The Arab/Israeli conflict is a conflict between the Arabs and the Jews over a small piece of land known as the holy land which is an area in the Middle East of the Arab world. The Arabs call the land Palestine, the Jews call it Israel but both religions have strong religious links with the land. Moreover, adding the traditions, values, and norms that incorporated within the society, reaches for further understanding the bases of the culture described. Palestine is a region between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, situated at a strategic location between Egypt, Syria and Arabia. It is also the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity. Thus, this region has a long and tumultuous history as a crossroad for religion, culture, commerce, and politics. Palestine has been controlled by numerous different peoples, including Ancient Egyptians, Canaanites, Israelites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, the Sunni Arab Caliphates, the Shia Fatimid Caliphate, Crusaders, Ayyubids, Mameluks, Ottomans, the British and modern Israelis and Palestinians. According to this, the boundaries of this region have changed throughout history, and were first defined in modern times by the Franco-British boundary agreement (1920) and the Transjordan memorandum of 16 September 1922, during the mandate period. (Agoston and Masters, 2009) The Jewish and the Arab both consider Palestine as inherent territory, which was the one of the reasons led to Israeli- Palestinian conflict. Before getting all sophisticated and going into depth about this issue, I would like to break down each subject that would be discussed. Conflict is defined as incompatibility or interference, as of one idea, desire, event, or activity with another. Palestine (also called the Holy Land) is an ancient country in South-West Asia, on the East coast of the Mediterranean. Palestine is also a country divided between Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. Lastly, Israel is a republic in South-West Asia on the Mediterranean, formed as a Jewish state in May of 1948. These two, the Israelis and Palestinians, have been fighting for decades. The main reasons include international agreement, borders, economic security, water resources, sovereignty of Jerusalem, Israeli settlements, Palestinian freedom of movement due to barriers, and resolving Palestinian claims of a right of return for their refugees.

The Arab-Israeli conflict resulted not from a century long feud between Islam and Judaism, but from “claims to the same territory by competing nationalist movements.” These two movements, Zionism and Arab Nationalism, showcase the emerging question of identity during the 19th and 20th centuries. The Arab states, long ruled by Western colonial powers, emerged from the Mandate system weak and powerless. Why British troops did not leave Palestine until May 1st, 1948. Prior to this, the British proclaimed their support for a Jewish state through the Balfour Declaration (1917). In 1947 the United Nations released resolution no. 181 which created two states, one Palestinian-Arab, and one Jewish, leaving Jerusalem and Bethlehem as an international zone. The state of Israel was officially established in 1948. The Arab states refused to recognize the legitimacy of Israel, prompting Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, to declare war (1947-1958). This decision proved embarrassing as Israel, winning the war, forced out 700,000 Palestinian refugees. In turn, Israel refused to recognize the Palestinian state. The Zionist movement gained the momentum it needed to strengthen the state of Israel.

The State of Israel, one of the youngest countries in today’s world, is no stranger to conflict. Prior to the removal of the British Mandatory Palestine tension between the Palestinians and the Jews were high as immigrants from Europe flooded into Palestinian territory.

Jerusalem is considered the Holy Land for Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The Jews’ claims to the land are based upon Biblical promise to Abraham and his descendants, historical fact that it was a site of the Jewish Kingdom of Israel, and Jewish need for a haven from the European anti-Semitism. The Arabs’ claim to the land are based upon Continuous residence in the country for hundreds of years, represented the demographic majority, and finally God’s promise of the land to children of Abraham and includes Arabs as well. After Israel declared independence on May, 14, 1948, the fighting exacerbated. Other Arab forces joined the Palestinians in a fight to retrieve their land. On this day, May 14, 1948, the Arabs launched an air attack on Tel Aviv, the second most populous city in Israel. Following This action the Arabs invaded the former Palestinian mandate which included Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Egypt.
