Social inequality exists in the United States through the Elite’s power to maintain their dominance in the United States capitalist system. The Elite Ruling class is made of the upper class and this class of individuals share similar ideology and are the members of the United State’s Superstructure. The Elite Ruling Class members of society are the decision and policy makers in the United States. Research and history has proven that many policies and decisions made by the Elite Ruling Class serve their own interest and promote their ideas. These decisions are the source of the inequality in the United States and it contributes to their ability to maintain their dominant status. The inequality is trickled down to the other classes through social policy and social institutions that affect our lives everyday citizens. A major example of this social inequality can be seen in the United States housing market or home ownership. A significant amount of studies, statics and data supports the evidence of social inequality within the US housing market or home ownership. The following passages will discuss social inequality in the United States as it is connected to Karl Marx’s theory of capitalism’s power and influence of the Elite Dominant i.e. the Ruling Class view as it relates to homeownership within the United States. Karl Marx’s theory however focuses mostly on economic s and the difference between upper and lower class not race. It is also important to point out that the Elite
I believe inequality in the united states is increasing, here is why. The kuznets curve i formula showing that inequality increases during the early stages of capitalist development, then declines and evenutally stabilizes at a relatively low level. According to studies the united states inequality peaked before world war II, declined through the 1950s and remained relatively the same through the 1970s. Industrial societies helped reduce inqualty with thngs like, health insurance, welfare, this gave people chances to move up. In the recent studies there is evidence that some capitalist economics have entered a fourth stage, where inequality is increasing. In the united states during the past 30 years the rich have gotten more richer, middle
The subject of equity has ascertained that the economic prowess of a nation is insufficient as a measure of progress. The United States is among the worst in the matter of wealth distribution, and yet it is one of the world’s leading economies. The inequality situation has been worsening over the years and has been a keen campaign theme for the liberals in the American politics. The nation has thrived economically since the 1980s, and the levels of inequality have grown over the same period. The government through its public policies is a key factor in the growth of the economy as well as the level of inequality. The capitalistic market in the US is vital in the economic prowess of the economy. The key failure of the capitalistic market lies
The conversation about economic inequality is not one that only exists in today’s contemporary society but rather one that continued through time, evolving with the changes in different societies. From before the existence of agrarian societies through the industrial revolution and even up till today, the topic of economic inequality is one whose moral implications to the equality of all individuals has been and always will be questioned. Today, it is one of the most debated issues in the United States. Regardless of the terminology used to discuss it—economic inequality, income gap, or wealth disparities—it is heatedly conferred and everyone has an opinion on it. Is it right or wrong? Should it exist? Is it justified? Does it corrupt our
In the world, people are judged on their color, height, the gender they are attracted to, or what someone was born as. People are trying to stop lessen the amount of social inequities in our country, but it is not making as much an impact as it needs to. People are standing up for women's rights, standing up for inequality, and standing up to bullies, yet there is still inequality in the world. As the world starts to advance more, there has to be awareness brought to the topic of social inequality and persecution. Social inequalities are impacting teens in America, authors are starting to make an impact on this problem, and different genres of literature are being used as a tool to communicate with other people in America about the situation.
Another reason why social inequality persist is because theres a negative culture for the poor. Many people living in poverty have poor cultural views that end up preventing them from moving up economically. They don’t value education as much and don’t think about their future but instead think about the present. For example, many young kids who live in poverty drop out of school and sell drugs. The reason is they don’t think there is a point to stay in school when they can start earning money right now. The cause of this problem is the lack of opportunity. Many of them know that they won’t be able to afford to go to college or attend a good school, so they don’t see the point in wasting their time. The United States has been known as a place
The fact that the 1% global elite owns 48% of the world wealth, is an issue which should no longer be ignored. It is a problem that everyone knows is prevalent, but still people are ignorant to its intricacies. Surfing through the internet I found an article composed of edited research gathered by Oxfam, an international organization who battles global poverty. Its main point was, that America has been suffering from extreme inequality. The problem has corrupted the government and stunted economic growth. There are only a handful of people holding onto the wealth through gaining political power. This power allows them to escape paying the proper taxes, and hoard their wealth. Oxfam revealed that, extreme wealth has been able to be passed
Did you know that there is no equality in some countries such as India, Somalia, and Haiti? In these countries, kids don’t have the right to be educated, rich people are favored, and in some cases only rich men are treated lavishly. This is no problem for the people of America because we have the gift of equality. This is America’s gift to my generation. Equality.
