Sexual Responce Cycle

The changes and responses that occur in the body of both men and women when sexually aroused are referred to as the sexual response cycle. The sexual response cycle is divided into four separate phases which include excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. These changes are similar for both men and women. Surveys have also showed that men reported reaching an orgasm too early and being concerned about their performance. Nevid and Rathus (2005) stated that the sexual dysfunctions classified by the American Psychiatric Association (2000) are hypoactive sexual desire disorder, female sexual arousal disorder, male erectile disorder, orgasmic disorder, and premature ejaculation.

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder consists of lack of interest in sexual activity, low sexual drive, and absence of sexual fantasies. A person with this disorder may believe that these things fall within normal sexual behavior.

Female sexual arousal disorder refers to the difficulty in becoming or remaining lubricated during sexual intercourse. This is similar to the male’s erectile disorder, in which the male has difficulty in attaining or maintaining an erection through sexual intercourse. Both of these disorders are determined by the persistency of the symptoms.

In both men and women, orgasmic disorder refers to the delayed or inability to reach an orgasm. This disorder is more common in women, and sometimes may occur with one partner but not with another. Premature ejaculation occurs when men persistently ejaculates quickly and with very little sexual stimulation.
