Supplemental Childcare Program
Families' reliance on childcare has risen significantly over the past 30 years. In 1993, 9.9 million children under age 5, needed care while their mothers worked (Bureau of the Census, 1995). More than two-thirds of all infants receive nonparental child care during their first year of life, with most enrolled for about 30 hours each week (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, 1995).
There are many different programs in the United States that provide extended day childcare for working parents. Programs such as the 6 to 6, YMCA, etc are available in the morning before school and in the evening after school. Although these programs provide parents the much-needed care of their

The goal of this supplemental childcare would be to cut down on employee absenteeism, job stress, and health education for parents, prevention, and quality care for children.
Needs of the Agency . The daycare and child development business is booming and profits are soaring. With more people looking at the child care field from different angles, these type of programs have more opportunities for more allies and partners, for funding and positive public relations, for improving, and “professionalizing” the programs that we offer to our children in our communities. Non-profit groups and higher education have increasingly partnered with schools, often including after-school hours.
There have already been so many agencies, such as Harmonium Inc., that have stepped up to the plate to support child care programs such as the 6 to 6, that gaining support from other agencies, as well as big business, would not be a great challenge.
Research
Many businesses pride themselves on productivity. They promise to deliver a high quality product with expediency and efficiency. But how will all this be accomplished, if many employees are out, taking care of their sick children? How will the product be delivered? The Aftercare Program has welcomed 4 new families and 15 children. Monthly follow-ups have ensued and goals modified to ensure that all efforts are being made to address potential hardships that could alter the family untis’ sustainability. Problem solving strategies have included:
Some families are not able to provide childcare when they need it for their kid(s). “The cost and the scarcity of day care have helped create what sociologist Joya Misra calls “the motherhood penalty”” (Quart). Some families have to have only one income so that one parent could stay home to watch the kid(s). Single parents have to move in with their parents for help because they can not afford the care. People should not have to quit their jobs to take care of their kids when there are multiple daycare facilities.

The Kaiser Child Care Centers were established during the World War II by the Kaiser company for their female workers and were operated 24 hours a day. The Kaiser Company built these facilities in the shipyards so that the working mothers wouldn’t have to worry about the safety of their children and would be motivated to work more. Not only did these centers provide care for the children, they also provided the children with medical attention, and hot meals. We currently have centers like these now. Most centers now a days take care of children day-to-day so their parents can go to work and sustain their families without having to worry about their safety and well-being. An increase in baby booming makes it tougher for working parents to find daycare. The facts prove that having children come with a true price. Even so it doesn’t change the issues of finding child care or makes them go away. When parents work, quality child care is a necessity. And it does not come cheap. The purpose of this research is to explore the benefits of onsite childcare for big corporations. More specifically answering the questions of “What is cost effective for business owners to provide onsite childcare?” and “Will providing childcare for working parents alleviate their stress; and increase productivity on their job?” The review of this literature will discuss the stress of childcare on working parents; the advantages and disadvantages of onsite childcare; the benefits of corporations providing onsite child care. The research methods that would be conducive to complete this research would be surveys and separate focus groups between employees and their employers. On-Site daycares would also be more time efficient for employees as they and their children will be going to one destination, opposed to travelling a further distance to drop of their kids before arriving at work. Dually this also compliments time effectiveness because employees can work later hours without the inconvenience of having to leave early to retrieve their child from a further daycare facility. In cases such as illness for the child, it also saves time for the company and the worker for the employee to be able to take their child from work to a hospital or other destination without the extra travelling.
The costs of this expansion will mostly go toward labor, as labor is the single largest component of costs for early infant and toddler care centers (Marshall et al., 2004). For teachers to stay invested in the children they teach and care for, they must be fairly compensated to maintain the high quality of care. According to a study in Massachusetts, 72 percent of typical full-time, full-year center expenditures go toward labor (Marshall, et al., 2004). In dollar amounts, “average expenditures per child care hour were $4.42 for centers serving infants and $4.28 for centers serving toddlers. These correspond to full-time care expenditures of $10,343 and $10,015 for the two groups of centers [infants and toddlers, respectively]”
As an employee, I would like to institute an in-house day-care center. Employees feel an in-house day-care center would be beneficial to the company. Currently, employees spend more time dropping off and picking up children than doing their job. Employees collectively have a total of 18 preschool children and their families continue to grow. The purpose of this memo is to propose an in-house day-care center. In order to gain approval for an in-house day-care center, consider the following: 1) benefits, 2) regulations, 3) requirements, 4) finances, 5) tasks and 6) exposure.
It is common knowledge that a parent is considered the most efficient caregiver for their children. It’s also known that with daily responsibilities of caring for a child financially, parents partake in full-time and/or part-time employment. It is when they will begin to meet the friends that they will grow up with as they go through grade school. While there are some caregiver’s that are only in the human service field to earn a paycheck and with the lack of parental involvement in their child’s life, it can make a caregiver’s job more challenging. Daycare centers serve as a stepping stone for a child’s future that will teach them how to establish appropriate skills and aid in the development of their cognitive abilities. Positive child interactions not only aid in the development of social and cognitive development, but also in the child’s self-esteem and it lets them know they are important and loved.
