1. During my time at Santa Ana College I have been working as a student worker for the Safety and Security Department for over 1 year now. My duties as a security besides citing vehicles that do not have valid parking pass is to assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors with any questions. I am looking forward to continuing to work for them again during my last semester. In addition, I am a part time security at the OC Fair and Event Center. My duties as a security at the OC Fair is to maintain a safe environment for guest that attend the events. 2. College has been my priority. I want to continue my education by attending Cal State East Bay to obtain my Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and my Master’s Degree in Public Administration. My career goal after I obtain both of my degrees is to work for the city of Santa Ana where I can serve my city where I grew up. Throughout my two years at Santa Ana College, I faced difficult family circumstances that conflicted with my studies, but challenged me to continue with my education regardless of the hardships. I remember some day during the first week of instructions on my first semester at Santa Ana College I broke down in tears in front of my family in my backyard because I was …show more content…
Santa Ana College has lots of resources to offer students. Throughout my education at SAC, I have taken advantage of various education programs such as: Learning Center, EOPS, and Library for additional help to be successful in my classes. At the Learning Center, I would go mostly every single day spending hour after hour with the tutor, Calvin, to get feedback on my English papers because I wanted to get the highest grade on them. EOPS helped me enormously with expenses such as textbooks and transportation costs, and priority registration for my classes, and I took advantage of the English tutor, Aileen. Lastly, the library was convenient because I was able to utilize the computers and books for my research papers and study
I am the product of divorced parents, who struggled with substance abuse, but that does not define me. My childhood consisted of poverty-stricken environments; however, I refused to let that dictate the outcome of my life. At the age of ten, I had to assume the role of a fatherly figure to my three siblings, so I missed out on the conventional childhood most would have had. I grew up in east Bakersfield where substance abuse, gangs and criminal acts of violence were a pervasive occurrence, and I resiliently avoided the peer pressures to conform to their way of life. From the ages of 11 to 15, I would work for my grandfather at the local swap meet on the weekends so that I could help my mother make ends meet. I received my worker 's permit at the age of 15, which elevated my ability to help my mother financially as now I earned a set wage. I worked the maximum hours allowed as a minor while balancing my academics and extracurricular school activities at school. Although faced with much adversity early on in life, I managed to be a scholar triathlete in high school and was accepted to California State University, Bakersfield after graduating from Foothill High. I was determined and excited to be the first college graduate in my family, as I understood the economic importance of this achievement. Sadly, after my freshman year of attending the university, I had to put my educational endeavors on hold to assist my mother and siblings further financially.
In August of 2012, at Grand Rapids Community College, I was placed on Academic Probation due to my cumulative GPA dropping below the 2.0 threshold. Prior to this action, I was not driven to take the action to perform well in my classes. I was lost in the options for my future and unaware of where I would end up. It was this lack of focus and drive that reflected in my performance. This was a strong turning point in my life, and after being placed on academic probation I came to appreciate the repercussions I was facing by not prioritizing my education. It was in this year that I decided on where I wanted my college career to take me. Through the influential factors I discussed in my personal statement, I had both my mind and my future set on
As my high school career ends, I notice increasingly how much life that I have yet to live and the opportunities available to me in the years ahead. The past four years have been great preparation for my future endeavors, but college is the path leading to my full potential. In order to reach the end of this path, I utilize my most valuable trait—determination—to set short and long-term goals and achieve them. It is with this “can do” spirit—like the one my grandpa, a former Navy Seabee, evinces through his stories—that I have set my personal goals: to volunteer my time in service to others, further develop leadership skills through experiential learning, and excel at my school work no matter how challenging it may seem. Though these may
Walking into the doors of Delaware County Community College the 1st day of my freshman year, I did not think I would be where I’m at now. I was so cocky towards school, thinking I could slide through college classes just as easy like I did with highschool, Boy, I was wrong. I started skipping classes, not turning in my work on time, and honestly not giving school the best of my ability. Even out of school I was off course, I got my licence right at the beginning of the semester so I was out until 12 every night, sometimes even later. Most of those nights, I didn't even sleep at home. The fact I wasn’t a child anymore and I was in college, I wanted freedom without the responsibility. I actually took INT during my first semester but I didn't take it seriously.
Education is the main goal of college. I had always considered myself a person dedicated to the pursuit of more knowledge and a better education. My mother, being a teacher, had instilled these values in me. When I was in elementary, I tested into a gifted center and from there I tested into selective enrollment college prep. The obvious next step seemed to be college. Looking the scholarship given to me, it just didn’t seem to add up. I had scored a 32 on the ACT but my scholarship was barely covering half of my expenses. But I knew if a just gave up, the meant giving up on everything that I believe in. By pursing college I was able to be challenged, pursue subjects which interested me and discover new pathways that I was interested such as African American studies. Without taking that chance, I may have never received that knowledge.
After barely graduating in the spring of 2017 from Lopez Early College High School, I went straight to my parent’s house not knowing exactly what I was going to do with my life. I knew I had ruined my life after not paying attention to my teachers and counselors about applying to colleges. They said I was a wonderful and intelligent student with a tremendous capacity of succeeding in life. Although everybody thought that about me, I never did. I was constantly under pressure thinking that I had to work in order to support my family economically, so our house was saved. I was also worried about whether my parents were getting divorced after every insignificant argument they had. I had to be an excellent example for my two younger siblings; but even though I tried my best, I never was.
