On December 23, 1897, Sarah Breedlove who is now known as Madam CJ Walker, was born on a delta on a Louisiana Plantation where her parents, Owen and Minerva Anderson Breedlove worked and were enslaved prior to the civil war. Although she was the first child of her siblings to be born after the abolition of slavery, she faced just as many hard times. Walker was however able to renovate herself from an illiterate laundress and farm girl to a highly successful business women. What truly makes a great leader? Someone with concern for others, leadership in the most direst of situations, determination in battle, and remarkable achievements. Alexander III had all of these traits to be classified as a great leader. The mark he made was one of determination that led him to expand his empire over 3,000 miles in only fifteen years. Alexander was great because of his remarkable achievements, extraordinary concern for others, and unmatchable determination.

Before defining an individual as a great leader, one must first understand the definition of leadership and the qualities that make a leader. According to businessdictionary.com, “leadership involves establishing a clear vision, sharing that vision with others so that they will follow willingly, providing the information, knowledge and methods to realize that vision, and coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests of all members and stakeholders.” The website goes on to say that “a leader is the one who steps up in times of crisis, and is able to think and act creatively in difficult situations. Unlike management, leadership cannot be taught, although it may be learned and enhanced through coaching or mentoring” (Leadership).

We all hope to have, and understand, the characteristics that an amazing leader possesses. There are many great leaders, spread throughout our history. Malcolm X, George Washington, and Martin Luther King Jr. are just a few people who were blessed with what it takes to step up and become true leaders. By example, some of the other fantastic qualities of leadership also make up two remarkable people: Nelson Mandela and Suleiman the Magnificent. They exhibited many leadership-like characteristics, like them being feared yet admired by their people, or people from other countries, or the fact that they were also very intelligent, and tactical.

Madame C.J. Walker was born on December 23, 1867 in Delta, Louisiana and was named Sarah Bredlove. Her parents were Owen and Mernirva Bredlove. She was the youngest of six kids and was the first one born into freedom, after the Emancipation Proclamation. Her parents and siblings were all slaves owned by Robert W. Burney at the Madison Parish plantation. Her mother died in 1878 of cholera which is bacterial disease. Her father re-married and left Sarah to be an orphan at the age of seven and had to live with her older sister. At the age of fourteen she married a man named Moses McWilliams. When she turned twenty her husband died, but they had a daughter named Leila McWilliams.

Confidence is another trait a leader should possess. Both Odysseus in The Odyssey and David in the Books of Samuel demonstrate this quality. They have belief in their abilities to meet most challenges that come their way. Odysseus never believes a person initially, being it mortal or immortal. He always likes to be done in his way. Odysseus believes in himself rather than anybody else. He wants to figure what to do for himself and not someone else do it for him. For instance, he argues with Calypso and Ino because Odysseus did not believe them initially, but wanted things to be done his way (Book 5, line 180 & line 370). Moreover, David, another God-chosen King of Israelites, shows confidence when he tells Saul that though he (David) is young, he can fight the giant Philistine warrior, Goliath (1Samuel 17:32-37). However, David confidence is from the fact that God is on his side and will not let him down.

However, C.J Walker was very different as she did not rely on her husband, but rather creating her own business becoming the first self-made African-American millionaire. She was born into a family of former slaves, who did not have enough money to send any of the children to school. In 1887 her husband Moses was killed in a lynch mob, the reason was because he was black. So, Madam CJ Walker had to raise their 2-year-old daughter alone. At that time, it was hard to find a job to support her daughter, who she wanted to attend school and have a better life than she did. Sarah Breedlove (Madam CJ Walker) did the unthinkable and became the first self-made female millionaires, during a time when women could not vote and African Americans were legally discriminated against in America. Madam CJ Walker survived countless boundaries which included being orphaned at seven, widowhood by age twenty, bad marriages, being a single parent, institutional racism, Jim Crow era, and low wages. How did Madam Walker achieve this incredible feat, facing such dire odds, and challenges in a time where she was thought of as less than a person? Someone is not born with greatness, they are destined with greatness. Achieving greatness in leadership may be hard to maintain, keeping it and being known for your greatness is even harder to accomplish. Greatness can be achieved through military victories, being appointed a high officer, known as a political figure and considering the lower-class citizens. Many leaders strive to reach being one of the people’s greatest leaders, but many fail. However, there is one in particular who was capable of achieving the position of being known as ‘one of the people’s greatest leaders’. No one can get success without having the trust of people on his capabilities because without that he won’t be able to gain enough confidence to take desired actions without the fear of being rejected.
