The sewing machine is basically a textile machine. It is used for stitching together things such as fabric, paper, card, or other material with some type of thread. The sewing machine needed to be something that was functional and compact. It would need to be something that was simple to use and be able to sew faster and more efficiently then hand sewing was. Up until the time that the sewing machine was invented, women would spend great amounts of time sewing. Some of those factors include needle type, thread type, what type of stitch it produces, some sort of device to form the specific stitch, and it had to have some type of support for the cloth. There also had to be a mechanism to allow one stitch to follow the previous one, a tension control and something to make sure the sewing machine did what it needed to in the correct sequence without error. Although engineering disciplines were not as defined as they are today. Several disciplines were involved in the creation of the sewing machine. Mechanical engineering was involved in the creation of the mechanical parts used to make the sewing machine do its job. Some sewing machines used a type of pulley system to function; textile engineers designed the rope used in this pulley system. Metallurgical engineers were involved in the process of developing the cast iron used for the sewing machine itself as well as the decorative legs on home sewing machines. In addition, once electricity was introduced, electrical engineers were used to create the wiring system. The sewing machine greatly changed the way our society functions. Without the sewing machine, the world would be a very different place. The technology from Slater produced greatly which increased the speed of the cotton thread that could be spun into yarn. When he introduced a new technology to the United States, economic takeoff of the Industrial Revolution requested other elements before turning into American life.
The industrial revolution was a time of great change in Europe. Many of those changes were brought about by mechanical inventions that greatly increased efficiency by which raw materials were processed. "While working in the sciences and tinkering with mechanics, a few people were able to come up with new ways of doing things. New machines were invented" (MacroHistory and World Report) Three significant machines that were invented during this time period that greatly increased the cotton industry were the cotton gin, the spinning jenny, and the power loom. Since cotton was one of the major cash crops exported by the colonies to England, it is important to understand these inventions in order to grasp the changes brought about by this trio of machines on the cotton industry.
With industrialization, manufacturing became more mechanized and efficient. New technological innovations were invented such as machines which helped with mass production. Workplaces had changed with this advancement because highly skilled workers were now replaced with machines. By 1870, machines were so advanced that they were capable of producing items by the millions. For example, the sewing machine mass produced clothing and linens (Shi and Tindall 622). Typewriters and sewing machines changed how businesses operated. This innovation allowed more women to be in the workforce because they had more dextile fingers, which was needed for these machines. Starting in the early 19th century,the United States underwent a process of industrialization. Two technological changes from this process of industrialization had a big impact on the lifestyles of Americans. Also,a transportation improvement made from this process of industrialization helped the United States expand towards West. The first of these technological changes from this process of industrialization is the textile mill,specifically the first textile mill opened in the U.S.This had an impact on the lifestyles of Americans by being the first invention to kickstart the U.S Industrial Revolution. This is because the Industrial Revolution first started in Britain and was brought to America by Samuel Slater who memorized some of the inventions.
According to Factory systems (document 7), the cotton spinning mill help made clothes a lot cheaper because everyone could have their own Factory system. This was very helpful because resources were more easy to access and everyone had it available to them. Also, according to document 4, clothes were made faster and cheaper and with the new invention called the Power Loom it was a lot more productive. The Power Loom impacted daily life by making clothes at a much faster rate and providing more products for everyone.
Mass production used machines to help performed tasks that someone who would have the specific skills could at a quicker pace. This helped since now factory owners can hire non skilled workers to do a skilled workers job which in result caused more products to be made.
It was primarily designed to sew leather and canvass for boots and used a single needle to produce a simple chain stitch (Museum of American Heritage, 2010).
Sewing machines were first purchased by the public in the 1860s, often by women, which cut down their sewing time from approximately 14.5 hours by hand, to 1 hour using the machine. By 1863, the Singer Manufacturing Company were selling 20,000 machines a year for household use. The invention of the sewing machine was important for many reasons. One reason it helped kick start the Industrial Revolution by making it possible for large companies to mass produce clothing.
62.667% of the rollers are with proper specification. 37.333% of the rollers are oversize and need reworked. No roller is below the limit. That means no cam roller will be scrapped.
Imagine a life where we would still have to ride in carriages to get down the streets and make our own clothes instead of just buying them. Well times similar to these have passed after the Industrial Revolution had started taking place. In addition to these inventions, there were the interchangeable parts, improved transportation, communication, clothes, and modern cities. The Industrial Revolution started with the invention of the Steam Engine by James Watt in 1775 (1). It was basically an engine that would induce the energy of steam to move other machines such as trains and powering factories. It was an incredible source of energy for transportation and goods. Public transportation such as locomotives could now be powered by the steam engine and this increased the speed of travel, which lowered the time to arrive at the destination. After the steam engine, the cotton gin invented by Eli Whitney was another remarkable invention during the Industrial Revolution. This machine easily separated the cotton fibers from its seeds. The first washer machine was in fact not a machine, but a scrub board! Some people feel the washing machine uses a lot of electricity. In my opinion, I strongly believe the washing machine had a great impact on society. The washing machine is a big help to society because, otherwise we would have to use our hands.
Be the 1750's, the Industrial Revolution had begun. In the beginning, inventions were limited to cotton weaving. This quickly changed with new inventions such as the spinning jenny and the water powered frame. A problem existed in which yarn was not being fed fast enough to the weaver, but in 1769 the spinning jenny and the water powered frame solved this problem by providing yarn faster. Edmund Cartwright, in 1880, invented the power loom, and it combined both the machine's characteristics and purposes in one machine. Cleaning cotton was always an extremely difficult and time consuming job. In 1793, Eli Whitney created a brilliant invention, the cotton gin. This marvelous invention could clean cotton 50 times faster then the average person. These new inventions all assisted the manufacturing of cotton goods by speeding up the process. (members.aol).
This division of labor was less time consuming and the worker could make more and a less amount of time. The invention of these machines reduced the amount of time that the workers had to spend on making the items themselves. This in turn lessened the work for because soon there would be no need for the workers due to the machines. But, at the same time, they also fell in to the hands of big capitalists, and their workers were deprived of whatever independence remained to them (Marxists 3).
