The Four Characteristics Of Creative And Critical Thinking

This paper will introduce critical thinking and creative problem solving with an emphasis on the latter. In doing so, it will attempt to describe any similarities and differences between the two.

Creative thinking is described as being intuitive, being creative and visual; and discovering new ideas. Creative thinking asks questions such as why? What if? What else? In creative thinking, a person can envision potential ideas and alternatives as an approach to problem solving. According to Simpson and Courtney (2002), creative thinking is of its greatest value when known solutions have failed and change has not occurred.

I immensely struggled when writing. Taking my scrambled thoughts and uncoordinated analysis and converting it into clean and understandable words on a page was arduous. I could not express my thoughts in proper academic format. I understood the importance of writing to every subject. It was essential that I learn to condense my ideas and feeling into coherent written word. After much debate, I decided that the best way to improve my writing skills was to take an advanced English course.

Within critical thinking I have learned critical thinking skills such as how to communicate appropriately through the use of writing. some of those skills include writing to discover patterns, find new ways of tackling a project, even to improve a new way of thinking (The Craft of research p.14). Knowing beforehand what your target audience might think can help you structure your piece to be better received. Critical and creative thinking are two categories that analyze information and solve problems in either concrete or abstract ways. Assessing the ability to teach these skills as an overarching concept including subcategories within, is an essential piece to instruction. Without a proper evaluation of the strengths, areas for growth, and improvement plans, it becomes easy to feel misplaced or uncertain about what skills are being taught and at what depth they are being learned.

The concepts of critical thinking and creative thinking are both gaining increasing importance in the world today. Critical thinking allows people to understand difficult concepts in a manner that is clearer and more defined. They can more readily understand those concepts if they employ critical thinking. In all portions of everyday life, a person is expected to make independent judgments. Those judgments are based on experience and knowledge. Without the ability to think critically, every situation that a person comes across would have to be considered in isolation from all other situations. When a person encounters a problem that is a new one, he or she may be able to use critical thinking to solve those problems.

In teaching and learning English, there are two aspects that should be concerned. The first one is the language skills such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The second one is the language components such as vocabulary, and grammar. These two aspects are taught in order to make the students achieve the ability in communicating both in spoken and written forms.
