The concept of global warming has become one of the most widely debated and controversial topics of our time. Scientists learned long ago that the earth’s climate has powerfully shaped the history of humanity. However, it is only in the past few decades that research has revealed that humans have a significant influence on the climate as well. A growing body of scientific evidence indicates that since 1950, the world’s climate has been warming, primarily as a result of emissions from the burning of fossil fuels and the destruction of tropical forests. More importantly, an article titled "Global Warming" published in the New York Times shows that methane, a gas that is emitted from landfills, livestock and oil gas facilities, …show more content…
Sources for this paper include articles, books, and websites. Terms will be defined as the arguments are presented. Scientists who believe in global warming say that global warming is the result of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun’s heat which causes the earth to heat up. In fact, according to Amber Jenkins, site editor for "Global Warming: Vital Signs of the Planet," meteorologists at NASA (National Aeronautics & Space Administration) have reported that “Earth is the hottest it has been in at least 400 years, and possibly even the last 2,000 years. Studies indicate that the average global temperature has increased by approximately 0.5-1.0°F (0.3-0.6°C) over the last century” (Jenkins). However, CEI scientists have reported that there is no proof that rising temperatures are linked to global warming. The Earth has gone through various periods of cooling and warming throughout its history. The rising temperatures are simply the Earth warming itself up from the previous ice age (Competitive Enterprise Institute). Contrasting with the virtual world of computer simulations, the real world presents a very different picture. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) website even states that: During the last 2,000 years, there have been departures from the stability of earth’s natural course
The globe is being rocked by extreme weather and the hottest temperatures on record. As the average global temperature soars, there are floods, droughts, unusually cold winters, forest fires, and huge storms. Are all of these horrors being caused by human-induced global warming?
Global warming has been happening for a long time, and carbon dioxide has been going up to our atmosphere ever since the eighteen hundreds the average surface temperature has increased one degree Fahrenheit since then. Most of the increases of the temperature has occurred the past three decades which means we’ve been destroying our earth the past thirty years.
The date is 450 years into the future. The calendar reads March 1st, 2465. The world is much different than how it was 400, 500 years ago. Your know those warnings scientists have been crying out for years about global warming? Well, they were true, and their effects were much more severe than anticipated…
shrugging it off. This is issue is bigger than a rivalry between countries. It’s a bigger issue than building a wall to separate the United States and Mexico. Global Warming is definitely a bigger
The issue of global warming needs to be considered as a serious problem. Environmental, economic and health consequences will occur if this current trend continues to happen. These effects will keep on being escalated, and become costlier and harming, at last will progressively influence the whole planet.
It seems silly to actually take global warming seriously when earth’s weather patterns are constantly changing and cycling. History books and high school classes tell students how “mini-ice ages” have occurred in relatively recent history. In fact, whispers have spread about how once people even believed in global cooling. In some parts of the world, and even throughout the United States, climate change could be a welcome and beneficial event. For example, “New England, the Pacific Northwest, and the Great Lake states may all prosper as growing seasons lengthen, and the number of frigid, deadly winter days decrease. In most optimistic scenarios, some counties could see their incomes rise by 10 percent by the middle of the century” (Meyer). While some parts of the country receive setback in industry, another sector would pick up the slack, so to say. Life would surely change, but humans have always adapted to the hand they are dealt. Also, some people acknowledge climate change and even admit that it is an occurring event, but they do not care because they do not believe that it will affect them. Others are worried about the change but see it as an unstoppable doom. Admittedly, It is true that “future warming of the climate is inevitable for many years due to the greenhouse gases already added to the atmosphere and the heat that has been taken up by the oceans” (“Climate Change”). There it is--that shocking statement. If climate change is so inevitable, one may wonder why
When talking about global warming we want to know if it is true or not. When your current government says the whole thing is a hoax and man-made who are we to believe. President Trump withdrew from the Paris climate agreement, even going as far as trying to get rid of climate research itself. When people watch news outlets reporting that global warming is false wouldn’t you believe it too? Doing research on the internet you may come across information that agree with the government and you may find ones that say global warming is real. Since the Industrial Revolution the 1750s, carbon dioxide levels have risen and continues to rise today. Studies have shown that the carbon dioxide levels have created a warming trend and it is likely it is the outcome of human activity. Carbon dioxide can act as a blanket on the earth’s surface which allows the earth to absorb heat making it hotter.
