Summary: Understanding Health Care Economics

The articles I chose for my annotated bibliography were about healthcare cost and quality. The theme in many of these articles was about healthcare cost and does it affect patients experience. In some settings like hospitals, the cost of quality affects patient experience. The largest component of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product goes to healthcare spending (17% in 2009), and yet the quality is unsatisfactory. It was also interesting to find out that more people die each year in the United States from medical errors than from highway accidents, breast cancer, or AIDS (National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine, 2002).

You have been asked by a health care magazine to write a series of articles focusing on health care financial concepts. The articles will be included in five consecutive issues and will be geared towards readers with little knowledge of finance. You must ensure that the articles are both informative and engaging to your audience. You must also ensure that your articles relate financial principles to the health care industry.

I really enjoyed this article, as it went into effective financial planning. The 2 major categories of cost are total charges (the patient's bill) and the cost of providing services. These 2 costs can be defined mathematically in the following indices: average revenue per patient day and the cost per patient day.

The health care system in the United States is known for being one of the most costly systems in the world. In 2010 the Affordable Care Act, (ACA) was implemented with the hopes of reshaping the system and decreasing the healthcare cost, (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, O’Grady, 2016). . Somewhere along the way our country made healthcare a business. Understandings our country healthcare finances can be quit complex. In order to be successful the Chief Nursing Officer, (CNO), business owners and directors must understand the business principles. These individuals are placed in leadership role and therefore must have the characteristics of a leader, (Huber, 2014)

When contemplating health care policy changes, several economic issues in health care must be considered. These include the financial issues affecting the health sector and have an impact on health policies. Policy makers face unending challenges due to the health sector revenues that are always rising. Another challenge is decreased funding and failure of the health insurance services.

The main economic challenge for the healthcare system in the United State will be the rising expenses associated with Medicare and Medicaid. The Governments share of healthcare spending is predicted to rise to 31 percent by the year 2020 (Keehan, Sisko, Truffer, Poisal, Cuckler, Madison, Lizonitz, and Smith, 2011). This may jeopardize the economic stability and financial security of the nation.

There are many factors that have influenced the changes of health care economics. Money and technology has definitely been the reason for the change of health care economics over the years. Money is want makes the economy evolve. There will be advancement in technology and there needs to be people are managing these to keep up with the changes. The U.S. has definitely progressed as far as influencing factors to change in new advancement of technology and medical care. The future and direction of health care has been the topic of discussion amongst politician and U.S citizens today. There are several challenges surrounding the future and strategic direction in which health care should be heading. Accreditation, quality of health care and organization’s compliance; access to health care, maintaining a skilled workforce, information technology and pay for performance are some of the challenges that currently presenting itself in healthcare today. If health care is not dealt with appropriately it will have a significant effect an impact on the strategic direction in the future and direction of care.

Health economists are professionals who combine their knowledge of economics and the health care industry to analyze how health care resource are used and distributed. They focus on ways to better understand the health care system, improve health care policies and the quality of patient care.
