The Northwest Ordinance is considered if not, one of the most important legislative acts of the Confederation Congress. Officially titled “An Ordinance for the Government of the Territory of the United States North West of the River Ohio” the Northwest Ordinance was a document adopted by the Confederation Congress. Sometimes known as the Ordinance of 1787, adopted July 13, 1787, by the Second Continental Congress established a government for the Northwest Territory. This ordinance outlined the process for admitting a new state into the Union, and guaranteed that the newly created states would in fact be equal to all original thirteen states, the Northwest Ordinance also focused on protecting civil liberties and completely outlawed slavery within the new territories. Adopting the Northwest Ordinance ended a long bitter period of debating how to organize the western territories of the United States.

Since the creation of the United States Constitution, the many leaders of our nation took different roles in trying to attain perfectionism for their country. From the federalist views of John Adams to the democratic views of Jefferson, America was experiencing the endeavor that was being a young nation in the midst of the 19th century. The emergence of John Quincy Adams in 1820 started an “Era of Good Feelings” with exceptional political advancements and economic achievements. While Jackson’s democratic views were not always what were expected, during his presidency, the country grew national and world attraction. Through periods of boom and bust, political and economic changes in America undeniably helped reshape society between the years 1820 and 1848 with the emergence of new and innovative advancements.

The Market Revolution adversely affected the liberty of Native Americans residing within the United States because they were seen as an obstacle to the country’s economic progress. As the Market Revolution ideas of commerce and expansion took hold in the minds of the people, these white citizens shared the view that Native Americans were hindering the goal of expansion. The citizens believed it was their God-sanctioned right to settle the West (Manifest Destiny) and the Native Americans stood in the way. Conflicts with Native Americans have existed in America since the first settlers, but with the increased emphasis on commerce and development brought by the Market Revolution, the relations worsened. In 1823, during the case of Johnson v M’Intosh, the Supreme Court claimed that Native Americans only had the “right of occupancy” on their land, and that they did not own it. In 1830, under Jackson’s administration, the Indian Removal Act was created which tried to move the 5 Civilized Tribes out of their lands.

Slavery would break up almost all African-American families, and this was against family institution. In an effort to prevent the expansion of slavery throughout the rest of the country the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 was put into effect as the earliest effort to contain slavery by prohibiting it in the Old Northwest (Document A). Slavery would not be allowed in this area. In the North, white influential people would help slaves gain freedom (Document C).

AAmerica began as a small struggling nation, with each citizen desiring an opportunistic way of life. To achieve this way of life, many changes needed to be made. Different people with distinctive ideas came together, and although there was conflict, they made great changes politically, socially, and economically.
