deaths partially because they didn’t express themselves too each other’s family and parents.
from family rival gang violence leading to innocent death, from Romeo's unforgettable decisions when being controlled by love and Juliet embracing Romeo to be married to her as her true love after three days of knowing each other. All these pieces of the play are just an example that an unknown force guides this play to life and death throughout the journey of a pair of lovers. The only thing is the force is not unknown, it's called fate. This is the same fate that had pushed Juliet and Paris close to marriage. However Juliet, lead by fate, claimed she would rather die than marry paris without any true reason other than the fact the loves Romeo who she barely knows .
Fate is the cause of Romeo and Juliet’s death. No-one is to blame for their deaths because everything happens for a reason. Fate brought the two together, even though their families had been rivals for the longest time. Fate had taken over when the plague spread when the messenger was supposed to deliver the letter to Romeo. Fate also made the two fell in love, they didn’t let the opinions of their families affect them and what they had felt. It was truly destined for them to be together even if it meant dying along each other’s
