Target Behavior Project

Decent Essays

For my project, I have sampled the population of RedCard users at Target. I chose to do this because I work at Target, so the data is easily accessible, and I thought it would be interesting to test something that I see every day. To collect my data, I made a tally mark for every transaction that was completed with a RedCard; there was only one instance where a single person made two transactions with the same card. Because of the way I counted transactions, she appears as two data points on my report. For every transaction that was completed with a RedCard, I wrote down the individual’s ethnicity, gender, and whether or not they had kids with them. Keep in mind that ethnicity was recorded to the best of my ability and may not be entirely …show more content…

The largest amount of data in this sample belongs to Caucasian individuals, containing 4.3% men and 95.7% women. Of the men, 50% had children and 50% did not; of the women, 29% had children and 71% did not. If we examine the overall proportion of gender, it is obvious that the majority is female – exactly 94%. As for children or absence thereof, 70% of RedCard users did not have children with them. Between the three categories that were notated, Caucasian women without children were the most prevalent; making up 67% of the sample; you can also see, in the above graphs, the percentages of each category. For the measure of central tendency in this sample, I have chosen to use the mode. This gives the same result presented in the summary above, both for each category and for all overlapping categories. The mode for ethnicity is Caucasian; for gender is female; and for children is a lack thereof. To calculate variation, I also used the Index of Qualitative Variation (IQV), which measures the percentage of difference between categories relative to the maximum possible differences. For example, when I used the IQV on my “Ethnicity” data points, I ended with a value of 20%. This means that 20% of the maximum possible differences for that category have been employed. The higher the value, the more diversity
