In the simulation today, we split up into our respective chambers of Congress, and within the House we split up into the House Internal Matters Committee, the Government Operations Committee, and the Budget Committee. In the Internal Matters Committee and the Government Operations Committee we reviewed our mail and took notes on the mail we received. We then merged and briefly discussed our mail and our stances on the legislation written about in the mail. We then joined forces with the Budget Committee to discuss the budget. There were various debates about raising funds for different agencies and departments favored by each political party. The Senate passed the compromised version of Bill 111 and the President signed this bill into law. …show more content…
and Mrs. Lenley. Members of the House and the Senate, as well as the President, were all discussing the budget and the advantages and disadvantages of various pieces of legislation. There were heated debates over which areas of the government should see an increase in their budgets, especially for education and the military, and where this money should come from. While the Media reported about the African American protests to stop the bombings of African American churches and the alcohol litigation fund, the President of Conference for a Separate Nation played a role in today’s simulation by encouraging members of the House and Senate to ask questions. This person also brought attention to the bombings of the African American churches and the lack of government action, which encouraged the Senate and the President to be even more against the Republican-favored Bill 247, which extends the practice of free speech. The attorney for Dr. and Mrs. Linley, the couple who run the anti-homosexual website, also brought attention to the issue of free speech. While the Republicans in the House offered to pass Bill 247 in exchange for the passing of Bill 274, which would be considered a win for gay rights, the Democrats in Congress did not agree to do …show more content…
Members of Congress and the President used the strategy of persuasion when attempting to encourage the passing of certain legislation. Players attempting to persuade other players by emphasizing how both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party would benefit if this legislation was passed. There were many conversations where a player would agree to pass a certain piece of legislation in their chamber if the other chamber agreed to pass a different piece of legislation favored by the first players, so that both of their interests would be heard. Lastly, I observed the strategy of persuasion between Democratic and Republican members of the Budget Committee in the House. Players would attempt to encourage other players to give more money to a certain governmental area by using the information presented in letters sent from individuals or groups of individuals calling for an increase in budget in their respective areas. In the simulation today, Bill 111 was passed. This is a gain for both the Republican and Democratic parties, since both of their interests are reflected in the bill due to various compromises and bargains. However, not all constituents won as a result of the passing of this bill, since this bill encourages big business and goes not call for businesses with less than 100 full-time employees to pass this
Senator Jeffrey’s bill was to organize a camp for kids that need help. First Senator Jefferson has to propose the bill in front of Senate after he is done writing it, and after that it is sent into a committee to deem the importance of the bill. After that it is sent back and forth from the House and the Senate and is amended and voted yes or no on. If both the
Each time a bill is sent to become a law it always becomes a hasseling process where if an individual really wants it he or she will fight for it. This process can take months or even years to even come close to finishing, sometimes the bill at the end isn 't entirely what it originally was. Like everywhere in the world if a person or group wishes to get something done, connections are the easiest path to achieve what one wants. By connections I mean the more powerful and influencial people you know the better chance one has to look better among the rest. In this quick essay I 'll be explaining the process from when a bill is born and passes to be a law or to see when it dies.
Thank You For Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion is a title written by the not-so-famous, (but extremely well-versed) Jay Heinrichs. Although the title is indeed a mouthful, it serves its purpose in drawing the reader in. Also; the extremely long title is a little hint of what Heinrichs entails in his book, an endless supply of information on how to correctly and influentially utilize rhetoric, the art of persuasion.
There are away multiple sides and to trick others into following you will only grant you short term success. Political leaders like Donald Trump promise certain things in their campaign that never follow through like his famous wall that will stop immigration. Yes he has tried to make a move but his promise did not keep up which can decline his support. When you trick someone they eventually will find out or maybe they will not but eventually they will have to disagree with you at some point. Artifice especially in politics will only get you so far as with
With both sides fighting over “how” to go with this bill, they did not execute it out.
