The first Crusade was an event that happened between the times of 1096-1099 and played a very important part in Medieval England. The reason that the First Crusade happened was because they were trying to capture Jerusalem from the Muslims. They didn’t want the Muslims to have Jerusalem because it belonged to the Christians. The First Crusade was a major event that happened and it still talked about today. Jerusalem was captured by the Muslims, Christians were mad about this when they found out. Many people also volunteered to fight on the First Crusade.

The beginning of this Crusade was marked by the capture of Jerusalem by Saladin. He was a proponent leader that led with his hatred of people that were considered unbelievers, but he also had kindness and some would even say compassion towards some people. He was born in 1138 and died in 1193 at the age of 55. After Saladin had captured The Holy Land in 1187 the Christians once again made it their mission to recapture it. The first crusade consisted of 10’s of thousands of European Christians on a medieval military expedition to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims. This doesn’t mean that the first crusade was just motivated by religion. Throughout this essay, I will be suggesting the main reasons of why people went on crusades and which different people went for specific reasons and why.

The Crusaders, people who had fought in the Crusades, were Christians. They wanted the holy land because they believe that’s where Jesus had died and rose. Some may wonder, were the results of the Crusades more Positive or Negative? The Crusaders took over many of the cities on the Mediterranean coast and built a large number of fortified castles across the Holy Land to protect their newly established territories. Jesus came to instruct the mere mortal to “…cleanse the Holy Places of Jerusalem and restore the service of the saints” (Tyerman 33). For these Holy Places held the presence of another faith; the Jews, or as the Christians would refer to them, the murderers of he who was nailed to the cross.
