Gun Control The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people, or about 270,000,000 guns, which is the highest total and per capita number across the globe. The current public gun control debate in the United States seems to be placed on standby until it is sparked up by a major mass shooting. There were at least 126 mass shootings between January 2000 and July 2014.(pro). Opponents of more gun laws accuse supporters of using a horrific event to further a lost cause, saying that more laws would not have prevented the shootings. Advocates of more gun control often want more laws to try to prevent the mass shootings and call for smart gun laws and background checks . Pew Research Center did

Too many people have lost their lives due to careless accidents and violent acts of crime that could have possibly both been avoided with more control. According to a Lancet study implementing federal universal background checks could reduce firearm deaths by a projected 56.9%; background checks for ammunition purchases could reduce deaths by a projected 80.7%; and gun identification requirements could reduce deaths by a projected 82.5%.(pro) Research shows that more gun control law being implemented could saves thousands of lives each and every year. Furthermore, high-capacity magazines were used in at least 50% of the 62 mass shootings between 1982 and 2012. When high-capacity magazines were used in mass shootings, the death rate rose 63% and the injury rate rose 156%. (Pro) It is very clear that high-capacity magazines are unnecessary and directly lead to an increase in death and injury rates. Controlling the capacity of magazines will make it harder for criminals to carry out large mass murders due to the number of rounds in which they can fire. Large magazines give murderers the opportunity to become mass murderers simply by giving them more rounds to fire at their victims. More gun control laws could greatly reduce deaths by guns; making it harder for deadly criminals to get guns. Additionally, a band on high-capacity magazines would reduce the number of victims even if criminals were to get their hands on guns
The people who advocate in favor of gun control have several arguments to support their idea. They defend that gun control would help to reduce the number of mass shootings in the United States and the crimes that are related to firearms. Oldham highlighted that the United States had 372 mass shooting, where 475 were killed and 1870 were injured in
Gun control should not exist at all in the United States. Mass shootings have almost become seen as normal event in the United States. What people do not understand is that gun control is not the answer; there are countries with little to no control that have fewer shootings. According to The Washington Post,Finland is ranked number 4 in countries with the most guns despite that they only had 24 homicides by firearm (“Gun homicides and ownership by countries” n.pag.) . In the article Did Gun Control Work In Australia “it is shown that gun control has reduced the problems but it still has not completely got rid of all firearm deaths”(Matthews n.pag.). The number of murders, homicides, or suicides do not go up due to people just owning more guns. Clayton Perry, a staff writer at the University of Maine, even points out “Stricter gun laws were in place during the Assault Weapons Ban between 1994 and 2004, but that didn't stop the shooters at Columbine in 1999 ”(Perry n. pag.). In Iceland, thirty out of a hundred people own a gun and they have zero homicides caused by guns a year(“Gun Homicides and ownership by country” n. pag.). In this day and age, everything is unpredictable, guns are a form of protection for everyone and there should not be restrictions on protection. The U.S. Department of Justice released a data brief that states, “ On average in 1987-92 about 83,000 crime victims per year used a firearm to defend themselves or their property”(Rand BJS Statistician n. pag.). The National Sheriffs Association released that the average police response time is at eighteen minutes while the average school shooting only last twelve minutes (“Embracing Technology To Decrease Response Time” n. pag.). Gun control should not exist because other countries do fine without it , high gun ownership has no link with increasing death rates , and guns are not harmful when instructions are followed.
There are currently over 200 million guns in use, which means obtaining a gun in the United States mustn't be that hard. If gun usage could be regulated more by banning certain unneeded weapons to the public and requiring a more in depth background check, than miss usage of guns, and deaths caused by them would decrease. However, already existing laws need to be enforced and harsher penalties for those who don't follow the laws. If the country would agree on certain legislation for gun control, than The United States could be a much safer
Gun issue is not only a big problem from United States, it’s also a big problem around the world. With more and more people buying guns, gun violence increases everywhere. “ Guns are more lethal than more other method, people try” he adds “ Americans own an estimated 300 million guns” (nytimes.com). As gun ownership increases, the arguments about gun control can be easily found online in America. “Over the past 25 years, Americans’ support for stricter gun control laws has been generally declining even as the number of mass shootings is on the rise. While some high-profile shootings have resulted in calls for increased restrictions, that support has proved fleeting thus far. Gun control is one of the most sharply divisive issues in the U.S. today”(Perez-Pena). America does not have strong gun control law, which cause many criminals to possess guns and commit crimes. “ The vast majority of guns used in 15 recent mass shootings including at least two of the guns used in the San Bernardino attack, were bought legally and with a federal background
Opponents of stronger gun laws say that guns are not the cause of mass shootings because on November 26, 2013 a study found that banning assault weapons did not significantly affect murder rates(http://gun-control.procon.org/). This may be true, however guns are the cause of too many mass shootings and should not be allowed. High capacity mags should be banned because between 1982 and 2012 50% of 62 mass shootings used high capacity mags to fire at innocent people. Also stronger gun control will protect children and families from armed assailants (http://gun-control.procon.org).Plus parents are demanding action after the sandy hook shooting in which 20 children from the age 6-7 were shot(http://www.newsmax.com/Fast Features). This is a real problem in the us because of firearms many people are killed everyday by people with guns.
