The dark never sleeps at night When night comes, dark comes. Throughout Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, dark actions have been committed repeatedly at night. All the evil incidents that have happened in the novel, namely, the night Mr. Enfield met Mr. Hyde for the first time when he was trampling over a girl, the night of Carew’s murder incident, the night that shocked Mr. Lanyon to his further death, and the last might of Dr. Jekyll’s life, all was done by Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde does not sleep at night. Dr. Jekyll tries to keep his original form in the day and, if possible, transforms to be Mr. Hyde only at night. Due to the fact that the day is Dr. Jekyll’s time, time for his honourable career, Mr. Hyde should not have emerged in the midday. On the other hand, Hyde is allowed to have done dark actions at night, because, at night, it’s time for people to sleep, it’s time when people mostly down their guard. In other words, it’s time when one’s subconscious is released, perhaps by dreams. One step beyond us, Dr. Jekyll releases his subconscious through his another appearance, Mr. Hyde. All the dark actions are done by him, Dr. Jekyll’s subconscious form. …show more content…

Jekyll and for Mr. Hyde. To make it clearer, it is Stevenson’s tool of how to separate them in term of using time. Day for Jekyll and Night for Hyde. Anyway, the problem of differentiating time of these two characters might be that even dark actions in the story happens at night, good or normal actions are not restricted to happen only in day time. Dr. Jekyll organised his night party as well. Honourable Dr. Jekyll can live in day and night. The use of time supports the idea where Jekyll mention that Hyde is pure evil but he is normal people like all human being, mixed out of good and evil