Bridget Heos, nonfiction author, wrote in Its Getting Hot in Here: The Past, Present, and Future of Climate Change, “In America, uniting to achieve a goal may be difficult, as some political leaders are acting on the view that global warming doesn’t exist, that humans are not causing it, or that it is not a concern.” Three main arguments against global warming are enlightened by Heos’ highlighted section of the discussion; it doesn’t exist, humans don’t cause it, and it isn’t a concern. However, science refutes all of these concerns.
Global warming is the earth warming up, the Earth is warming up because of the greenhouse gasses makes the earth warm up every year it wasn’t a big problem as it is today when they first discovered it. It’s a huge problem today because were having animals in danger for example polar bears. Recently in Antarctica it reached 62 degrees. Which means US as a planet need to do our part and take care of this planet. The atmosphere generally attributes to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide Carbons and other pollutants.
The world today is divided into two different points of view regarding global warming. Most people claim that recent human activities and the use of fossil fuel cause global warming. They have the same collective conscience which influences their belief on global warming. There is lots of evidence to support this opinion and by using inductive logic they conclude that
Since late 1800 scientists have studied the phenomenon of Global Warming and majority of them had concluded that human activities are responsible for most of the warming. Human activities contribute to global warming by enhancing earth’s natural greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect warms the earth surface through the complex process involving sunlight, gases and particles in the atmosphere. Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere are known as greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. There are few scientists who argue that the increase in the greenhouse gases had not made a measurable difference in the climate. Therefore the claim that human activities are causing the global climatic to warm
For most scientists the topic of global warming is one that is caused by us humans. They have many facts data to back this up. Some examples of these facts and data are the change in CO2 levels in the atmosphere, the rapid increase in temperature, stronger storms such as hurricanes, melting ice caps, decrease in permafrost, and the Larsen A & B ice shelves. These are some of the biggest
The temperature of the Earth has gone up and down over it’s life, but it’s been about the same over the past couple of thousands of years. But the Earth’s temperature is rising, and fast. The reason that the temperature is rising is because of the ‘man made’ greenhouse effect. This is caused when carbon dioxide and other gasses are put into the air through the burning of fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide absorbs infrared radiation, and most of the heat energy that tries to escape the Earth’s atmosphere comes in a infrared radiation forum. More carbon dioxide, means more infrared radiation is being absorbed which leads to an overall increase in the earth’s temperature.
First discovered at the turn of the century by the Swedish scientist Arrhenius, global warming was initially thought to only cause increased greenhouse gases from coal combustion emissions. It wasn’t until fifty years later that the real causes and effects of global warming would be discovered. A British scientist by the name of Calendar correlated the 10% increase of atmospheric Carbon Dioxide between 1850 and 1940 with the observed warming of northern Europe and North America, which began in the 1880's. As for the cause of global warming, scientists generally believe that both the combustion of fossil fuels and other human activities are the primary reason for the increased concentration of carbon dioxide. Human
The Earth receives energy, light and warmth from the sun. As the earth and the objects on earth become warm, they radiate their warmth back toward space in the form of infrared energy. However, there are gases known as trace gases that make up less than 1% of Earth’s atmosphere which are able to trap some of the outgoing heat. Water vapor is vastly abundant in the atmosphere and generates a blanketing effect that keeps the surface of the earth at a temperature that allows life to exist. In addition to water vapor, carbon dioxide is another trace gas that is naturally present in the atmosphere. It’s powerful heat-trapping capabilities are essential for life and in processes such as respiration and photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide levels are
