Sports are a key factor to college life. Even though everyone may not play them, it plays a major impact on every individual that attends that college. Sports teams help build school pride, generate revenue, and give rising athletes opportunities to become professionals. As a result, colleges should strongly support their sports teams.
First and foremost, sports teams are essential in establishing a sense of school pride. A strong stance of school pride allows the student body as a whole to become coherent. To put simply, it creates a way for students to become better involved with their college. Not only does it generate involvement within the college, but also with the community because of family or friends that may also attend the events.
College sports also known as the greatest source of entertainment known to man this era. There are several types of sports ranging from non- physical to the most physical contact sports. Each sport takes sacrifice and dedication to be able to perform at your best knows matter what level. The NCAA is a million dollar business that lets student athletes show their athletic ability and skill toward other individuals. That is the main reason for the creation of collegiate sports, but not to downside the meaning of entertainment. Controversy of paying these athletes is a big deal at the moment. There have been many scandals of athletes receiving direct pay under the table that is not included in their financial aid or scholarship. Paying the
The NCAA believes “that a student-athlete is a student first and athlete second.” Student-athletes benefit more than from playing a sport that they love. The graduation rate is higher among the student athletes than the general student body. “NCAA studies show that student-athletes enjoy high levels of engagement in academics, athletics and community: have positive feeling about their overall athletics and academic experiences: attribute invaluable life skills to being a student-athlete: and are more likely to earn similar or higher wages after college than non-student athletes.”
Athletics are a big attraction to many students when looking at colleges. When college sports programs have success, research done by Pope and Pope show that there is a boost in applications that the colleges receive from students. “Applications [after] a Championship add 7-8 percent, with a big effect in the immediate year and little effect after one year.” It was found that when colleges have winning athletic teams get more applications sent in from all levels of student and not just athletes. This is found true for basketball and football. Not only increase in applications is found but also found after success in football there is a growth in enrollment, this is not found true for basketball (Getz and Siegfried “What Does Intercollegiate Athletics Do…”). “David Schmidly the president of the University of New Mexico said “One of the most effective ways to market your university nationally is to have a really quality athletic program. It helps recruit faculty, students, and donors. It helps with the image of the whole university.” (qtd. in Getz and Siegfried “College Sports: The Mystery of the Zero-Sum Game.”)
The impact of college athletic programs on academics has always been a controversial and contentious topic. It seems that athletic programs have some contemplative effects on academics of colleges and universities. Different people have different ideas about how college athletic programs should be carried on. College presidents, administrations, student athletes, parents of students, and athletic trainers are along with these people who point out different facts about the fallouts of athletics on academics. A bunch of people suggest that athletic programs should be dropped from college system, while another group suggests that athletic programs should be taken care with more advertence. The success of a sport in the college level can create a supportive alumni base also. When a team becomes successful and stays successful, the alumni donates money and stays connected with their alma mater. On the flip side of that, if a team is not as successful and does not produce as much, the alumni does not have a good showing at the games and the donations decline.
For 150 years, college sports have been an important aspect of American universities and abolishing them would eliminate the benefits that they bring (“College Athletics Programs”). One of the greatest benefits of college athletics is that they bind the school to the community. People who live in a college town love to support their institution and showing up at numerous athletic events displays how far their dedication goes. Not only do college sports attract people who live in the college town, but also alumni and future students. The school’s spirit and unity extends far beyond the
College athletes are known more because of their sports rather than what they are actually majoring in. College athletes put in immense effort and time towards the sport. They make the sport their main priority and manage their lives primarily around the team and sport they are playing. Many college athletes, especially basketball and football players are recruited to become a part of college level team. The athletes decide what college to go to by evaluating the prestige of the sports programs rather than the college itself. For many college athletes is a platform to play the sport they are passionate about. In addition to their passion for the sport, college athletes also put in effort and time towards their respective sports.
Athletics have always been a big part of the college experience. College recruiters travel all over the country to get the best athletes for their schools. It is any athletes dream to play college sports. Often times students dedicate their lives putting in the hard work and training that is required to get to the college level. Their time and dedication is often paid off with the chance to play sports in college.
For example, by competing in collegiate athletics, one better learns how to work with a team in order to achieve a common goal. This is a valuable skill that is necessary in the work force, as well as many other aspects of life. Also, college sports teach discipline, time management, and provide student athletes with great tools, such as tutors, in order to help achieve their academic potential.
College athletic programs should be kept as an important part of the athlete’s academic schedule, and student athletes are considered an important part the student body. Every university or community college’s admissions and scholastic excellence for student-athletes should be planned to encourage educational success and
Athletes in college receives a lot of attention, through their practices and performance on and off the field.be. They uplift the names of their colleges and give it a name that would otherwise not be acquired. They make their college mates proud of their college, and they may boost enrolment of many others, which would benefit the school. Athletics stand a position to earn a school other benefits, not only to the players but other students too. They may win study scholarships for their school mates by their exemplary performance (Owens et al 20).
They help bring the school's reputation up from winning games and winning championships. This will help bring the school money and trophies. Since the athletes are helping the school making
Sports play a huge role in our lives. Everyone enjoys a sport in their own different ways: some do sports and others are just happy to watch it. Giving students opportunity to be part of sports in college will definitely have positive sides on college as well as on students. As an example, we can see how top colleges like Harvard or Stanford recruit young athletes. At the end, those athletes are making names for the schools. However, in our college situation is totally different. Even if we have established sports, they are not aimed to improve our college. However, we can reconstruct athletics of our school, and it will positively affect students, college, and it's budget.
They are held to a higher academic standard, resulting in higher grades (Logos). In most cases, if a student does not meet the grade requirement, they are not allowed to participate. This motivates students do not care as much about academics to work harder and get better grades. Schools that have strong athletic programs also have higher test scores. Participating in sports can help students find a place where they fit in It has been proven that student athletes have higher self-esteem, which leads to higher academic achievement. Sports are a great way to burn off steam and relieve stress after a long day of school. Not to mention, involvement in sports is a great way to make long lasting friendships and it makes school more enjoyable. Athletes are more involved in school activities and in the community. This helps bring the community together. Sports enrich and contribute to education.
Students learn about the importance of sports and how it has a positive effect in their lives. Sports also help teach children about teamwork and sportsmanship and how it will help them in the future. Although some people might argue that sports are making children stressed out and distracting them from learning, it actually helps raise their grades and help them become more focused. Paying high school sports not only allows students to handle pressure, but to also gain leadership