One of the important themes that I have witnessed this semester while doing the statecraft simulation was anarchy. Here are some examples of how anarchy happened in our Statecraft world; every president of each country was doing whatever came to his/her mind. They chose the attribute for their countries based on their thoughts, behavior, and how they want to act against or with the others. There was no central authority to impede certain actions that the countries might make against one another. Therefore, Some countries attempted to be the powerful countries because they had well-armed, aggressive, and fearless military with many air forces and divisions. Anarchy helped those countries to attack and conquer less powerful countries. For instance, the Empire of Naponiello and country 6 took advantage of the lack of central authority to destroy and smash Cortarro for no reliable and convictive
Sometimes this takes the form of wooing legislators, including legislators of another political party or ideological persuasion. When polarization and partisanship make such wooing hard if not impossible, that same ambition is likely to take the form of aiding the election of candidates who can be counted on to support one's
Persuading an audience can be done in several different fashions, one of which is Hugh Rank’s Model of Persuasion. Rank’s model states that two major strategies are used to achieve the particular goal of persuasion. These strategies are nicely set into two main schemas; the first method is to exaggerate an aspect of something, known as “intensify.” While the second is to discredit it, which is referred to as “downplay.” Al Franken, Jeffrey Snyder, Harlan Ellison, and George Will, have all written persuasive articles about gun control.
One of the major things different about our mock congress is that there is no party divide. No one mentioned wether they were a Republican or a Democrat in our debates because it didn't matter. Although, sometimes you could guess from the bill people were trying to pass or the way they were arguing their point but not one cared to actually ask. Another difference is that there is no Staff System supporting you and empowering your bill. A staff system would research every detail making sure that ,whatever the bill is, that it is detailed and precise where as we only have however much research we can find on the internet and possibly the library. Also there was no preventing a bill from passing in our little congress like a filibuster or
On behalf of the State Department I was involved in an Israeli foreign policy and decision-making simulation where members were to agree upon various minimal peace terms and implementations. This brief for General H. R. McMaster will provide the most thorough analysis of the outcomes from this simulation to provide the best suggestions for the United States involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The opening remarks by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were that the ministers must agree in consensus or the proposition shall not pass, the cabinet must decide on their most minimal peace terms, and at the conclusion of deliberations all ministers must agree or resign. (February 27 Minutes) Netanyahu met
This film show what really happens in the cabinet meeting where a representative of each of separate branch of government or people that access the nation’s budget. However, this those not make the president eligible to make any changes, it should be passed to senates later getting a vote from the congress.
The Congress of the 1950s, known as the “textbook Congress”, is quite different than the Congress of the today. Our Author notes six legislative folkways that were noted by political scientist
For example, many people agree that shoplifting is wrong, because the effects from stealing from another cause more suffering than pleasure for all involved. Persuasion can be used to try and reason with the potential shoplifter so they change their mind and decide not to steal. However, persuasion
The persuasion scenario our group choose to observe is the events that happen in United States of America in 19th century. It’s the President Abraham Lincoln famous Gettysburg address. One of the main points for Lincoln when he giving this speech is to persuade both union and confederate (two different sides during the civil war) citizens to come join together to create the new equal and justice United States. This persuasion speech made me known why many people saw him as the great man. He did not antagonize, nor did he show disrespect to the dead, even those who fought for the Confederacy (who is oppose to Lincoln administration). He treated them all as people of one country, and honored them all equally. Lincoln’s respect for every man
Negotiating is something that has been around since the beginning of mankind. We all start off negotiating as little kids, even for little things such as candy and toys. When we grow up, negotiating becomes sort of the norm. We negotiate consciously and subconsciously every single day. When you think about it, negotiation takes up most of our lives. We are always trying to see what we can get as a benefit without giving up much. It always comes down to the pie, how big is the pie and who can get the biggest slice. As we become adults with careers, there are ever some that become flat our ‘Negotiators’. This means that all they do for a living is negotiate. They are master negotiators and are praised for being so. When it comes to negotiation, persuasion is also within that talent. You have to be able to get what you want from people without them feeling like they are being taken advantage of and that they are also getting just as big a piece of the pie as you are getting, although in reality they are not.
