The Cannabis debate is a recurring theme that finds itself under the spotlight in British politics and public discussion. The reasons for the current legal status of Cannabis are largely misinformed. Politicians often assume that their predecessors had good reasons for arriving at their assessment of Cannabis, and are therefore reluctant to change the existing status. Yet Cannabis prohibition emerged from debates and legislation directed at Opium. The view subscribed by David Musto that Cannabis was introduced during a period of drug intolerance allows for a more integral understanding of how Cannabis found its way into prohibition. Cannabis is the standard name for hemp which is an adaptive and highly successful annual herb found growing throughout the temperate and tropical zones of the world. Carolus Linnaeus, the Swedish “father of botany” named it cannabis sativa in 1753 which is primarily used to describe the plant found in European climates. Fibre can be obtained from the stem, and in some cases, from the leaf which is employed for the manufacture of rope. The finer parts of the fibre were also used to produce cloth and linen.
