in the early spring when temperatures in the day are above freezing workers on maple farms begin producing syrup. They use drills to make slightly upward facing holes into the tree on the Southside usually half an inch in diameter and two inches deep called taps where sap can be seen dripping. A spell is then inserted into the tap which drips into hanging buckets. Once the buckets are full they are transported into a large pot inside of a sugar shack. In the sugar shack the sap is heated to its boiling point until about sixty-six percent of the water is removed. if the syrup starts to bubble to high a stick of butter can be lightly rubbed on the inside around the top of the pot to avoid overflow. After heating while the syrup is still hot
During my time here at CSN I’ve had a few extenuating circumstances arise while in school which took away from my performance in my classes causing me to either fail or withdraw out of courses and eventually be placed on SAP suspension. My mother was a single parent for a number of years and once I graduated from High School she asked of me to assist with bills in the home since I still resided with her, so I began working for Moneytree which to my surprise was very time demanding and at the time I was without reliable transportation and a manager who was not very flexible with my school schedule. Then in 2010 my family and I became homeless for some time due to the recession which caused my sister to lose her job in 2008, and then my mother in 2010. This left me as the sole provider for my family since I was the only one working full-time with the ability to work additional hours if needed due to the demand of my employer at the time, and my position within the company. Then in 2013 my father who resided in Illinois was diagnosed with Bladder cancer which led to me traveling to
There was a high food shortage in 1946 and this caused many to ration. World War II left a deep wound in India as two and a half million Indian soldiers were sent to aid the allies and 24,000 killed. Many were unemployed as they lost their jobs after the war since there was no need for war production. Gandhi’s party, Indian national congress, created in 1885 seemed it would be the power that ruled after Britain left. This changed, however, as the All Muslim league became popular during World War II. Muslims were a minority compared to the Hindus. The Partition of 1947 created Pakistan, where the Muslims would live, and India, where the Hindus would live.
Poor first-generation college students are underrepresented in medicine, despite their wealth of experiences giving them a unique and significant perspective into the challenges of patients. Even through tireless work and perseverance they may be only a few steps away from achieving their dreams. I am one of those students and I intend to become a physician. My interest in the ABLE Program is rooted in two main reasons. First, its focus on disadvantaged students. Second, ABLE aligns with my long-term goal of service to underserved communities across Michigan.
Which takes place in a thing called a sugar shanty. You back the mule up to where you can hook up the big container that contains the sap to drain it down to a nothing container in the sugar shanty. Then you run on the pipe that makes that sap run down to the boiling pans. Which you have to start a fire under so that it heats up the sap to where it will boil. Then you keep on adding sap for many hours. After a while the sap with boil out almost all of the water to where it is mostly sugar that is when it turns into maple syrup. To test if it is truly maple syrup you have to use a maple syrup thermometer. It has to read just right for it to be maple syrup.
According to Alaina Dewing the maple syrup process starts, close to spring, by removing the sap from the maple trees. There are two ways people generally use to remove the sap. The first way to remove the sap is by drilling a hole in the maple tree, inserting the sap lines, and connecting the sap lines down into a large sap tank.
The thing that surprises me most about the SDAP program are the students who are both very determined in their own ways. They might learn from me that they can have a friend to rely on and talk to. Even the first time meeting one of the students he seemed very comfortable with me. By the end of our session he told me that he really enjoyed hanging out with me and called me his friend. I always look forwards to spending time with him.

During my first day in DTD, and after visiting the NCO Heritage and Education Center, I came up with an idea that could be a little bit crazy but some students from this class can be part of our NCO history.
Each day in the United States, Americans send over 53 million children, approximately 20 percent of the population, off to school with little no issues (Safer Schools Ohio, nd). Keeping our children safe has become an immense undertaking for school districts. Many districts around the country have chosen to partner with local police agencies to provide school resource officers (SRO) in their schools. For many, the additional security is welcomed by parents, however, there are others that claim officers in the school leads to more arrest, suspensions, and the school-to-prison pipeline. This paper will discuss the history of the SRO program, the duties of the SRO, and the impact the SRO program has had on school
The majority of my knowledge on this topic comes from watching and helping my father make syrup over the past 16 years. I would estimate I have made cane syrup around 45-50 times in my life so I know the process well. In addition, I have been to other people’s syrup makings and have picked up knowledge from them as well. I used the internet to find photos to aid in the understanding of the instructions.

I wish to attend the TSSP program to better myself as not only a student, but as a job seeker in the future as well. I feel that the TSSP program can prepare me for the rigidity of college and campus life. As a junior in high school, I feel that now is an appropriate time to start looking into universities and programs that best suit my interests, so I started to look for summer programs for the upcoming summer. When I found TSSP, I also noticed that it was a program sponsored by Tulane University, which is a college of my interest in applying for. I have always wanted to go in the medical field even before junior high, but I never knew how I was going to apply myself into the medical field. When I saw the opportunities to better myself at Tulane, I started to search how I can become affiliated with the university, which is how I found this program.
From when the Algonquians found syrup and used simple tools to extract sap from maple trees, until now, the process has not changed much. An important note is that not many regions have the natural resources of maple trees, to be able to produce the product themselves. Canada, however,
