Introduction
Conflict or disagreement over the range of issues has become inherent aspect of modern organisational life. People from different cultural and education background work in an organisation. People working in an organisation may possess different goal and interest. People working in organisation may tend to different over a range of issues including organisational politics, organisational procedure, personal preference or political preference. Five major styles of managing the conflict have been described below;
a) Integrating; this style of conflict management is concerned with identification of joint problem, confrontation of attitude and proposing the possible solution for the conflict. This style of conflict management is more effective for solving complex issues. Additionally, this style of conflict management tends to be more effective in long run. However, this style of conflict management may not be effective in managing the conflicts that surface out of differing values of employees.
b) Obliging; this style of conflict management focuses upon reducing the difference by addressing the common interest of employees. This style of conflict resolution can prove extremely beneficial for the organisation because it seeks to promote cooperation among the employees. However, this style of conflict management is neither effective in solving the real cause of problem nor suitable for escalating the problems.
c) Dominating; this style of conflict management is more suitable for resolving the conflicts involving personal interest. Managers often obey dominating style in order to force employees to obey. Often management want to implement unpopular working solution. Sometimes management may be concerned of achieving desired outcome within a tight deadline. Whether you work for a manufacturing facility or the health care system, conflict is unavoidable. As a manager, you must learn to deal with conflict in the workplace. In this paper I will describe the different styles of conflict management. I will also discuss my preferred conflict management style with examples of its use. Lastly, I will describe a situation at work and how a conflict management strategy could have improved that situation.
By understanding the types of conflict resolution styles, managers can use appropriate conflict resolution styles to promote and generate healthy conflicts, increase productivity of all team members, increase employee morale and increase overall customer service.
In a dispute, it's often easier to describe how others respond then to how we respond. Each of us has a predominant conflict style that we use to meet our own needs. By examining conflict styles and the consequences of those behaviors, we can gain a better understanding of the impact that our personal conflict style has on other people. With a better understanding, you then can make a conscious choice on how to respond to others in a conflict situation to help reduce work conflict and stress.
There are different conflict management styles, the dictatorial style, which insists that things are addressed their way and the low self -esteem style, which just allows others to have it their way. It is up to the individual to decide which way works for them. Additionally, the abdicator handles conflict by bowing out or walking away. This method is unhealthy because it robs the offended growth opportunity, which results from working through issues (Pegues, 2009, p.49). Another style is the collaborator, which often involves cooperation and pulling together to reach a common purpose and are emotionally balanced.
Conflict is part of our human disposition; consequently, it is customary within organizations. “Left unanalyzed and unchecked, it can be a destructive force that consumes time, money and human resources. As the expression of employees' dissatisfaction and differences with employers, conflict is regarded as bad and irrational for the organization and should be kept down through some forcible ways. Conflict can arise from employees' misunderstanding of the direction of the organisation or the poor communication between the staff and the management, enabling employees to substitute alternative agendas instead of the organisation's agenda (Bray, Deery, Walsh and Waring, 2005). Moreover, conflicts can arise from the poor management that caused by the management's failure to identify and meet employees' basic needs.
An accommodating manager is also known as a “smoothing” or “obliging” manager (Hemmer, 2003). Accommodating is allowing the desires of the other party to prevail. This resolution reflects low assertiveness and high cooperativeness. Accommodating may be an appropriate conflict-handling strategy when a manager wants to show reasoning, develop performance, create good will, and to keep peace.
This paper will explain and critique conflict management style. It will describe at least three conflict management styles, which conflict management style do I personally use most frequently and why I do. It will also describe the difficulties I have dealt with others who use different conflict management styles then me. Conflict management involves acquiring skills related to conflict resolution, self awareness about conflict modes, conflict communication skills, and establishing a structure for management of conflict ( “Understading”, n.d.). According to K. Thomas (1992) there are five conflict-handling modes : competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, and accommodating. They are classified based on assertiveness and cooperativeness (Thomas, K., 1992). After taking the Conflict Handling Assessment, my preferred conflict-handling mode is compromising which has a moderate assertiveness and moderate cooperation. I want to find a middle ground for the group to agree of the strategies and formulas that are suggested, negotiate to the members of the team to find solution to the problem so that both parties can agree . The value of engaging in conflict with others are important. Understanding conflict and how to handle it will give us choices on how and when to engage in conflict. We learn from our experiences be it personal or professional on how to handle conflict it can either be positive that we can worked with or negative that we avoided and ignored
