Many of the objects used on daily basis are technology used to make life much easier. In the novel “Cat’s Cradle” it was the total opposite because there were many conflicts and the source of the problem was science and technology. After reading the lecture and the short stores by Jorge Luis Borges, one can able to conclude that we are surrounded by criminal activities. In every culture, region or country there are some sort of criminal activities more over the same type of crimes that occurs. In Latin America the crime rates were significantly high in the past and still continues in the 21st century. Each of these stories written by the author Jorge Luis Borges carries some kind of connection in Latin America.

Throughout history, and particularly in the last century there have been conflicting visions of how technological developments have impacted and solved the many problems of human-kind. Mary Tiles and Hans Oberdick highlight two conflicting visions towards the feelings of technological development. One side is optimistic, that believes in technological omnipotence that could help keep control of the environment and human destiny. On the other end of the spectrum, technological pessimists believe in technological impotence, and that human nature would be incapable of controlling technological advancement, thus extracting all of the Earth’s resources and spiraling out of control. From the optimistic view humans are in absolute control of the technologies that are produced. Technology is used according to its needed purpose, and thus may or may not be needed to help the further development of humanity. For this reason, we can say that optimists believe that technology is value neutral, as human nature is responsible for deciding how we use technology

In what I disagree with Folger is in how he mentions that science makes everything better which I don’t think is totally true. For the reason, that it has made people more dependent on materialistic things. In addition, all this technology is also making people lazier. Which this leads to obesity because now they are just sitting down and with a push of a button things can be brought to them or they can go anywhere sitting down. This is becoming more of an issue and a concern, yes some scientific creations have become very handy but it’s quite scary to see that these creations are taking over. In part two, Schumacher argues that our current use of resources is inefficient because there is a misconception surrounding the term. He criticizes the educational system for supporting scientists to merely create a know-how system without having the supporting wisdom to solve life problems. Schumacher emphasized that scientists take innovation development for granted while forgetting about how to enhance the meaning of life. Furthermore, the author also states that the massive consumption of resources occurring for industry will deplete our resources. For instance, Americans consume forty percent of the world’s natural resources exploiting the resources for the rest of the world and for both current and future generation. Schumacher also suggests that technology can kill human creativity because industries try to promote the shift from human labor to machines. It is false to believe that machines are more intelligent than man.

Have technology and science lead to a sustainable and ethical world? Will it in the future? Four philosophers all have lent their opinion on the subject. Marx believed technology is positive until touched by capitalism. Heidegger holds true the idea that handicraft or antiquated technology improved our human experience while modern technology does not. Arendt beliefs science alienates us from this world. Bostrom believes technology is the light at the end of the tunnel. These philosophers have spent their life coming to these conclusions and many of the opinions are mutually exclusive. One should hear from all of them before forming an opinion on technology and its effect on humankind.
