Mass Shootings
There is no question that mass shootings are happening more frequently. The question is are they happening to often? They have become more common, but have always been a problem in the world. Shootings have been happening since the invention of guns, but as we come closer to our era mass shootings have been happening more regularly. These shootings need to be stopped and put an end to. But how can we as a whole all come together and put an end to it? The statistics and facts that are going to be used give valid reasons to where the shootings take place, how it happens and the number of casualties and lives taken from these shootings.
Mass shootings have recently become more frequent and more deadly over the years. Living in the U.S. we have lived through at least fifty years of mass shootings and a variation of tragedies. A mass shooting is when a gunman shoots or kills four or more people in the same general time and location. The three most deadly shootings that have occurred in the U.S. in the past ten years are “ Las Vegas attack (at least 58 killed), Virgina Tech massacre (32 killed), Orlando nightclub shooting(49 dead)”(Willingham). These shootings exemplify the lack of control that we have over guns and the type of people that have possession of the guns. If we want to try to control the type of people who can own a gun, then the government should keep updated on the people who buy bigger guns with more rounds and do mental background checks. “The researchers also found that most mass murderers suffered from some mental instability, though they usually weren’t flagged by mental health specialists or law enforcement. And military-style rifles were used in 18 of the 66 mass public shootings in the most recent 15-year period the researchers studied”(Shastry, Anjali). If a person has possession a military-style rifle that should automatically redflag the government. Some of the main reasons that these things happen are because the government or law enforcement don't keep tabs on these people. Media today plays a big part in the mass shootings believe it or not. “Media contagion” is largely responsible for the increase in these often deadly outbursts”(Media Contagion). By showing the number
Has the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill led to the increase of mass shootings experienced in the US? According to Lankford, several reports suggest that up to 60% of offenders of mass shootings in the US since 1970, exhibited symptoms including depression, delusions, and acute paranoia prior to the commission of their crimes. Further statistics have shown that since 1982, there have been at least 71 public mass shooting across the country; with 34 of these mass shooting having occurred since 2006. A recent analysis of the database by researchers at Harvard University corroborated by a recent FBI study concluded that mass shootings have been on the rise. More than half of the cases involve school or workplace shootings, 12 and 20
When we hear the words mass shooting, most of us immediately pause and begin to think the worst. We are filled with sorrow that soon turns to anger as details of the event emerge. A portion of the population immediately begins to call for more gun regulation and the battle is staged again. This scenario plays out in the media and in the legislative halls around the country and seems to occur on a much too frequent basis. Has the frequency of mass shootings actually increased? Or has technology allowed the media to convey stories within minutes of their occurrence giving the appearance of increasing crime? Many people believe the term mass shooting and inner city are almost synonymous
Imagine this, it’s a sunny day and you and your family are out eating ice cream at a park suddenly you hear 3 pops, people screaming, blood everywhere and one of your family members lying on the floor, what would you do?According to the government, the definition of mass shootings is that 4 or more people are killed, victims are selected randomly, and the attack is in a public place. Mass shootings started in the 1910’#, but got worse in the 1070s. In the The 1990s, there were 42 mass shootings due to easy access to guns. U.S. citizens own more guns than any other country. Some suggestions from liberals/gun control advocates to solve the problem of mass shootings are to address mental health illness seriously, common sense control, and re-examine the media’s role publicizing violence. Some suggestions that the conversation/gun rights advocates have are school and public buildings should have more physical barriers such as ballistic glass and steal plating and they should have more trained, air,
Media today plays a big part in the mass shootings believe it or not. “Media contagion” is largely responsible for the increase in these often deadly outbursts”(Media Contagion). By showing the number of casualties on media this can give ideas to the next shooter. The next possible shooter could get an idea of trying to outdo the previous shooter by attempting to kill more people and to do more damage. There was a scenario where a TV reporter posted a video of himself gunning down two ex colleagues and posted the video all over Twitter and Facebook, the next day after this all occurred the shots of him gunning down innocent people from the shooters perspective were plastered all over the newspaper. “The Daily News said that it published the images “to convey the true scale” of the attack “at a time when it is so easy for the public to become inured to such senseless violence”(Follman, Mark). This shows how it can influence other mentally ill people to shoot to kill and shoot to kill a mass number of people. This all has been researched and could be somewhat prevented by not so much giving out the details of an incident like this and giving titles out like “greatest mass shooting” to influence other people.
As a result of the Las Vegas Massacre, people are demanding political action to be taken. Mass shootings have been almost too regularly occurring in the past ten years. In fact, just in our current year, “there have been two hundred and seventy three mass shootings in the United States” (Fox 1). This number averages to seven and a half mass shootings per week! These staggering numbers are pressing a very real issue to our leader on gun control laws. A mass shooting has no true definition but follows a strict criteria.According to the Gun Violence Archive, which receives data from shooting incidents, a "mass shooting" is any incident in which a gunman kills four or more people, selects victims randomly, and attacks in a public place (Fox 1). It is necessary for action to be taken in order to decline the occurrence of gun violence. The topic of gun control has sparked great controversy amongst Americans. Protests regarding this issue has led me to research gun control to see how heavily it corresponds with mass shootings. Are more strict gun control laws essential to low gun- related crimes in the United States?
