If you turn on the television or flip through a fashion magazine, it is very likely you will presented with many displays of hypersexualization of girls and women in advertising images and in media. There are many components to sexualization. It occurs, according to the American Psychological Association, when “a person’s value comes only from his or her sexual appeal or behavior, to the exclusion of other characteristics.” This person is held to a standard that equates physical attractiveness with being sexy. “Sexualization” happens when a person is sexually objectified- that is, made into a thing for others’ sexual use, rather than being seen as a person with their own independent actions and abilities to make decisions. Oftentimes, sexuality is inappropriately imposed upon a person without their knowing it or consent. Sometimes, researchers use the word “hypersexualization” to describe roughly the same idea. In the article, “Media’s Growing Sexualization of Women”, hypersexualization is defined as, “The act of making something extremely sexual and erotic.”

There is a huge controversy in whether or not young girls are sexualized in the media. I absolutely agree that young girls and women are sexualized, us women are shown as sex objects and the world thinks its right. As a community, we should not let the media provoke women in the way they do. It disgusting on how they show women in tiny bathing suits. When did beauty ever become on what’s on the outside of a human being, beauty is on the inside; what’s in the heart. The media has set crazy standards for young girls and everyone is to blind to realize.

With the media becoming the main source from which the current society gets their daily information concerning products, news stories, and entertainment, it is wise to think critically about the messages they are conveying to us. These corporations spend large sums of money every day in order to grasp our attention. The question as to whether or not they have their customer’s best interest in mind arises and leaves the public no answer but to look to the advertisements they have produced. Many different articles and essays use statistics to back up their claims but you is to say if they are accurate or not? In “Little Girls or Little Women? The Disney Princess Effect” by Stephanie Hanes and “Toddlers in Tiaras” by Skip Hollandsworth they use many different statistics to back up their claims that the media is sexualizing little girls and that it is a problem for themselves and society. Even though they shock you with their disturbing statistics you wouldn’t know if they were correct without some further research.

Movies, magazines, advertisements, television, music videos and even music lyrics are just a handful of media sources where I have noticed an increased focus on women being viewed as sexual objects, instead of women proposing an empowering message. Many people in our society are not aware of the extent in which sexualisation of women in the media is occurring every day of our lives; this is because we live in a culture where sexuality is more accepted; this is is having negative effects on the social aspect of our society. So, has the media and society pushed sexualisation too far? It is believed that women are hyper-sexualised in the media and this is changing the way women are looked at; but what are we actively doing as a society to reduce this issue?

Media portrays femininity on a daily, in our lives. Femininity are the qualities that traditionally associate with females. In movies femininity are strongly showed. People of all ages are exposed to the expectations of femininity which affects our views on female. In the media such as movies like “Cinderella” the portrayal reinforces gender stereotypes to their audience.

The sexualization of women and girls surround Americans and is damaging to females as well as to American society. Females receive the sexualized messages regarding their appearance and how they should act via the media, retailers, and American society’s acceptance of these behaviors. As a mother, Girl Scout Leader, and school paraprofessional I cannot help but to question are these messages inflicting psychological damage on girls? Whom can I hold accountable for sexualizing female youth? What can I do to prevent sexualization from affecting all of the young girls in my life? The sexualization of girls is unacceptable because it is degrading to females, can cause serious life-long psychological damage and sexist attitudes, and may lead to violence against women and girls.

It would be nearly impossible for one to try and count the amount of products in today’s market aimed at bettering one 's self exterior. The Millennial’s are often dubbed as the ‘most selfish generation’ because the majority is preoccupied with its self-image and with receiving praise in return for working toward perfecting this self-image. Media sexualization is guaranteed to spark a response and has become common to the point where viewers are becoming desensitized to the obvious extremes. Advertisers take note of this and the evidence is conspicuous.

Women in society feel they are being objectified, and feel as if they are not getting the same respect as men. Through many examples it is shown that not just women, but men are also being objectified. After the realization of men being objectified as well, there is a combination of objectification towards women, and men throughout all forms of media, for the reason of publicity.

The issue of how women are portrayed in the media is always a source of irritation to me. The first magazine I analyzed was Glamour. The cover is a woman in a pair of panties, with a shirt on tied just below her breasts. The biggest headline of that magazine is "a sexier body at any size". The second magazine I analyzed was Sports Illustrated. Every Sports Illustrated magazine has a woman scantily clad, and the one that I specifically analyzed featured a woman in a nude colored string bikini pulling the bottoms down. The big headline on the cover of that one was "bikinis or nothing". The last magazine I analyzed was Cosmopolitan. The cover featured a woman turned sideways with her breast in clear view and it the headline was "Get Fit Secret for a Tight

Media today portrays gender in many different ways. Whether it’s a women doing a man’s job or vice-versa. Overall magazines, tv commercials or any type of advertisement for the most part women are seen as a sex symbol while guys are the hard workers. I did a random you tube search for Tv commercials. People look at the media to determine how they should dress, act and in some cases even how they should perform sexually. There are the fashion magazines that focus on beauty, attracting and satisfying men, self-improvement, and (occasionally) work and politics. Examples are Vogue (emphasizing fashion and makeup), Cosmopolitan (emphasizing sexuality and relationships with men), and Self (emphasizing self-improvement and employment).
