Every person in life faces a number obstacle that he/she either conquers or the obstacles conquer that person. In the two essays, “Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass and “The Library Card” by Richard Wright, the two authors face many obstacles in their lives. Frederick Douglass is a slave who has a desire to gain knowledge regardless of the circumstances and obstacles. Richard Wright is an African American man who lives in the South during the Jim Crow Laws and also has a yearning to attain more information about the life he lives. A previous EOF student, Rakiyah Johnson’s reaction to the essays written by Frederick Douglass and Richard Wright is that Douglass suffered far worse difficulties than Wright did. On the contrary, there are facts, which proves that the two men, Douglass and Wright suffered equal obstacles throughout their quest to gain knowledge. The obstacles consist of society’s restriction of knowledge to African Americans; the idea of Frederick Douglass and Richard Wright became ostracized; and the gained knowledge left the two authors with awareness, which brought distress in their lives.

Being an individual and standing up is one thing but a group is another. The antisemitism that happened was so bad during the Holocaust. It was hard to change people's mind and actually change things. A group can make a video, all do or not do something, and even start a protest. In today’s society, our focus on the problem solvers of the nation has deviated to only the problems in need of solutions. People of our generation now treat innovative thinking with contempt, and instead of drafting resolutions to issues, they grouse about all that is amiss. They perpetuate negativity during the tumultuous events we face and renounce those who speak out against them. But truthfully, those who speak out, those who rise up, those who refuse to succumb to this notion that nothing we can do affects where we end up - they are the real heroes. These individuals strive for change, without knowledge of personal gain or reward, regardless of who respects them in society.

As a whole were limited as of what we can do to give back to our community. With every bit of help we can have a significant impact on the rate of poverty in America. There are many ways to get citizens off the streets and into stable homes. Working with a variety of organizations can have a major impact on children, adults and veterans on rebuilding their lives over again.

As a leader, I feel that working in a group or team is a must to see progress within the company. In order to see progress within the company, working together as a team is very important.
