As someone who has suffered from concussions myself and also as someone who has seen the negative impacts of these types of injuries, I believe it is in our best interest to further research several aspects of such a severe injury. Similar to my belief, the mission of the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) is to commission research in sports medicine, science and where feasible, establish standards for athletic equipment. Accordingly, the intent of the NOCSAE grant program is to commission investigator-initiated research and to provide support for education, health, and safety research and development. Problem
In the United States it is estimated that there are about 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries per year. Despite this high number there also thousands of other head injuries that go unreported. Of all those people the age groups that are most likely to suffer from such injury are from 0 to 4 and from 15 to 19, the second group being High School students. Of these traumatic brain injuries the most common is a concussion. According to research the problem with these injuries is that if someone has already received one concussion, they are 1-2 times more likely to receive a second one. If they 've had two concussions, then a third is 2-4 times more likely, and if they 've had three concussions, then they are 3-9 times more likely to receive their fourth concussion. All these concussions sustained by one person can result in further problems and even death.
Furthering my focus, the sport that has the highest concussion rate is football. Football is the most popular and fastest growing sport in America. Football is a contact sport and the head of almost all players participating is directly contacted on every play that occurs. With a growth in popularity, kids all over America are being exposed to football at younger and younger ages. Today’s rates, concussions are occurring more and continuing to grow in young athletes. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports show that the amount of reported concussions have doubled in the last 10 years. The American of Pediatrics have reported that “emergency room visits for concussions in children ages 8 to 13 years old have doubled and concussions have risen 200% among teens ages 14 to 19 in the last decade.” Football has the highest rates of concussions out of all the sports in young athletes, which is 47% out of all reported sport concussions, with 33% of concussions occurring during practice. The sports with descending concussion rates include: ice hockey, girls’ soccer, both boys and girls lacrosse, and boy soccer. 1 in 5 high school athletes will sustain from a sports related concussion during the season. 33% of high school athletes report two or more concussions within the same year. Just from a first hit, this can result in permanent damage and have long term effects, but the second or third hit is what really needs to be watched. A recent study of college football players has shown that those who participate in high contact sports and have had a concussion before have a 300% higher chance of having another one in comparison to athletes that have never had a concussion before (Jolicoeur et al, 2007). The NFL and NCAA have enacted several rule changes in order to minimize the occurrence of concussions. These new rules, like many before them, have come under the scrutiny of the very athletes that they were meant to protect. The NHL and NHL Players Association in 1997 together created a program in order to get a better understanding of concussions and how to prevent them (Burke et al, 2011). According to Covassin (2008), athletes who have had more than one concussion take a longer time to recover with each concussion that they suffer from.

It has also been found that 78% of concussions happen during games as opposed to during practices (Science Daily, 2014).
There has been extraordinary improvements of helmets from the old leather to the modernized-plastic football helmets along with the face mask and energy- absorbent padding. In addition, the concern over preventing concussions, have led to helmet changes, impact testing methods and reconstruction of injuries during play helping to provide insight on concussions(4). Helmets have been successful in decreasing the risk of traumatic brain injuries, but there is much concern over concussion; therefore, scholars argue the importance of technology development to address concussion(5). As the author(s), David Viano and David Halstead discusses, there is room needed for understanding the types of collisions associated in youths and the impact condition addressing collisions. There are many variables to consider addressing concussion and where they occur.
