The American Civil War started in 1861 and ended in 1865. The two sides of the war are the Union (North) and Confederacy (South). The South wanted to keep slavery to maintain their economy and they worried that the North would end slavery. The South then seceded, starting the conflict. Around 620,000 people died in the war. Both sides of the war had advantages and disadvantages in the Civil War. Population in the South was small because it was based around farming communities, putting them at a disadvantage because they had fewer people to make up their army. The civil war was the greatest and deadliest battle in U.S. history, thousands of men died of the battle, diseases, and prison camps. Slavery literally split the nation into two (the north and the south) the civil war was an imminent war that was going to happen anyways. The 16th president Abraham Lincoln was also what caused the civil war because he wanted to end slavery as a whole and the south disagreed with him.

In 1861 two armies went head to head. One had the best military leaders while another had a massive amount of soldiers. The Union and the Confederate armies were brawling over slavery. During the Civil War soldiers were involved in a lot of combat, so when battles broke out, there was much blood shed and death. Gettysburg, the biggest and bloodiest battle of the Civil War, persisted a total of three days, leaving approximately 7,000 Americans dead and 30,000 wounded. The Confederate leaders weren't very successful commanding at Gettysburg, that's what lead to the loss. One leader, Richard Ewell, was indecisive, and slow to act because he hesitated to attack the Union Army on Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg.

The civil war mainly started because of conflicts between the free states and the slaves states. People did not want slaves in territories that were not yet states. In the election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the presidency. He wanted slavery out of territories. As a result, the south seceded to form the Confederate states of America. The Civil War brought the United States down to its knees. This blood-soaked conflict became one of the most brutal wars that this country has taken arms to and the destruction from the result of the war validates this view. Thus a period coined as Reconstruction started where the main objectives of the national government were to rebuild the southern confederate states and to protect the rights of the newly freed slaves. Anthony, used race and gender in the United States to shape and limit what it means to be a citizen with alleged “privileges and immunities.”
