San Luis Obispo County spans over 3,616 square miles. Currently, in all of that area, there are only two active homeless shelters according to the San Luis Obispo Homeless Shelter Directory. The Maxine Lewis Memorial Homeless Shelter provides 50 beds year round, with anywhere between 25-35 additional overflow beds provided by one church every month. The Santa Maria Emergency Shelter Campus has 150 beds available for up to 90 days at a time. Our two homeless shelters can only house up to 235 occupants at a time (SLO Homeless...). At any given time, as I had mentioned earlier, between 2,000 and 4,000 people are homeless in our county. It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out that there is not nearly enough housing options available to those in need. Now, that’s not to say that there are only two places that offer programs to help the homeless. We have many programs such as the Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo which offers many different services and programs to ensure the homeless are getting the help they need. The county itself offers a wide variety of programs available to the homeless as well such as drug rehabilitation programs, meal services, and mental health services. When people envision our beautiful little town, for the most part they think imagine the serene beaches, beautiful weather, and cool college town vibe. Oprah has even donned it the “happiest place on earth.” It’s doubtful, though, that either Oprah or the other visitors who come to
Here in Tahoe, we are lucky enough to experience a great quality of life, and only a few have to face the horrible life of poverty and homelessness. However, nationwide, even right outside the basin, homelessness is a growing epidemic across the country. There are many ways one can become homeless; for the most part poverty. There are also different concentrations of homeless in different types of terrain, such as urban or suburban areas. Last, there is the ever- growing homeless population, and how much money it costs us for others to live in poverty. These are the questions we ask ourselves about homelessness, and the only way we can help is to know the facts about this lingering
This research project studied the broad subject of homelessness from a distinctive perspective. Homeless individuals have different needs, and different human services organizations offer many homeless service programs to individuals, from temporary shelter to transitional housing, and training and health programs among others. Nonetheless, the most important service needed for homeless individuals should be the one that leads to permanent housing solutions. However, findings from this research study suggested that not all homeless service programs are as effective in alleviating homelessness in the community, as most have been led to believe in the past. Therefore, the required question had to be, how effective are homeless service programs in alleviating homelessness in the City of Springfield MA? Finding an answer to that question was the primary reason for this research. This research study sought to know more about the effectiveness of two distinctive service programs, which although similar in services offered, both operate with completely different funding and visions on how to solve the
Often it is housing, that absorbs high proportion of income that can cause Americans to become homeless. Twelve million homeowners and renters pay more that fifty percent of their annual earnings for housing. This percentage is astonishing high for the county who has the best weapon system in the world. Although, several programs were developed such as the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to stabilized homelessness, America should not have a large amount of homeless people, we should take care of our own people. According to National Coalition for the Homeless (“In a survey of 24 cities, people remain homeless an average of seven months, and 87% of cities reported that the length of time people are homeless has increased in recent years (U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2005)”). Seeing children and families living in shelters should not be permitted, in this great nation. Instead of interfering with other countries well being, America should focus on its own citizens. Investing in increasing developing affordable programs would prevent people from becoming homeless, and be in
When walking down the streets of Los Angeles, people will often encounter homelessness. Homelessness is currently considered a major problem in Los Angeles. Since 2013 homeless population in Los Angeles has increased by 12 percent. According to SCANPH (Southern California Association of Nonprofit Housing), Los Angeles has the highest street homeless population in the nation. There are about 26,000 homeless people in the city of Los Angeles, and about 44,300 homeless people in the Los Angeles County; about 75 percent of these homeless are individuals, 17 percent are families, and 8 percent are minors. People can become homeless for different reasons, such as illnesses, domestic violence, physical disability, mental disability, and etc.
The clinical issues affecting the homeless individual can range from mental illness to health issues. Several clinical issues affect the homeless population because of lack of health insurance and clinical resources. “The clinical issues affecting homeless people are dental, vision, foot diseases, post-traumatic arthritis, HIV, TB, STD’s respiratory infections, diabetes, hypertension, and nutritional problems are all major clinical issues” (Zevin, 2013). Quite a few people are homeless and suffer from various clinical issues because they have no insurance, housing, support from family/friends, or program resources. It seems when populations such homelessness is so huge some are left behind with no help. Various social service organizations exist that cater to the homeless population, but so many individuals and families are not helped because of mis-direction. Health care is an important factor to many, especially those who do not have access to a health care facility. Social services resources are available as well as the human service
Currently, the county of Los Angeles has the most chronically homeless people in the country, and mainly all of them sleep on the streets (Holland, 2015 Nov. 19). The chronically homeless population in Los
Homelessness has always been a problem for the United States. Since its birth as a nation, there have consistently been individuals who find themselves without a place to live, looking for shelter with family, friends, or simply anywhere they can find it. These individuals have been targeted as candidates for social aid, but this was primarily provided by churches and other care organizations. However, in the past thirty years the homeless population has increased almost exponentially in numbers. While the cause of this is undetermined, it is quite certain that while the
When driving through Pasco, it will not take long before the homeless can be spotted all around. They can be found asking for money on main roads, seeking shelter under abandoned buildings, and wherever they can find a place to rest. Homelessness is continually becoming more noticeable and prevalent in the county , and it has become a growing problem for years. According to TBO.com, Pasco has the second highest rate of homelessness in the entire state of Florida.() This includes at least almost 4,500 men women and children and an additional 3,000 men and children.() Such a concentration of homeless individuals in one county is quite astonishing. Since homelessness is such a widespread epidemic in Pasco, raising money to support homeless organizations and using foreclosed houses to shelter the homeless could help lower the homeless rate.
