Science Project ANIMALS Sea Horse Name: Sea Horse - Hippocampus Adaptations: A long snout to catch prey, and a long curly tail to grab coral and sea grass due to high current pressure. Human Impact: Water pollution can sometimes directly harm Seahorses and other sea life, especially pesticide, oil and gas. Other pollutants include nitrogen, phosphorus, sewage and waste runoff that can cause algae blooms which create oxygen-free dead zones as they die off and rot. Human impact also causes destruction to many habitats therefore making seahorses have to move to a new habitat more vulnerable to predators. Sea Star 8 Arms Name: Sea Star – Asteroidea Adaptations: A starfish is quite vulnerable to predators. So a handy feature the sea star has is that if an arm gets ripped off by a predator, it can regenerate, only if the …show more content…
But oysters a sealed shut together, making it really hard to open. So they use the sucker-like feet on their arms to pull the oyster open. Additionally, they can climb rocky landscapes using their sucker-like feet. Human Impact: We as humans have been occasionally dumping chemical wastes into the ocean, causing the sea stars to spread apart from each other. Therefore, the sea stars are unable to mingle with each other causing their population to decrease. Additionally, this also genetically modifies them making them more diverse. PLANTS Name: Sweet pittosporum - Pittosporum undulatum Adaptations: It has dense leaves and can grow to 10-15 metres tall so it can capture the most amount of sunlight possible also enabling it to develop faster. The plant also develops an orange fruit which drops many seeds when opened. This fruit attracts many birds which then birds open dropping the seeds and extending the plants territory. Human Impact: There is no human impact on the plant. The Bleeding Heart Name: The Bleeding Heart - Lamprocapnos
The southern ocean has turned into a dumping ground for unwanted rubbish. They throw away plastics, fishing nets and hooks which cause terrible, slow deaths of many species each year. Lots of small whales, seals and other animals are swallowing, choking or becoming trapped in the rubbish, this is decreasing the number of the species.
The way it gets its prey is by using its long tongue. This tongue has a sticky spot on the tip just like frogs. It can use this tongue for like a grip. If it happens not to use its tongue, it can use its powerful jaw.
The root of this particular plant is black. This makes this one of the easiest ways to differentiate this plant from others in its family. The roots have vertical and horizontal roots. It reproduces most effectively using these creeping black roots. The root system can cover up to twelve square yards in one growing season (Beck 2013) That is just how far the roots will spread out. The roots will also go very deep into the soil making it almost impossible to pull out once the plant has been established. When the roots spread it can send up many small plants essentially taking over an area in a very small amount of
Seahorses are one of the many miniature sized creatures of the sea. When endangered by predators, seahorses amazingly have the capability to change color and can camouflage themselves. A seahorse’s size can vary from a staple to a hammer. Although they are fish, they do not have fins; instead they use their long tails to move around. Because they use their tails for transportation, they are extremely poor swimmers. Since they aren’t strong swimmers, they spend most of their time hanging onto things, like seaweed. Although they eat up to fifty times a day, seahorses don’t have teeth. Instead of chewing on their food, they suck it up with their snout. Seahorses are renowned for many things, but one of them is the fact that the male seahorse carries and gives birth to the babies. Seahorses are an example of one of God’s spectacular sea creatures.
Our oceans have Declined drastically because of human related factors. Overfishing has caused several species to become endangered, almost to the point of extinction. The continuous fishing of certain species drastically reduces populations and affects more than just the hunted fish. The use of destructive fishing practices has also hurt the environment. Pollution is killing plants and animals alike. More importantly the coral reefs are being bleached and are unable to recover and are dying. Farming and industrial chemicals are promoting the growth of harmful algae that hurt not only people around the site, but the organisms like fish and plants living in the waters nearby. Climate change contributes to many of the problems
Some ways seahorses have adapted to better survive in their habitat is by learning ways to eat. In paragraph 2 source 1 it states "There, they hang out and hang on by wrapping their prehensile tails around seaweed or some other support. Then underwater currents deliver their food—tiny sea animals and plants called plankton." This is showing that the sea horse has learned and adapted to new ways or getting their food. Another way they have adapted to their habitat is they learned to blend in so they could hide from their predators. In paragraph 3 source 1 it states " They can change colors to camouflage themselves, and feature bumps called tubercles that also help them blend in." This shows that the sea horses have adapted by learning to
There's an adaptation for everything. Mammals, reptiles, and these deep-sea creatures as well. For some animals to live functionally in the environments in which they were placed, they develop some rather unusual traits and features to help them to survive in their habitat. The giant squid, zombie worms, large jellyfish and even the yeti crab serve as excellent examples of animals which developed certain adaptations to help them live in their extreme deep-sea environment.
Human impacts on the marine environment have increased a lot over the years as we have become more advanced in out technology and devices. Littering, recreational activities and over fishing are just some of the major impacts that have taken a toll on the ocean. Scientists have said that the man made pollutions have put extra stress on the already endangered or threatened species.
When a predator is depleted from the oceans it has an effect on the balance along with the stability of that specific area that has been fished. Professor Villy Christensen, an ecosystem modeler with a background in fisheries science stated “Predators are important for maintaining healthy ecosystems also, where we have had collapsed of the larger fish, it has taken many decades for them to rebuild” (Shiffman, paragraph 3). As a result of the removal of these predatory fish smaller schools of fish end up growing lager which eat more of the coral combined with the decaying fish that are not being eaten destroy reefs including their survivability. Consequently, the millions of people that rely on fish suffer both economically as well as nutritious, a basic survival for those that live on the
They have a round mouth sucker on their skin that helps the get their prey (Hardisty, M. W. and I. C. Potter.
From a simple seed, it shows how the plant grow. Just like any other living organism, it undergo with a process wherein growth and evolution can be observe. Time is very significant for a small thing to change and grow. There are three things that can be observe in a growing plant. The first one is change. It is very obvious for a plant to have changes in this kind of stage. from a small seed, it will turn in to a green and tall plant. As time pass by, many changes will occur and mostly are physical changes. the features will alter and also its size. some plants become wider and other becomes taller. The second one is the needs of a plant so that it with be able to grow and change. As the plant grows, the more nutrients it needs.
The teacher continued “The plant continues to take in the sunlight to make food and starts to grow even more. The plant grows a stem then on the stem it grows buds. The buds grow even more and then the buds will grow a flower or leaves.
The Blue ringed octopus can move several different ways. One way is by drawing water into a cavity in its body, and then dismissing the jet of
The animals are characterized by long snouts which they use to suck up food. The eyes of seahorses can move independently of each other.
The Sea anemones spend a lot of time out of the water, so they need to conserve water in order to survive. At low tide, the sea anemone will draw tentacles into it’s mouth, to stop desiccation, at mid tide. When they are in the low tidal zone, they will begin to unfold their
