Suburban America: Update the Vision for a Sustainable Future
We are constantly being presented media as advertisements, television shows, movies which have a backdrop of the typical American suburban neighborhood, complete with built-in set of residents which are homogenized to a perceived norm in an effort to make the media’s message more appealing. However, I live in a typical American suburban neighborhood which was built in the 1950s, and when I survey my neighbors they fail to fit any stereotype leading me to believe that the stereotype is no longer valid. The viewers were given an overview of the existing issues and shown some examples of projects aimed at solving these issues in various cities across America. One issue profiled was the change in ethnic composition of suburban residents which was discussed as visits to Muslim-American, Latino and Asian-American communities took place. Showing various aspects of these communities in real time and comparing them to the beliefs about these same communities which were clearly untrue or changed has made the case for why suburban developments as intended are not a sustainable plan going forward. That set the stage for the final message as the need to revise the vision for new development and redevelopment with an emphasis on defining a sustainable vision which is both economically viable and incorporates the changes witnessed since the developments were built. The examples focused on the ethnicity of the residents in order to dispel old beliefs such as how the suburbs were populated with various “Cleaver” type families, stereotype. In addition, it brought the importance of the political and economic agendas the ability to align their goals as necessary to produce a successful model. The promotion and creation of sustainable redevelopment using Long Island as the showcase first American modern suburb in illustration. The film sporadically jumped to the 2008 Presidential election and an important local election which were expected to significantly help or hinder the film’s agenda of creating a sustainable vision, which I found distracting. Other places besides Long Island used in the film for example projects were Arlington, Chicago, Reston, Cleveland, Minneapolis, and Orange