This is an microeconomic issue because it affects each individual by limiting their total welfare and opportunity for life improvement. Inequality in itself isn’t the problem it is the overwhelming level of inequality that is limiting the potential well being of the average American citizen. However, there is an argument that inequality isn’t all bad because it is just a byproduct of a thriving free market which naturally improves living standards for the general population. There is also an argument that when equity is forced upon society it limits the right to pursue happiness by limiting the potential spoils of our endeavors. This is thought to limit economic growth by discourages entrepreneurship. Very valid points if we were discussing
John Sloan once said, “I feel that if five thousand people in this city are wealthy and content and two million are unhappy, something is wrong.” Citizens it todays society are either wealthy or poor, there is no in between. The social gap between the upper-class and the rest of society is too large. Lower-class citizens, including children, have to work very hard to try and make ends meet; many times, women will have to join the workforce. The wealthy live a very comfortable life, while the lower-class and hard working citizens struggle with daily life and providing for their families. The same goes for the immigrants; they are no better off than the lower class. They were unwanted and got the worst end of the deal. This big gap between the
The belief that the United States of America practices democracy and capitalism has become a lie. Through the past century, as the United States political landscape transformed into a plutocracy blindly led by an oligarchy the national wealth gap is now significantly disproportionate in favor of the wealthy minority, thus causing social problems. Acclaimed father of capitalism, Adam Smith, published a book on this four months before the American Declaration of Independence was signed. In this book, he stated necessities of keeping the common good in mind for self interest, general public trust in the justice system, the danger of monopolies, and their role in the dissipation of capitalism. In the early 1990’s, there had been laws in place to
Not many people realize, but there are many social inequalities shaping our everyday lives. Sexual orientation discrimination discriminates against transgender and homosexual people, and many people in America are affected by it. Whether someone is transgender, gay, or a lesbian, they are looked upon as an oddball or a freak. It is important to bring awareness to the topic of social inequality and persecution, especially sexual orientation discrimination, because various genres of literature can be used to help change society's views of tolerance and acceptance, it impacts teenagers in modern America, and affects readers when learning about social inequality.
Social inequality in the United States is not only evident but increasing, as the disparities between those in higher class versus those in poverty are noticeable in the daily lives of both groups and their subsequent offspring. Those in poverty struggle to survive while those in upper classes not only have enough for their wants and needs, but can provide the proper upbringing and opportunities for their children to remain in the upper class as well. These differences are caused by economic, cultural, and political factors that foster inequality. Economic factors that work as hindrances to one’s life and future are more common for those in lower classes. Cultural factors affect how one is looked at by others and this in turn can have influence over opportunities and networking. Additionally many of those in the lower echelons of society lack the political power to improve their situation due to barriers and lack of adequate public policy. Overall, social life for those in higher social class positions is easier in a variety of aspects because obstacles that many of those in poverty face are not an issue for those in the upper class, which causes social life for those in higher classes versus lower classes to not only be easier, but make social mobility more attainable. This difference is due to a myriad of economic, cultural, and political differences that sustain inequality in society.
Ever since this nation was declared, the societies within the United States have suffered inequities based on their race, gender, culture, beliefs and economic status. Despite all the struggles that Americans went through to improve situations, the repetition of oppression and destructions of common beliefs had been plausible within the United States. As long as these negative factors remain in America, a society with social classes will always be counterproductive in economic development.
Social inequality is a significant central theme America has always dealt with since the Reconstruction era. Three particular eras American faced proved social inequality to be a major struggle some citizens had to deal with in everyday life: Industrialization and Urbanization Era, New South Era, and the Civil Rights Era. Although minorities and inferior races, genders, and religious beliefs were looked down upon and treated terribly, the citizens belonging to those inferior groups kept fighting for their own feeling of equality and freedom.
“Social Inequality is characterized by the existence of unequal opportunities and rewards for different social positions or statuses within a group or society. It contains structured and recurrent patterns of unequal distributions of goods, wealth, opportunities, rewards, and punishments. Racism, for example, is understood to be a phenomenon whereby access to rights and resources is unfairly distributed across racial lines” (CollegeMagazine: 2017). In the U.S many ethnic minorities encounter discrimination, which benefits white people by "conferring on them white privilege", it allows them better access to rights and assets than many other Americans.
