Sci 275 Final Project

From the moment we wake up in the morning until the time we go to bed each night, we all use different forms of energy to perform our daily activities. On a daily basis I use energy for transportation to commute to and from work and run errands; for cooking meals using either my gas range, microwave or charcoal grill; for heating my home in the winter and cooling my home in the summer; for daily showering, and for lighting my home in order to be comfortable and productive. Most of the resources we rely on for energy are nonrenewable and will soon be depleted.

Most of the energy that we use comes from fossil fuels like petroleum and coal that provide electricity and gas to power our growing energy needs. These fossil fuels, currently providing most of our home energy needs are finite resources, which mean that, they will eventually run out. Furthermore, the world’s population is growing rapidly. Countries are becoming more industrialised and are using notable amount of energy. Individuals are consuming nearly twice as much as energy as they were using 30 years ago. In Australia itself, the total amount of energy consumed by households has increased over the past two decades and is forecast to increase. For my Scican project, I wanted to make sure that I had a topic that was unique and interesting. Choosing a topic could be seen as the most important part of this entire assignment. This one topic dictates your entire project, so you had better not choose a lousy one. I fiddled around with multiple ideas for a while, because lousy topic means lousy assignment. But what could I do? The classic volcano? Too mainstream. Environmental issues? Nah… Curing cancer? Too much work, I am only bronze after all. In the end, I chose psychology.

There are many things that we rely on that are naturally provided by nature from the water that is used to replenish our systems to prevent dehydration, to the air that we breath down to some portions of food that we eat. One of those natural elements are used daily but are often not thought about outside of the scientific or political fields is energy. Energy is all around us there is nothing that is done in the day to day life that can be done without energy. From putting on your shoes to making coffee in the morning even down to driving your vehicle in one way shape or form energy is being used. Just as the ecosystems are in need of repair due to various contributory causes’ energy is also a resource that should be protected just the same. In the following paragraphs the pros and cons of each energy source will be dissected and the law of preservation of energy will be explained.

D. Thesis: Because air pollution is a looming problem for the world, I’d like to share three important facts with you about this topic.

Over the past decade, energy has brought social, economic and environmental advantages and played a major role in the urbanisation and industrial revolution. However, after the uncontrollably frequent use of these energy sources, depletion of these energy sources also became a major concern which brings about its own economic, social and environmental disadvantages. Of a particular concern is the availability of these energy sources which affects both industry and the lives of the consumers.

What do we know about our energy sources and how our energy choices affect the environment? Many people still do not put much though into this topic or pay any attention to the amount of energy they use or where it comes from. For some it is just willful negligence, but for many others it may be due to a lack of knowledge on the subject. Perhaps it is a good idea to pay closer attention and educate ourselves so we can make informed decisions that may lead to less stress on our wallets and on our environment. In order to make a change, we should observe our currently used energy sources in everyday life, the impact of increasing energy uses, and observe all of the alternative options available to us.

PURPOSE: To persuade my audience that we must take action now to control air pollution

The United States consumes more energy than needed, compared to the rest of the world. However, to properly address such an issue as over consumption of energy, one first must understand what “energy” is.

Have you ever wondered what life would be like without energy? I’m going to go out on a limb and say you haven’t thought about it, but you probably should because energy is way more important than you think. Energy is a primary input for almost all activities, which means it is vital for improvement in every area of life. The use of energy is evident in certain sectors such as transport, commerce, industry, telecommunication, household and agricultural service. With such high demands in these sectors, it has forced us focus on achieving continuous supply without harming the environment. These problems just did come out of nowhere. The have been around for thousands of year, maybe more. The most recent problem has been the use of nonrenewable resources, which is harmful to the environment. Society today is facing the peak of oil and gas. As well as, fossil fuel still being the main source of energy, which may be exhausted in a few hundred year. We need change in our sources of energy, which is why renewable energy has been occurring in recent years, and the three main renewable energy sources are heat energy, solar energy, and wind energy.

Energy is the driver of global economic development and prosperity [1]. It fuels the manufacturing processes; it keeps buildings warm or cool, and powers a huge array of electrical appliances from lighting and refrigeration, through to the proliferation of modern consumer electronics [2]. As nations develop and their economies grow, so too does the consumption of resources in general and energy resources in particular. Consequently, the efficient exploitation and development of a nation’s energy resources is thus of great importance to the progress and well-being of the consuming public and the overall growth of the economy [3].

Many concerns that some may have about the energy we use, the cost to produce and use this energy as well as the effects it has on the environment could possibly be alleviated, to some extent, but may not resolve all that has not yet been foreseen or even understood. The use of energy is in great demand, as population continues to grow in America and around the world. Every day, people in society rely upon some type of energy source to provide reasonable means to accommodate needs; such as to power their homes with electric or to fuel their automobiles for transportation.

Over the next few slides we will explore the extent to which pollution has affected our lives and some scientific recommendations that can be put in place to combat this.

This report discusses the role of energy in sustainable development goals. The report highlights on the target set by the United Nations and the time-frame given to achieve these targets. Some of the challenges hindering sustainable development especially in the poor sections of the population and measures needed to be taken have also been identified. It concludes with the primary principles and basic practices needed to be taken in order to achieve the sustainable development goals.