Some say that more gun control laws would reduce gun deaths. The website, procon.org, Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted, February 26, 2016, says, “There were 464,033 total gun deaths between 1999 and 2013” (p 6). Of these deaths, 58.2% were suicide, 37.7% were homicides, and 2.2% were unintentional. Guns are the leading cause of death by homicide with 66.6% and by suicide with 52.2%, and are the 12th leading cause of all deaths. The study published by American Journal of Public Health found that "legal purchase of a handgun appears to be associated with a long-lasting increased risk of violent death" (p 6). Guns are related to a lot of deaths, and are among the top weapons associated with all deaths. Also, just legally owning one increases a person’s risk of dying
The United States is known for many things. We’re number one in Moon landings, number one in diversity, and number one in guns per 100 people. As a left-wing Democrat, I find this very concerning and dangerous, but many others feel differently about the topic of gun control, and more specifically, background checks. Most opposition to extensive background checks are Republicans, and this can be seen portrayed in traditional Republican values like safety, security, and family. Through the opposition of explicit restrictions to our Second Amendment right, gun control opposition enacts values like patriotism and nationalism with strong traditional American beliefs.
For several years, gun violence has been an urgent issue that should be addressed. According to the gun violence archive, 307 mass shootings have occurred since January 1 to November 5. The deadliest mass shooting in us history had just recently occurred on Sunday, October 1. Steve paddock had purchased their guns legally in which caused approximately 500 people to be injured and 38 people had been killed. The congress is constantly being urged by people to impose strict gun laws for America. Gun control laws are a good thing because they set restrictions on the use of guns for citizens. America has around 270,000,000 guns in total, which is the highest number in the world. The American gun laws need reform. Imposing restrictions will
Gun control is the restrictions or banning of firearms. Gun control refers to laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms. In my opinion there will always be a debate about it. If I had to choose a side on this gun control debate, it would certainly be against gun control.
First I think Molly Ivins is wrong when she say get rid of guns. What she don’t realize there will still be violence in the united states of America gun are not the problem the people that own the gun is the problem. Secondly some people buy gun to fell safe just think about a woman that has three kids and she live on her on what should she go out and buy the protect her family and make sure that they are safe. Third people love gun because guns make people think twice about breaking into there house are bothering the person who own a gun When she say get a knife, Get a Dog, But get rid of guns. Fourth at the same time she should do more research because dog kill people and knife kill people to so I don’t get where she is try to go with that. I just think gun are not the biggest issues violence is the biggest issues because if you take gun always people will still find something to replace the gun.
The truth is, violent crimes in America are often very high, but in reality property crimes happen more. In the nine year olds case, the gun wasn’t properly put away, causing the tragic incident. Personally, I think if an individual has taken appropriate courses for owning a gun, have had a background check, and seem stable then it is fine for them to own a gun. Guns should be used for protection, hunting for food during the appropriate season, and used at a gun range where safe objects are the target. I have many friends who responsibly own guns and only use them when appropriate. However, if someone has purposefully committed a gun crime before, they shouldn’t be allowed a gun. This may seem unfair to some people but its only for America’s safety. Also, a person should be at least 21 to own a gun. If a person shooting a gun at a gun range is underage, they need to be accompanied by an adult with a license to carry.
Gun control is something that the country is strongly divided on. The some on the right wing wants so few restrictions they can go to Walmart and buy an AK-47. At the same time certain members on the left wing want to take away anything bigger than an airsoft gun. There is a fine line between the two, but that is where the country needs to be. Like a clown on a unicycle, edging across a tight rope, this country needs to find balance between the two. That being said, at this point the country needs more gun control. There is a shooting about once a week, like clockwork. Senseless deaths every year from accidental misfires. It is time for a change. There are some who believe gun control is a step back for the United States, but in reality it assists in saving lives, truly follows the second amendment, helps lower the crime rate and suicide rate.
Coming from where I was raised my whole life, as an young African American my two eyes have witnessed many altercations involving a gun. In this country we have homeless people that’s struggling in poverty. They can 't find work, increasing inflation rates, an unstable budget, and more importantly, a problem with guns.
Gun control laws will help to reduce the number of mass murders in the United States. In 1993, about 39,995 people were killed from guns. (Kleck, 1) Nearly half of these deaths, 48 percent were suicides, 47 percent were homicides, 4 percent were fatal gun accidents, and 1 percent were due to legal intervention. (Kleck, 1)
One reason we need better gun control laws is because , more guns equal more homicides & suicides . For example, there are about 123 suicides per day . This is caused by depression, anger, stress and many more reasons . Better gun control laws can help reduce the rate of suicides . Furthermore , massive shootings . There is no month that goes by without a massive shooting . Wether its school shooting, public shooting, or any, innocent people are losing their lives . As you can see, our world needs better gun control
