Ron Sims – Guest speaker Ron Sims was the guest speaker this week from the Oklahoma County Crisis Intervention Center. From what I learned the facility is fairly new and is located in downtown Oklahoma City. The center treats adults only and has a 16 bed locked co-ed unit which will serve as inpatient treatment, as well as an emergency unit which can keep their patients for up to 24 hours. The Crisis Center helps people in mental illness crises and drug/substance abuse. There are a couple different types of detox that they use for their patients who are coming off of drugs. They usually use a step-down method, in which a nurse would slowly taper the patient off of the abused substance, as well as situational detox. This type is mainly for …show more content…
These situations can be a drug overdose, suicide attempt, mental break down, and so on. In 2011 I was an involuntary patient at the Oklahoma County Crisis Intervention Center. I stayed a little over a week after a failed suicide attempt. I was the only woman in the unit who was a suicide attempt, and there was only one other man. There were probably 20+ other people who were detoxing from different drugs and substances. I had no knowledge of drug abuse so coming in still drunk and drugged up from the attempt was quite scary, especially because I was the youngest patient they had in the adult unit. The other male suicide attempt was about my age and the only other person that I could relate to at that time, and he would eventually become my boyfriend just a few weeks after we both were discharged. I also got to talk to a lot of other addicts. There was a PCP user, quite a few opioid abusers, and a couple of heroin addicts. I learned a lot about these drugs which I was clueless about before, and it helped me understand what these people were thinking. Being a former patient of the facility will definitely help me in my career field to understand those who are going through crises. I now know a lot more about drug and alcohol abuse as well as different mental
Unlike OST, detoxification generally aims for opioid abstinence. Detoxification tends to be less successful than OST (Kleber, 2007). However, persons will seek this treatment for many reasons, such as a means to reduce costs associated with having an OUD. Some also choose to detox prior to entering a treatment program or before starting OST. Despite the fact that this approach is less effective, persons who undergo a complete detoxification relapse slower than those who dropout of detoxification. However, there are drugs that can be prescribed in order to prevent or delay relapse, as well as prevent withdrawal symptoms Examples of drugs that some patients will taper include methadone, buprenorphine, or clonidine (Kleber,
The Detox Process - The addict is treated to a regimen of vitamins, nutritional supplements and organic foods that will help the physical body start replenishing an unhealthy blood supple and brain functioning due to poisons with healthier body function. The detox process might be further enhanced by the use of exercise programs, whirlpools and saunas to help draw the poisons out.
Before providing any drugs to patients, test are ran by a doctor to determine the addiction and what type of drugs will help their condition. Methadone clinics use methadone and buprenorphine to help manage addicts cravings. Levacetylmethadol is used for patients who do not respond to methadone and buprenorphine treatment. In addition to the chemical treatments that address addiction, clinics provide life skill classes, job skill training, individual counseling, group counseling, and medical care is also provided, which can help an addict see a future and want to stop

If a physician feels the risk are minimal, they might simply monitored the patient and supply them with prescribed medications to help deal with pain or sleeping issues. For deep-rooted addictions, a medically monitored detox process is often necessary. This kind of a opioid detox process places the patient under the watchful eye of a professional medical staff on a constant basis. If the withdrawal symptoms become too overwhelming, tapering medications might be used to allow the body to withdrawal is a slower and safer manner.
One of the initial processes of treatment includes that of medical detoxification. Detoxification, is defined at the period of time a client is withdrawing from AOD (141). This detox is necessary in regards to drugs, such as CNS depressants, because of their dangerous withdrawal symptoms (21). Careful medical supervision in regards to withdrawals as well as medications that may be used in treating symptoms related to these effects. This process
Detox is a scary word for a lot of people. With an onsite detox program you'll receive support from medical professionals. This makes the process more tolerable.
It should be noted we don't offer an in-house detox program. However, we can offer a referral to a reputable detox facility in the local community. Following detox and the overcoming of opioid withdrawal symptoms, the focus shifts to counseling (family included) and goal setting. The first phase of treatment focuses on therapy. Once the proximate cause of the addiction is isolated, we shift towards phase II of treatment. Here, we work with our patents to provide them with coping skills they will need to avoid using opioids in the future.
When a person becomes an addict or even dependent for a prolonged period of time, treatment is necessary. Though there are a variety of different ways that each person can be treated. Usually a person who is dependent is gradually taken off the opiates, by a process known as dose reduction. Subsequently a dependent person may also have some type of therapy to help alleviate the pain at the same time as the dose reduction. On the other hand for an addict, things are different because they must stop using the opiates all together. Today there are many medications such as methadone, suboxone, or subutex that doctors use to help ease the symptoms of withdrawal. Similarly the process of dose reduction is used in this case as well. Most addicts must also enter a program like in-patient or intensive out-patient rehab, where they must learn to cope with problems
The Tom Green County Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU) was formed in 1999 as an adjunct of the Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Stewart Dickson hired Rita Guthrie as the coordinator and she has remained in that position since that time. Ms. Guthrie has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Counseling. Before heading the CIU, she was an advocate for victims at several local agencies including the New Direction Batterers Intervention and Prevention Program and the San Angelo Family Shelter. Her passion for victims of violence and others in crisis led to her selection as the CIU coordinator.

For those who suffer from substance abuse, there are often groups and programs created to help maintain sobriety, learn life lessons, relapse avoidance, and NA/AA groups, geared to work with both the mental illness as well as the addiction. In these clinics and facilities, there are often medication evaluations and consultations available, to monitor and help maintain medication adherence, and broaden understanding of the particular medications taken by patients. This
In psychology, crisis intervention models are designed to help mental health professionals in dealing with a variety of situations. This is because the conditions surrounding patients, their friends or family have become severe enough that some kind of intercession is necessary. In the case of drug abuse, these tools are utilized to address the underlying problems and introduce possible solutions. To fully understand the best approach requires comparing crisis intervention techniques. This will be accomplished by: examining two different crisis intervention models and psychological first aid strategies. Together, these elements will highlight the most effective tactics for reaching out to individuals who are suffering from substance abuse.
When detox is handled in a professional treatment facility the process is conducted under the supervision and care of rehabilitation professionals. Depending on the substance the person is dependent on their withdrawal symptoms
Detox is only the first step in getting treated for an addiction. Afterward, patients can start the rehab process. During this stage, patients receive counseling for trauma and underlying problems that fuel their addiction. They receive medical and nutritional support as their body recovers.
