Have you ever heard what a GMO is? A GMO is a genetically modified organism, such of which is not labeled on items. Should GMOs be labeled? Some experts say that it should. They say that consumers buy products from companies, of which they trust to list the ingredients. However, most consumers are not informed of what GMO products are in their meals, or even what GMOs are. As said before, GMOs are genetically modified organisms, and can be dangerous, so experts say. They say that the GMO process causes diseases such as cancer or diabetes, and some also say that GM foods can cause allergic reactions. They are saying this because, as they have discovered, some companies have mixed protein from nuts and inserted into beans, which can be harmful
GMOs can cause environmental damage and health problems for consumers. Anti-GMO organization Center for Food Safety said genetic engineering of plants and animals is, potentially. Lallanilla refers to GMO crops as “Frankenfoods.” The long-term effect of GMOs still remains unknown. They have been linked to toxic allergic reactions, sick, sterile and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals.
The battle over whether food with GMOs should be labeled as such or not, continuez in The Battle Over GMOs by Alessandra Potenza illustrates what a GMO is and why they need to be labeled. First of all GMO stands for genetically modified organism, meaning GMOs are organisms that have been genetically modified to include a gene from another species to produce a certain trait. The reason that some people are very upset at the whole GMO thing is because some companies that include GMOs in their products are refusing to label the fact that they use GMOs. Outrage has sparked everywhere over this and people are demanding that companies using GMOs in their products must label them. The companies on the other hand are claiming that they have a right to privacy and are claiming that the FDA, which stands for Food and Drug Administration, have approved the GMO usage in their products.. This reader believes that we the people have a right to know what is in our food and decide if we still want to consume it.
Like every other product there are also negative effects. Some feel that we need to get rid of GMO’s because of the negative effects. Do you? Most of the harmful effects are to the human consumption. Although there are less pesticide use, are there really healthier for you? Because a the food has been modified you may not get all the nutrition of the plant. Putting a different gene into a plant is risky as well, if that gene becomes damaged during the process the toxic level could alter, making the product toxic to your
The Federal Government should require labeling of GMO’s on genetically modified foods. The people deserve to know what they put in their bodies. Some of the food is very unhealthy and some people are completely unaware of that fact. Many food companies do not put out all the information about what goes into the food in which we consume, if the Federal government were to require labeling of all GMO foods then the people could be well educated about what they put inside their bodies, and know if it is good for them or not. GMO stands for genetically modified foods, a genetically modified food is “..an organism whose genome has been altered by the techniques of genetic engineering so that its DNA contains one or more genes not normally found
Don’t you just love the smell of bread and butter and the delicious taste of brownies and muffins? Well, now more than 18 million Americans no longer can enjoy the great taste of these gluten foods, thanks to GMOs. GMOs (genetically modified organisms) are the result of a laboratory process where genes are taken from one species and inserted into another in an attempt to obtain a wanted characteristic, however, no one knows the long-term effect of GMOs. Genetically engineered foods are linked to gluten disorders and are known to cause birth defects. So why do people keep eating them? Consumers still inadvertently eat these foods, because there is no warning label to educate them otherwise. Foods with GMO genes need to be labeled so that people won’t unknowingly consume these genetically modified ingredients without their consent.
GMO is the acronym for Genetically Modified Organism, and are organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory. These are measures taken in order to make food last longer. This method is reasonably questioned by some consumers who question how safe GMOS are. Those are the same consumers who demand their food to be labeled.
In the past decade genetically modified foods have been have made a world of stir about whether these foods are beneficial to our society or if they are actually hurtful. There is plenty information that is available to help support both sides of the issue but for every positive thing there is also a negative consequence. With genetically-modified foods being a trendy topic and being like all great debates it has its prons and cons, so it all comes down to whether the good will supercede the bad, or vice versa.
GMO’s stand for “genetically modified organism” (Google). They are foods that we encounter almost every day. “Although nine out of ten scientists from the American Association for the Advancement of Science say GMOs are "generally safe" to eat” (fact about GMO’s). That still doesn’t mean that they are good for us. Genetically modified foods were created with the intention to improve overall quality of life. However, they are associated with various environmental, health, and economic risks that render them to be more harmful than helpful.
Do you want to know what you are eating? Have you gotten sick over the past few years and not known why? Many people have gotten sick over the increase of food products with GMOs within them. Over the years many have argued that GMOs aren’t what is causing the increase in death and the decrease in birth, but many say it is the problem. GMOs should be labeled on our foods today because of the amount of health problems, and consumers want to know what they are eating. After all, it is what is going into our bodies.
According to Jeffrey Smith, this process can cause the organisms to have unknown effects such as toxins, diseases, and nutritional problems (2006). Along with that, the health risks from consuming products containing GMOs are enough to turn people away. According to the American Academy of Environmental Science, “several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including infertility, immune dysregulation, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes associated with cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, cell signaling, and protein formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen, and gastrointestinal system”(2009). Finding out that GMOs caused all of these issues to animals, people will start to question the safety of the GM food products. This alone can scare the consumers and discourage them from purchasing products containing GMOs. However, that may no longer be a choice
Genetically modified organisms should be labeled because all of the health risks are still unknown. According to the article, GMO Foods Should be Labeled by Ajita White, they state, “Specific engineered
Off and on over the years, I have heard about GMO’s from time to time. GMO’s are genetically modified Organisms. Which basically means that they have been changed by means of science to be resistant to bugs or other issues that crops face. In the American food supply GMO’s are quite common, we don’t even know if we are eating them. As of right now “70 to 80 percent of processed food that Americans consume contain plants that have been genetically engineered” (source 2). This being the case there are a number of ethical concerns raised by this. A couple examples are whether or not they will cause disease or allergies in humans through ingestion or by other means, whether or not they are environmentally safe, and if they should be labeled so that we know that we are eating them. I myself have no issue with GMO’s one way or the other, though I can understand people’s
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are genetic materials; which have been altered through biotechnology. Many crops sold around the world are genetically modified. GMOs undergo changes to fit a specific purpose such as pest-resistant crops. Despite the fact that GMOs are commonly used, there has been many disagreements regarding whether or not they should be labeled. Although GMOs have been deemed safe by the FDA they concluded that labeling GMOs are unnecessary, citizens disagree and suggest GMOs should be labeled because labels provide benefits and also allow people to have positive attitudes regarding GMOs; also not labeling GMOs infringes on an American citizen’s freedom and the labels could start a governmental public campaign
GMO’s can be very dangerous to everyone because, they can effect some of the youngest of society, and harmful foods are not even labeled, also GMO’s are proven to be a leading factor in allergies.
I believe that GMO foods should have labels indicating that they are made from genetic material. This would positively support the society, the environment, and the economy. The entire world would benefit by companies simply putting more informing labels on their products. The most important aspect of this question is the positive social consequence of putting labels on GMO foods. People would be alerted to “the potentials to provoke allergic reaction, gene transfer, and outcrossing” (Frequently Asked Questions on Genetically Modified Foods). This could be life changing in some cases in case there was a genetically modified food that was changed with something that might cause a severe allergic reaction to someone. This would also be helpful