Are we as a country helpless against mass shooters? What can we do as a country to decrease the amount of innocent people dying at the hands of a mass shooter? In a perfect world, mass shootings would be eliminated completely. Unfortunately, this is unrealistic. So, what can we do as a country to decrease the number of mass shootings occurring in the United States? By performing mental health screenings on people wishing to purchase a firearm, emphasizing mental health education beginning at a young age, reforming healthcare, eliminating gun-free zones, encouraging citizens to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon, and banning military style assault weapons we can decrease the number of mass shootings occurring in the United States.
From the Connecticut Sandy Hook School shooting in 2012, to the Recent Parkland School shooting in Florida, hundreds of innocent students and adults have been murdered by guns, and the public is questioning whether or not to have more gun control laws. In order to protect and prevent these traumatic mass shootings we need to pay attention to citizens who have mental issues, have stricter gun purchasing laws, and also stop selling military replicas.
The world we live in today is corrupted with people whose motives are unethical and what some people would call unpredictable. Today’s generation is growing up in darkness where nobody can even dream of the light. Mass shootings are happening more commonly and actions aren’t being taken into initiative. Morals, are a person 's standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable for them to do. A person with basic moral principles can see it’s not acceptable for someone to shoot up a concert, or go into a church and spray multiple rounds. Yet we have people today who find it acceptable to go about their business this way. However, what about the people whose morals and ethics go totally against the thought of killing?
The number of school shootings is increasing every day. Since 2013 there have been over 200 school shootings in
When we find a reading vastly interesting and informative regarding a recent or an upcoming event, we fail to realize that many writers insert their biases when composing their work. There are certain things they don’t want to include as well as things that they want the reader to believe. It seems kind of like a jack in the box. You crank the pull bar and never pay attention to the noises or anything and then bam! You’re hit with the jack and you get a reality check. Although people don’t want to admit it there is still a stigma towards homosexuality. Many are bullied and discriminated through the USA solely based on the person they want to be happy with. If we let our old ideology cage us from following what our hearts want, we cannot say
Recently, the frequency of mass shootings has been on the rise. It is as if they
Not everyone can agree to the exact definition of a mass shooting, Not every shooter has the same motives, or executes their attack the exact same way as the shooter before him/her, but they all do have one thing in common, access to guns. Mass shootings are a vulgar, cowardly act, but they will not stop as long as people have access to assault weapons, or any weapons for that matter. Some people against gun control would compromise and ban only assault weapons, but it is not only assault weapons that are used for mass shootings, the list of firearms that have been used in mass shootings range from handguns, all the way up to high-powered rifles. The gunman of Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, killed 32 students and teachers, used only a 9mm pistol. Technology has advanced and people have become crazier since the writing of the first 10 Amendments, and although it’s only a few committing mass shootings, it would be safer to completely take guns out of the
How these tragedies occur and what causes them is the topic that arises as an effect of these shootings. Most parents do not worry about whether their kids will grow up to be psychopaths, sociopaths, or mass shooters. They also do not worry about how the media their children are exposed to will affect them. Moreover, these parents are more likely to be concerned with how their children interact with other kids and other family members. Day-to-day social interactions just seem more important. All kids throw aggressive temper tantrums but that does not mean they are capable of being violent. We recognize that there are outside influences that lead to an individual's aggression but we rarely acknowledge that aggression may correlate with violent media.
The author discusses the major role of mass media in mass shootings, and makes connections between the different reactions mass media has had between different shootings. The authors studies are extremely helpful when looking for information on society's reactions to mass shootings. These studies are also helpful when comparing different types of shootings, not just school shootings. The author further explains to the reader how one can go about comprehending mass shootings and this is helpful because it helps the reader answer their own questions of why shooters resort to rampage shooting, and how they go about doing so. The reader is then able to make arguments concerning mass shootings and why it is important to analyze
A mass shooting in Las Vegas at a country music concert, a shooting in a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, along with many more throughout the States in the past 5 years. Some people say more gun control is the answer to all of these mass shootings, while others say less gun control and a better knowledge of weapons and firearms for the common individual is the answer. Putting more background checks, and restrictions on guns might be the ideal way to fight shootings, or it might just fuel more of them, by making it harder for common folks to acquire a firearm. Not only does this make people more vulnerable, it causes them to feel safer when they have a thought that there is less weapons out there to harm them, then when something like a shooting happens they question why the rules, regulations, and restrictions didn’t work.
