When I first read the question "who inspires you" I instantly thought about my family. I thought about my family because everyone has always pushed me to be better and achieve higher goals instead of just being mediocre. However, I also thought about two of my algebra teachers who pushed me to earn at least an 80 on my Algebra regents. After scoring a 68 on the exam on my third try I was ready to quit and just be happy that I made the state benchmark on the exam which is a 65. Although I was ready to quit I knew I would be letting a lot of people down which is why I decided to attend summer school and make another attempt at reaching my school benchmark which is an 80 and yet again I failed. However recently this past spring I began to apply
For my practicum, I went to Crossing Points on the University of Alabama campus in Garland Hall, room 308. I observed and helped with individualized tutoring on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:00am to 9:00am, and Thursdays at 12:30pm to 1:30pm from October 2nd through November 20th. My supervising teacher was Amy Williamson.
Below is a summary of the July 1 tutoring session. Let me know if you have any questions or comments.
The on-campus tutoring was another resource the team had used. The tutoring sessions turned out to be very helpful as sometimes when the professor wasn’t available, the tutors were there to guide us. Making sure we are on the right track and pulling us out from any problem we might have.
When looking into the field of summer learning loss (SLL) there isn’t much debate on if it exists, but there is slight variation in how to described it. In “Using Curriculum-Based Measurement to Examine Summer Learning Loss” SLL is explained as “an achievement gap among students based on family income, ethnicity, and home language that is present at the commencement of schooling and persists throughout all levels of education.” (Patton & Reschily, 2013). The notion that SLL is related to a student’s socioeconomic status (SES) is a concept that was accepted across the entire field. The definition provided by Patton and Reschily is similar to how SLL is expressed in “Summer Learning and its Implications.” In this journal,
For any upper-level students that may need some assistance or tutoring, you’ll love knowing that we have upper-level tutors that are specialist in all sorts of subjects, which means they can provide specific instruction to help
It’s time for summer, and every student is gone for two months. Many students enjoy summer, they don't have any schoolwork to do, and they can do what they want. Lately many teacher have realized that students over the summer can slip by an entire grade level in their literature. Brain drain is a common occurrence in many student loose knowledge in every subject. The loss of knowledge over the summer can be very harmful to many students.
Growing up as a migrant had prevented me from staying and taking classes during the summer. I had simply knowledge that it wasn't possible to stay so I had accepted it. However, I had came up with an idea that why I should limit myself to not learning during the summer, but to take textbooks of any subject and read and study it for fun. It has helped me, not to limit myself as learning is something you can do anywhere and
The Summer Learning Lab is a great opportunity for me to grow as a person and as a science student. It will show me technology and science I have never seen before and will also be a great program to help me explore my options to be able to decide what I would like to study in college. This program is a great opportunity for students like me that have the desire to study science, but do not have the resources necessary. The Summer Learning Lab will open new doors and adventures that I know will change my life and the way that I perceive things. Science is such a wonderful field and I can’t wait to explore it with The Summer Learning Lab.
My first year working as a 5th grade tutor through the Student Outreach & Academic Reinforcement Program in Morristown, NJ was an unforgettable experience. To match each student with a tutor, we played a series of bonding games before the first week of the program. During the first week of tutoring, I was paired with two students. As the weeks passed by, I soon found myself tutoring 3-4 students because they each wanted me as their tutor. My main goal was to not only aid my students in completing their homework but I challenged them intellectually. With every opportunity, I engaged my students in areas they’ve shown weakness. While aiding one student in reading, two students were working on math problems while another student was working on spelling. Another major goal was for me to assist them in passing the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJASK) test. The NJASK is a standardized test given to every student of New Jersey from grade 3 to 8 that are attending public schools. The week before my students took their test, I told them to stay calm and to not overthink while they are taking the test because they’ve prepared for it for months. After receiving
As a sophomore I began independently tutoring students at the middle school in my hometown, with hopes of increasing the success of individuals entering high school. It became obvious that simply tutoring students after they are failing is not nearly as effective as I would hope. In response, I created an early warning signs program. During this program, it was clear that there are several students with hopes of doing well in school that are set at a disadvantage due to their home lives.
The Summer Intensive Program In addition to improving academic skills, the program’s curriculum also focuses on career and professional growth, leadership development, and service-learning.
For students on-the-go, face-to-face tutoring sessions are available online using Varsity Tutors' dedicated platform. For lessons in-person, tutors are available based around your student’s schedule, giving them the freedom to learn in a structured environment without the pressure of a classroom. Tutors are hired on the condition that they are flexible, and are expected to keep their appointments without fail.
Winter break is a perfectly timed for students to enjoy the holidays, and take a much needed break from school. This offers time to spend with family and relax without having to worry about their studies. Due to the length, the break often leads to boredom near the end, and students can become restless and in need of some excitement.
We all know college is hard; if it were easy, everyone would have a degree and no one would ever ask for help. But here at Crafton Hills College, tutors are available to help out students in any way, so that those who struggle can do well and be successful. These mentors don’t just lecture, they take the time to make sure students understand and comprehend what is being taught. Tutors are at hand for a variety of subjects, some have appointments for one on one time and others are for use at one’s convenience. The best part is, students don’t have to search for a tutor, or post flyers saying “HELP NEEDED.” CHC has a Tutoring Center, completely free, which is easy to find and a
