The attack on Pearl Harbour, which occurred on the 7th of December 1941, held great significance during World War Two. The destroying of the United Sates naval base and the horrific aggression shown by the Japanese changed not only many American opinions, but the whole of World War Two. Pearl Harbour is an incredibly symbolic event that is still remembered with honour annually. The attack on Pearl Harbour virtually altered the entire outcome of the Second World War, resulting in United States defeat over the Japanese.
Pearl Harbour is a lagoon harbour on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Much of the harbour and surrounding lands is a United States Navy deep-water naval base and the headquarters of the Unites States Pacific Fleet. This is why the Japanese chose such location to attack on, as it was home to a substantial amount of the U.S power and it was virtually half way between Japan and the United States. Prior to the attack on Pearl Harbour, on the 7th of December 1941, the Japanese had been planning this event for various reasons. The Japanese and the Americans had an on-going rivalry in the pacific that was only getting more extreme. Japan’s imperial drive had been evident ever since 1931, when they invaded Manchuria. In July 1941 Japan invaded French Indochina and Roosevelt continued to avoid direct confrontation as he didn’t want to get involved.
