When I visited the Phat Da Buddhist Congregation in San Diego, a Vietnamese Buddhist temple in San Diego, I was taken by surprise that the service was given in Vietnamese. The decorations on the wall, the sacred images displayed at the altar, and the vibrant color of the monk’s robe were still familiar, but what was being said was (very) foreign to me. I quickly became impatient and preoccupied with the question on why I was there in the first place. What would I write about for my final Buddhism assignment if I could not understand what was being said? One thing was clear, the day I visited, they were celebrating Buddha’s birthday with huge display of rituals and ceremony, and a big birthday cake at the end.

Ultimate Thai nugs are tied to the sticks using stringy fibers pulled from the cannabis plant itself. After being secured, these nugs are often dipped in hash oil for added potency. Ultimate Thai cannabis strain has a sweet tropical flavor accented by a pungent skunky exhale that’s just a little spicy. The aroma is sweet and floral with a fruity effect that quickly takes a spicy pungent turn as the nugs are burned.

In the Buddhist religion there are many concepts that make it interesting to the world. Throughout the many practices that Buddhism contains are strings of knowledge that can only expand the world’s view on it. Some of the notions that Buddhism stresses are merit, rebirth, social status, and power. Each of these notions connects crucial points in one another as well as ritual practices that Buddhists abide by in order to be on the path to enlightenment. Such practices include the Kathina Ceremony that focuses on merit and the story of Prince Vessantara that focuses on generosity in relation to rebirth and merit. Also the consecration ceremony of the Buddha’s image which focuses on power, and social status which is explained by Burmese Buddhist
When arriving to the Buddhist temple, it is not surprising for one to say that this temple looks like an ordinary house from the outside. However, one can tell that they were Buddhist because they had a gazebo looking stupa on the left side of the front yard, which contain the remaining’s of Buddha’s teeth. On the right side of the yard, they had a replica of the Bodhi tree that represented the lifetime of when Buddha achieved enlightenment. As one took off her/his shoes, the house was transformed into a magnificent place where anyone could come to chant, offer puja, and the meditation of the dharma.

As a result of my curiosity, I visited a Buddhist temple in Des Plaines, IL, so that I can observe all the intricacies of the practice during the service. The specific temple I went to is named ‘Phat Bao Temple’, a temple that practices the Mahayana sect of Buddhism, one of the three sects of Buddhism. The Phat Bao Temple is Vietnamese temple engaged in the Mahayana branch, which is typical of Vietnamese temples due to Mahayana having a strong presence in Vietnam.
In the United States there are over four million buddhists, one thousand temples, study groups, or Buddhists associations (Monroe 108). This number has come from just one man searching to find happiness and eventually enlightenment. Buddha’s story is how buddhism became a religion all over the world. It teaches a peaceful manner, reveals the key to happiness for the mind, and eliminates the desire in life. Not just the history of buddhism is important, but how it has spread through the world and what it looks like today.
Vesak is the most sacred holiday to millions of Buddhists around the world, and the most important day celebrated by Theravada Buddhists (United Nations). It commemorates the birth of Siddhartha Guantama, his enlightenment that occurred at the age of 35 that granted him as the Buddha, as well as his parinirvana and final passing at the age of 80 (Dhammadharo and Bikkhua). Each of these events was said to take place on a full moon of the Hindu lunar month, Vesakha, where the name of the day originates from (BBC). Due to this conclusion from the Buddhist scriptures it was founded, it designates when the holiday will be celebrated; the day of the full moon. Improving the value of exports is the primary goal of Thailand’s international trade policy. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Community (AEC) was established as an effective cooperative strategy for gaining market advantages through regional market integration. Thailand aims to capitalize on trade agreements by networking and entering partnership with neighboring countries. Currently, Thailand’s cross-border trade in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) plays a crucial role in globalization, because it facilitates rapid and convenient trade and investment. Countries seek new export markets to disperse the risk of domestic market concentration, as evidenced by the economic recessions affecting
When my family first arrived in the dirty city of Bangkok, one of the first things my little sister asked me was “Why are there so many dogs everywhere?” Being the dog lover that she is, she was extremely disappointed to learn that these dogs were not only nobody’s pets, but that she also couldn’t pet them unless she wanted to get some weird fungus or sickness on the first couple days of her vacation. As I explained to them that the reason for all the dogs was because Thailand is mainly Buddhist and it is not in their fashion to kill these dogs, they still had a hard time accepting this fact seeing how miserable many of them look. I didn’t really feel like getting into the deeper reasons at the time mainly because they knew nothing about Buddhism and they had so many other questions about the wild city of Bangkok, so I just left the explanation at a “I know, it’s really sad.” What I didn’t further explain to them was that the main reasons for the allowance of these dogs was that it is against the first precept to harm them, as well as the basic idea of karma. Although Buddhism saves and protects many animals, it is also the reason millions of animals are suffering in Thailand as well as causing many ecological problems.
