Introduction
In this project I believe the outcome will be that light energy is essential for photosynthesis to occur. The aim was to show that light is necessary for photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process of converting light energy into chemical potential energy and storing it as starch. This process occurs in plants and some algae. Photosynthetic Efficiency
The production of sugars happens when energy from captured light is used in particular pathways. Scientists know these pathways and can therefore work out how efficient photosynthesis is in producing sugars. Scientists know that for a leaf to process two molecules of NADP+ into two molecules of NADPH, which in turn will create one hexose molecule, it must absorbs 8 photons of light.
Complicated mathematical equations show that photosynthesis is, on average, 30% efficient at reducing carbon dioxide to hexose. Photosynthesis has been measured at 25% efficiency in laboratory conditions. The plant measured to be the most efficient at photosynthesis in natural conditions (8%) was the winter-evening primrose and sugarcane has shown 7% efficiency. Farming food crops photosynthesis at a rate of between 1 and 4%, as does algae.
This information was taken off a physics website and didn’t help me during my experiment. I had already found out a lot about photosynthesis and how light affect it which was the point of this investigation. What this information did do was reassure me that photosynthesis is an efficient process. The growth and survival of a plant depends on the reactions that occur internally called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a reaction that captures the sun’s energy and converts it, water, and carbon dioxide into glucose, with a byproduct of oxygen. Glucose is a sugar that provides energy to allow for a plant to grow and live. This experiment is to test how photosynthesis can be sped up with a home solution. The variable being changed in this experiment is the solution that the plant is being given. In this instance, some of the plants will be given Gatorade, rather than water. The question being asked is, How well will a solution found in the home affect plant growth?
Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy to chemical energy into sugars. It is the process in plants that uses carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight from its surroundings and releases oxygen as a byproduct (6H2O+6CO2+light energy -> C6H12O6+6O2). Photosynthesis is required for plants because they are autotrophs, organisms that make their own food. Plants require a specific environment that is ideal to them to be able to carry out the process. Environmental conditions can either increase or decrease the rate of photosynthesis. Things like colors of light, pH, and temperature can all affect the rate of photosynthesis in plants.
The effects of light intensity and light wavelength on photosynthesis was observed in two different experiments and closer study of different pigments in spinach was observed. For the experiment where the effects of light was observed, it was found that a light intensity of 30 cm, wavelengths of blue and red lights show the greatest photosynthetic activity. The different pigments present is spinach were also observed and it was noted that though chlorophyll is the most abundant in plants, there are other pigments present as well.

When using algae beads and a CO2 indicator, the process of Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration can be measured. In this experiment the intensity of light will be altered in each trail, and the rate of Photosynthesis will then be measured. As you rise from low light intensity to higher light intensity, the rate of photosynthesis will increase because there is more light available to drive the reactions of photosynthesis. However, once the light intensity gets high enough, the rate won’t increase anymore since there will be more-light than water and CO2; there will not be enough components from light, water, and CO2 to create the process of Photosynthesis. As CO2 dissolves and the amount of CO2 goes up, the pH will lower, which means the solutions color will change varying form red, orange and yellow, all pending on what the pH is at. CO2 will be produced from respiration, all while photosynthesis absorbs the CO2.
