The Board of Education dates back to 1842. According to the New York City Department of Records, the Board of Education was known as the Board of Education of the City of Brooklyn from 1853 – 1897 (www.nyc.gov). During that time period, records documented educational policy, and school system administration. The Board of Education underwent several transformations. Although the school system as stated by the Department of Records (www.nyc.gov) was known as the Board of Education of the city of Brooklyn, there were also boards in the borough of Manhattan, Bronx, Queens and Richmond.

The Board of Education was under Chancellor, Harvey Scribner, who started the process of working out the responsibilities of the central board, community districts, teachers, along with parents and students. Chancellors served to monitor the workings of the board members and the 32 districts. However, in 2002 the New York City Board of Education went under mayoral control and became the New York City Department of Education. The City of New York and the appointed chancellor controls all public schools in the five boroughs. The Mayor Controls the Department of Education. There are many different types of governors such as parent governors, staff governors, community governors, authority governors, foundation governors, partnership governors and sponsor governors which all play a part in making schools successful.

Public education primarily falls upon the state and local government to take charge of, which get divided up into local school districts that are managed by school boards. California has followed the steps of many American states by committing its efforts on ensuring educational developments through improved governance systems. In the last half a decade or so, there have emerged diverse levels of studies in California State majorly because of three reasons which include several legislative practices, institutions, and participation of state agencies. The California Educational Commission was created as early as 1899 with a number of 70 members to study the state’s educational program with an effort of improving it. Of much interest was the recommendation that legislation had to be twisted to form a uniform board for the governing of normal colleges and universities in California. This issue resulted in the formulation of a law that placed the normal colleges and universities in California under the State Board of Education.
We need to be a school district that prepares all students to be productive members of society. We need to expose our students to the real world and help them see that the world is bigger than our very small community. We need to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed and reach their goals. We need be a school with a pluralistic culture. Our students need to be culturally competent and have a good understanding of diversity. We need to promote the acceptance and celebration of people from all walks of life. We need to develop a supportive atmosphere where students feel they can express their beliefs freely without prejudice or judgment.

The Chicago Board of Education meets once a month to discuss issues relevant to Chicago Public Schools, entertain public comments, and make policy and fiscal decisions. Often times the Board meeting is held at Chicago Public Schools (CPS) central office at 10 a.m. However, both the timing and location of the meeting on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 differed. The meeting was held at Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy High School at 4:30 p.m. Gwendolyn Brooks is located on the far south side of Chicago. Hosting the meeting at a CPS school has both positives and negatives. By bolding the meeting at a school it allows for a less formal atmosphere in addition to providing the opportunity to showcase some of the beautiful properties CPS possesses. However, this particular school is not easily accessible by public transportation. This may cause a problem for some stakeholders that would like to participate in the school board meeting. Furthermore, 4:30 in the afternoon is an awkward time for a meeting as it is more difficult to find childcare during the evening hours. Additionally, finding details regarding this meeting was not easy. After a search was conducted on the CPS website, there was no mention of the board meeting. Once redirected to the Chicago Board of Education Site, information regarding the location of the meeting was supplied. However there wasn’t a visible start time or information regarding if the meeting was being broadcasted on a local
In the United States Declaration of Independence, it states that “all men are created equal”. This was written in 1776, so the fact that it was not incorporated into law until after the civil war seems illogical. Since slavery was so predominant in the United States, especially the South, the idea of all men being equal was not believed to be true. It was thought by most that whites had an advantage over African Americans and were ultimately better. The ratification of the 13th amendment in 1865 outlawed any type of “slavery or involuntary servitude”.
The Brown V. Board of Education was one of the biggest rulings that was made in the United States still to this day. After the slaves were given rights which happened because of emancipation proclamation many of the African American child were still going to all black schools. Over some time the Supreme Court ruled that black and white students are separate but equal. This means that black students had the same rights but they had to be in a different school than white students. The biggest problems of school separation occurred in the south. The Florida Constitution of 1865 had only set up that there would be land set aside for education, and that the money would come from taxes, but as this constitution was not accepted, it only served to help the Constitution of 1868(Article X).
