The Income Gap

Poverty is “about not having enough money to meet basic needs including food, clothing and shelter”(what is poverty, 2009). Everybody might know this meaning and the problem.

In this paper I will be discussing the wealth gap. I will also be discussing if there should be a “special” tax to redistribute the wealth. I hope to enlighten the reader of the issue of the wealth gap, and if a tax would help.

The number of children who are living in poverty have decreased for the first time in almost ten years. The Census Bureau reported a 0.5 percent decrease of Americans living in poverty from 2012 to 2013. Poverty is among the country’s contemporary social problems in the Twenty-First Century. According to the Census Bureau, 45.3 million people were categorized as living in poverty in 2013. To address contemporary social problems like poverty, one must take an in depth look at the reasons why there are so many people dealing with poverty and the challenges that arise from trying to escape it.

“What is poverty? Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty is losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water. Poverty is an authentic life issue people all over the world continue to struggle with. There are many countries that try to help those in poverty, but a complete solution has not been found. Although there are countless definitions of poverty, according to Schwartz, he states in his article the United States Government says; “Poverty is a state of deprivation, or a lack of the usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions”. The government calculates poverty based on the total income a person may receive and it does not include non-cash supplements (Schwartz).

Poverty is a word to describe someone who is “lower class” meaning they don’t have enough money to support themselves nor their family. Many of those living in poverty don’t have the necessities to live, like food, water, and in many cases shelter. People who live in poverty can’t live their lives the way they want. I want this to be abolished in the future because many people who live in poverty are starving, and can't receive an education,

Poverty can be understood as the inability to meet a variety of basic needs and entitlements, through a lack of income, access to resources or empowerment. Poverty at a national scale is complex and is caused by an array of factors including many generated within the country but also others that are caused by external factors (figure 1).

Many describe poverty as an economic deprivation, or lack of income. However, this alone does not incorporate the different social, cultural and political aspects of this unfortunate reality. Poverty is not only a deprivation of economic or material resources but a violation of human dignity. The general scarcity, lack, or the state of one without a specific amount of material possessions or money. It is a versatile concept that may be defined as either absolute or relative. Time and again, poverty is a call to action, for the poor and the wealthy alike, it is a call to change the world so that many more may have enough to eat, adequate shelter, access to education and health, protection from violence, and a voice in what happens in their communities.

Poverty can be interpreted in many ways, in different parts of the world which include medical, nutrition, and materialistic. In today's world, the word poverty is well known throughout most societies, and been redefined in industrial countries were poor is classified having less than the rich. Poverty in my opinion is hunger, homeless, or being ill, but not having the opportunity to consult a doctor. Poverty is the fear of living your future without having the health care to live or starving because there is no food available to receive or drinking unclean water. Despite the many attempts to eliminate poverty, the problem has never been solved on the way look at the true meaning of it. The effort to solve the problem with the people that really need the help for example, in third world countries. You can't compare third world countries with America or Britain having access to resources helpful to live every day.

Poverty can be defined in many ways and can take many forms. Webster dictionary defines poverty as the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. I, on the other hand, define poverty as meaning people that have no money to live on or food to eat, and are struggling in everyday life. Society defines the issue of poverty in three forms of measuring poverty: extreme, moderate, and relative poverty.

Literally, poverty is a condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor1. It is a multi-faceted issue that include problems regarding income, cost-of-living, health and social cohesion1. Poverty affects multiple group of persons in the society and no one is immune to its consequences. Overtime, there has been a strong association between poverty and many health conditions such as chronic diseases (diabetes, heart disease), injuries, stress, anxiety, depression, and untimely deaths2.

According to world bank organization poverty is not just limited to hunger or lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not able to visit doctor. It is not able to have access to school. Being unemployed, fear for the future and living one day at a time are several different phases of poverty. Definition of poverty changes from place to place and with time. Mainly there are two types of poor, one by birth who is in born poor family and another who get poor by his situation like unemployed or lost everything in natural hazard.