I have been working with Jessica Davis, my advisor, since I've been attending USF. When I finally saw my grades, we spoke about different options for me. We decided to try the petition process to see if it would help my gpa. We are also in the process of switching majors to something I would be more able to handle. I am grateful for her help as she is very patient and understanding of my situation. I plan to work with her until the day that I walk across the stage!
With graduation drawing near I am excited and ready to put my Agricultural Science degree to use in an industry that I am extremely passionate about. Throughout my time at Cal Poly, I have been working for the San Luis Obispo Police Department as a Student Neighborhood Assistant Program Officer. Before I began working at San Luis Obispo Police Department I had always planned on a career in law enforcement, but with graduation quickly approaching I am not certain that is the career path I am meant to take especially with the public's perspective of peace officers today. I can say that during my time with the San Luis Obispo Police Department, I have gained an immense amount of skills through first hand experiences such as organization, leadership,
I am committed to achieving my goals. I will devote myself to my studies allowing me to secure my degree. This also entitling me as a good representative to this program. I hope to be offered the possibility to represent this program. Throughout high school I have worked hard keeping A’s and B’s in all of my classes. As well as taking all of my required courses. I am also participating in a voluntary Pharmacy Technician class my school has just recently offered. By graduation once I have completed the course and passed the required exam I will be a certified Pharmacy Technician. This showing the dedication I am willing to put forth in order to reach my goals. I want to attend college pursuing a nursing degree. I want to provide myself with the beneficial ethics that college will offer. As well as the morals I will recieve being given the opportunity to represent this program. Almost everyone’s goal is to be successful in the journey they choose. Everyone wants to succeed, no one wants to fail. We all want to succeed in life. Whether that success be a high school diploma, college degree, or in an
While at Green Mountain College I hope to grow in knowledge and in experience. I want to not only grow in the classroom but outside of it as well. In order to do this I have to set goals for myself, goals in academics, being more involved in the community, and future goals (after graduating from college). Setting goals will motivate me to want to fully achieve what I want. I need to plan out what I need to accomplish my goals in a realistic way. I need to remind myself that taking criticism and getting out of my comfort zone is ok.
During high school my mother suffered from two minor strokes, a benign brain tumor; she still has slight paralysis. When this occurred during my junior year of high school my grades didn't turn out as well as I wanted them to. I made my mother's well-being my main focus. I knew that my half-brother wouldn't be able to help take care of my mother since he worked and lived in Texas. I took on the responsibility to take care of her and the two flat income property that we live in. I still take care of her presently and that is why I chose to attend Oakton Community College, until her health stabilized. I have been able to stay focused at Oakton with the help of the staff at Oakton and my mother’s health improvements. I have learned from the faculty
Our life is based on a series of complex decisions we have to make, some right and some wrong, but even wrong decisions can motivate us. Two months before my college graduation, I personally realized I made the wrong decision. One year earlier, I decided to become an elementary school teacher. Due to tuition increasing, I decided not to change my major to education because I was paying for school out of pocket.. My plan was to graduate in business and then pursue a teaching certificate. Therefore, I did not apply for any internships or part-time jobs to gain work experience in business. Although I was eager to be a teacher, I was still enjoying my business classes, especially the human resource classes. My favorite class was Staffing, Compensation, and Employee Development. Our semester assignment included simulation of a HR manager associated with a prior employer. Recreating my experience in that company, I created a job
I am in need of financial assistance in order to attend IBC College because I am a low-income student. I was laid off my job in May making it very difficult to find a job without any schooling. I had worked as a Photojournalist for over 22 years, working for several News Stations like, KDBC TV, UNIVISION, KFOX TV, KTSM TV and also working in other cities like Las Vegas and Austin, TX. The way the industry is working right now is by far disappointing, they are slowly getting rid of Photographers and making reporters videotape on their own for cost saving measures making it very difficult for myself and others to find a job. My job search is difficult due to the fact that all I have done in my life is specialized and have no other experience
My current job as a Supplemental Instructor in Accounting 101 at Harper College, as a Supplemental Instructor, my job is to tutor and mentor students from a financial accounting class. I take the class with the students to create a relationship with them, to encourage the students to ask me questions and have a better opportunity to be successful in class. I offer extra study and tutoring sessions three times a week where I use the material I create on my own and use different techniques to help them learn the
I have really high expectations for myself and what I am capable of this fall at Mount Olive College. I have very high goals for myself and have revised what I believe to be a well guided plan to achieve them. I feel eager and excited to unleash my mind, thoughts and the power of my determination. I know that it’s going to be a lot of hard work and its going to take a lot of time. Also, with that comes the bittersweet of sacrifice, of parts of my life that I am going to have to change in order to succeed. But my grandfather has always told me “anything worth having is worth working hard for.” I am my biggest critic and supporter all in one. I know that the only person that can stop me from doing what I came to do is me. No one else has the
