The Bluest Eye is a novel about an unwanted, unloved, and unappreciated little girl. Pecola is preyed upon by white shop owners, black mothers, and children in her own social class. Additionally, Pecola is not able to turn to her parents for support, as they have emotionally abandoned her long ago. Instead of loving his daughter, Cholly killed his ability to think about his own oppression with copious amounts of alcohol. Similarly, Pauline retreated to a world in which people appreciated her, something she had never experienced herself, and something she neglected to bestow upon her children. However, the extent of trauma is influenced by three factors: intensity, ability to respond, and long lasting effects (Vickroy 1). While there are certainly events that can have high intensity, leaving the subject no ability to respond, and leaving long lasting effects, additive trauma can come from multiple smaller events. Trauma can be either one single, extremely dramatic event or a multitude of micro-aggressions (Vickroy 1). Geraldine was extremely conscious of her own blackness, despite how hard she tried to avoid that fact. Because Geraldine was uncomfortable in her own skin, she was quick to anger and frustration when faced with a powerless girl, as she had once been. Pecola represented Geraldine’s own weakness, something she was unable to face and come to terms with. Because of this, Geraldine exercised what power she did have in order to oppress Pecola further. Geraldine shows us that those that are the most uncomfortable with themselves are also those that are most likely to participate in oppression and subjugation of any that they are more powerful than. The reason that people feel the need to act with any oppressive attitudes is that they are not confident enough, and need to put others down in order to life themselves