There are varying estimates regarding the number of homeless people in America. According to reports from NLCHP the number of homeless people in America is 3 million which include 1.3 million children. ("Homelessness and Poverty, Overview," 1). As I am living in the state of California so I want you to take notice of the homelessness in this state. Estimates reveal that there are 4,400 to 8,800 homeless people in Foresno County (Della-Piana, 2006). The other areas like San Joaquin County has 2,700 people homeless (Farrow, 2009) and in Sacramento County there are similar number of homeless individuals. The situation has become worse due to financial crisis and financial conditions of foreclosures and layoffs. Other reasons are shortage of cheap housing and increase in inner city drug culture due to which homelessness increased in California's Central Valley.
The amount of homeless people in humboldt county has always been really high, but one main reason for their homelessness is drug addiction. In opioids and homelessness The National Alliance to End Homelessness says “ A survey by the United States Conference of Mayors found that 68 percent of cities reported that substance abuse was the largest cause of homelessness for single adults.” This shows how serious substance abuse is, and that it's prevalence in the homeless community. A lot of resources for the homeless are difficult for people who hardly have any money to support themselves to afford. According to can Humboldt solve addiction one night at a detox facility is about 150$. That is too much for someone with no bank account, and very little money on hand. We, as a people need to try an attack this issue and get it more funding so that addicts can afford the help they need. A lot of people don't want to help the homeless purely due to not understanding exactly how addiction has made them unable to work. The way addiction affects the body is serious and if you don't get help for too long you can permanently harm your body. And a lot of addicts aren’t even homeless, but don't have enough money to afford rehab. Humboldt county needs to help the homeless and sheltered addicts by spreading awareness and providing better funding for programs they need to get better.
At some point in one’s life, a person has seen or heard of an individual who lives on the streets. An individual who lives on the streets and holds a sign that says they need money for food is considered homeless. Sadly, these individuals are everywhere and the amount of people currently homeless in the United States is 564,708 according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness. However, in this nation, everyone has the ability to decrease this massive number. Necessary assistance from agencies, local funding, churches, and volunteers will place these homeless individuals in permanent housing. With this assistance, the number of homeless individuals will begin to decrease.
San Francisco has a large population of homeless people. San Francisco is the 13th most populated city and is the eighth worst city homeless rate with estimated 7,000 homeless in 2015. There are many factors that can result in the high number of homeless people. One of the most common reasons why is they could not get a job and they just decided to give up so they don’t have enough money to do anything. I think there is a lot of homeless because we live in a competitive world and there is bigger demand on jobs than there is supply of it.
There is one federally funded program in which we will talk about later that helps homeless individuals get the care they need. There is a dire need for more programs that assist the homeless because the number one reason they are homeless is because they cannot afford housing. If they cannot afford this they probably will not be able to afford the necessities to live a healthy lifestyle. When youths and adolescents succumb to homelessness they are at a greater risk, because they do not have the resources an adult would. They have a disadvantage of employment opportunities and are a greater risk of not completing high school. Youths will lack the ability to receive health care, which will create problems in their overall health because they will not be able to receive the care they need in the instance of sickness, injury or access to medicines. There are countless reasons that adults succumb to being homeless. Some are that a job was lost, mental health is prevalent among them, substance abuse and spouse abuse. Adults who are experiencing homelessness have some of the same problems that youths do as well. An adult not being able to receive health care is very serious especially for older homeless adults. Sickness and serious health problems are more prevalent in older adults resulting in untimely death and the spreading of sicknesses and diseases. I have some establishments offering free haircuts to the homeless if they are preparing for an interview. I have also
Yes, the Coalition for Responsible Community Development is a Community Development Corporation. The CRDS is CDS because they are both community based organizations created to improve the quality of life in low income areas. Both of these organizations uses resources within their own community. The various ways in which CDS effects the community is it brings in money into communities by creating residential, and commercial property. Some examples of residential areas would be affordable housing, also some commercial properties such as shopping malls, and small businesses. Also CDC affects the community because a vast majority of the board is made of community residents, allowing for people who actually live there, and are effected by the
California has the most unsheltered homeless population as well. The prevalence of being homeless is 1 in every 332 people. Riverside county, located in southern California, reported that there 2,165 homeless. Of those 2,165, only 841 were considered shelter while on the other hand 1,352 were unsheltered. They ran the same test for 2017 and the numbers increased. 2,413 are now accounted with the number of sheltered decreased to 775 and unsheltered increased to 1,638. (County of Riverside, 2017)
