Tattoos and Body Piercings In today’s society teenagers and young adults are getting tattoos and piercings, but are they thinking about their future. Although teens and young adults are looking to “be cool”, is it worth the consequences that it may bring as far as a career or deeper religious insights. In my opinion, getting a tattoo or body piercing is up to the person receiving them. Although the person has the final say as to what goes on their body, they should keep in mind that they should be hidden at any given time. Physical appearance is the first thing most employers look at to determine if an individual is the right for the job. A tattoo or piercing should be in a place that can be covered up or hidden by clothes. If a person is working in the medical field, piercings and tattoos should be taken out or covered, as co-workers, patients, and patient families will see the tattoo or piercing and judge them based on their appearance. “Dr. Draion M Burch, an attending obstetrician and gynecologist in Pittsburgh, stresses that physicians should present themselves in a way that makes patients feel comfortable and respectful of their expertise and authority. He often asks medical students and residents to cover tattoos and remove piercings. “The most outrageous example I’ve seen was a medical student whose neck is tattooed with his girlfriend’s name,” says Dr. Burch.” Many people stereotype those with tattoos and piercings as tough, rough or uncaring, and if their job is to take care of the sick or wounded, that is not what they would want people to think of them. If their choice is the culinary arts, tattoos and piercings can pose a problem. From my past experience, fast food restaurants, there are to be absolutely no visible tattoos or no piercings while working around food.
